Grande rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by shelby_anne
I worked 1 hour of my shift this morning before my manager took me to the back to talk about me taking cat pay. When I told her I wanted to take the 30 days she basically tried to guilt me into staying and made me feel really bad about taking it. And she basically gave off the vibe that if I chose to not come back to work after the 30 days then I would lose my job. All in all, I took the 30 days of cat pay even though my manager tried to guilt me into staying and making me feel bad for taking a benefit the company is offering. Just really looking for support and if anyone has had a similar experience.

Tbh I’d be petty and report her. It legit goes against what the sirens trying to provide.
CrystalWitchBitch 9 points 3y ago
Ok wtf you will not lose your job that’s so ducked like this is a resource available to all partners in the us and Canada and are allowed to make this decision without any repercussions and nobody is gonna lose their job
shelby_anne [OP] 5 points 3y ago
Yeah, I honestly don’t even know why she would mention that my job would be in jeopardy if I didn’t return after the 30 days.
CrystalWitchBitch 7 points 3y ago
I think managers are just trying to get baristas on board to work as it looks like there aren’t enough
shelby_anne [OP] 7 points 3y ago
Yeah, and I get that. She told me half of our staff is out but I told her that I need to take care of myself, which is more important than working for $12 an hour (or $15 rn). It just made me feel really shitty
CrystalWitchBitch 6 points 3y ago
I’m sorry you don’t deserve to feel that way and ultimately it’s your decision not hers be safe out there
maddyevans 7 points 3y ago
Call Ethics! They will launch an investigation on your manager.
shelby_anne [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Just scared I would lose my job if I did that
maddyevans 2 points 3y ago
That would be retaliation which Starbucks is highly against in their partner hand out book
JCaligirl420 5 points 3y ago
You need to report this manager. They are offering it for a reason.
lilBalzac 3 points 3y ago
You are right. She is being unfair, knowingly or not. Do not allow guilt to haunt you here. Be well.
windowsofthislove 3 points 3y ago
Sounds like my old manager eeeee
shelby_anne [OP] 3 points 3y ago
It’s just making me feel like I made the wrong decision, even though 15 out of our 30 or so employees are out at the moment.

Listen to your gut

Unless you’re actually sick, or you have genuine reason to suspect you WILL get sick then I agree with your manager.

This is crunch time and it shows who you are as a worker to everyone. Your store, not even the company itself just your store, is going to need all hands on deck to help with the stuff that’s going to happen for the next few weeks. The people who just want to have 30 days paid leave for free, like you, are making it harder and harder on the baristas you leave behind. Your friends and coworkers are the ones being truly affected, not corporate or your manager.

Not only that, but say this goes on a lot longer than you’re expecting. Say your store closes *RIGHT* when you would be going back. You don’t get paid *ANYTHING* while the store is closed. Nothing.

Also, corporate is providing a bonus of some sort to the stores that stay open (because let’s be real, it isn’t as crazy as everyone is making it out to be, it’s a cough, not the Black Death).

Sorry, but unless you are actually sick, or you have serious reason to suspect you *WILL* get sick then you’ve just left your team with one less person and that’s kinda stupid.

Edit: As to the whole “not having a job”, she may be putting you under extra scrutiny after this. You never mentioned feeling sick or anything so they probably see it the way I do, that you just want 30 days of pay without doing the work. Expect to come back and have write-ups waiting for any misdeed or mistake.
SirenGreenBean 12 points 3y ago
You have ZERO idea why they want to take it. It’s wrong to guilt someone because they chose to take the 30 days. I *look* fine, but have asthma. So does my kid. My husband has cancer. You wouldn’t know any of this, you just assume it’s cause folks wanna take the “vacation”. 🙄🙄
TheBoisterousBoy -17 points 3y ago
Give reasonings in your argument to defend yourself. Don’t just say “I wanted to take the time, they guilted me” without providing evidence of *WHY* you want to go.

This isn’t r/gamingcirclejerk, we aren’t here to just blindly stroke the ego of everyone. Sorry if me saying “hey, unless you ACTUALLY are sick, you’re in the wrong” with the information provided seems bad, but that’s how it is. You can’t ask for support if you don’t explain your actions.
SirenGreenBean 8 points 3y ago
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 SMs shouldn’t be guilting *anyone* and it’s wrong for her to guilt OP, a “valid” reason or not. If Starbucks wants us to have a “valid” reason to not take the 30 days, they would say so. But as of now, it says if you’re uncomfortable working - you can take it.

Not “if you’re sick”
Not “if you’re caring for an immunocompromised person”
Not “if you’ve got COVID 19”

Just “if you’re uncomfortable working, don’t”.

So... where are you located? Just curious yikes
shelby_anne [OP] 4 points 3y ago
I understand where you’re coming from, but at the same time the company is offering this benefit for anyone who wants to take it, regardless of their personal reasoning for doing so. $3 extra per hour is not really incentivizing me enough to stay. If they didn’t want baristas to use this benefit, then they shouldn’t have offered it. I’m doing what’s best for me, and I shouldn’t be made guilty for wanting to take a benefit that is being offered to me.
TheBoisterousBoy -9 points 3y ago
They’re offering it blindly so that the people who *are* actually affected by it get taken care of.
shelby_anne [OP] 10 points 3y ago
There’s a possibility that I could get affected if I continue to work, so I’m taking care of myself
molde37 7 points 3y ago
I don’t think you understand the point of the paid leave, or are even grasping the concept that *everyone*, healthy or otherwise, should be staying home.
