You're earning $3 an hour (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by cascadebabe
I don't know who needs to hear this but if you get paid normally to stay home and an extra $3 to come in, for your time until April 19th you are being paid $3 an hour.

Let's say there's Molly and morgan. They are baristas who make $10/hr. We are going to look at one hour of their days.

Molly waters her plants and makes breakfast. +$10

Morgan goes into work risking contracting a novel virus. +$13

Morgan earned $3 by coming in today. Morgan is earning $3 an hour. Morgan goes into overtime. After 40 hours of earning $3/hr, Morgan now earns $9.50 per hour for the 3 - 4 hours of overtime she's approved.

Tips stay the same, dear god stop commenting "plus tips" as if that makes a difference here

For me the money is not relevant. The moral choice is to stay home to help limit the spread of this pandemic. The money is a just a bribe to try to get us to not do the moral thing.

Exactly!! Thank you :)

You might be earning an EXTRA $3 an hour, which seems low.... but your also getting a hell of a lot more hours than someone who is taking cat pay. Especially after 2 weeks it’s not scheduled hours, it’s minimum. So a working barista is going to double what someone taking cat pay is making, because of the extra hourly pay and scheduled hours. That’s why I’m taking 2 weeks of cat pay, and then going back to work to make that bread :)

This is very situational. For some people this is a huge difference because of the amount of hours they'll be getting but for a lot of people so many stores closed and all the baristas are back to fighting for hours at the two stores in the state that are still open.

You’re also earning tips, which for some people is a lot of money.

Ok, but so what?

Maybe for some people it’s about more than just the money.

You made your choice, let others make theirs.

I think it’s more so to send a point than anything else. Just to show to the public that Starbucks really is non essential. At least it is for me. I worked a couple days of it and rang up more Frappuccino’s than I would on a usual day. I can understand emergency services but where I’m at people aren’t taking it seriously enough.
-East coast partner.
-Seriously though, for the barista that chooses to stick it out. I appreciate all you do, but if it’s not worth the money, it’s not worth the health of your friends and family either

The fun part about this is that I can post anything to reddit and you can still make your own decision. At first I was going to go back to work because $3 looks really fancy schmancy and then I realized me staying home, and you going to work, the only difference between us is that you get $3 more per hour. You are getting $3 an hour to come in. Everyone has their price but to me it's not worth exposing myself to a virus that we know 0 of the long term effects in humans AND aiding in the spread of it by interacting with many strangers. Do I judge or shame people going to work? Personally, no. Do I think a lot of them would be there if they understood? Also no.

It amazes me how people aren’t understanding this

Heart rate like 📈 brain cell count like 📉
tseriesisdone -4 points 3y ago
I make 13.02 normally. Now I will make 16.02. Not just $3 lmao. I wouldn’t go in otherwise.
CuriousPersonGuy 8 points 3y ago
You’d get 13.02 for not working too. Meaning you’re really working just for 3 bucks lol.
tseriesisdone 1 points 3y ago
I also get paid for my shifts I was scheduled originally for. So I think I’ll take my chances. I need the mo eh.
cascadebabe [OP] 1 points 3y ago
If you are working, you won't be paid for the scheduled shifts. That's cat pay, which you're foregoing. That's absolutely your choice, my post is meant to let people know that by exposing yourself to the virus you're only earning $3/hr because that's the only difference between your paycheck and mine (someone who stays home) so by leaving your house, you're only doing so for $3. I'm not trying to say if you work 6hrs you'll only get $18 on your paystub.
tseriesisdone 1 points 3y ago
He said I’ll be paid my regular rate for my scheduled shifts and 16.02 for my new shifts until things go back to normal.
tseriesisdone 1 points 3y ago
This is not what I was told. My manager made it clear I will be paid for my scheduled shifts and my shifts I worked. So I’m going to go with what he’d said vs someone on the internet.

And tips
mierecat -3 points 3y ago
What is this math?? If you come to work you make $3 extra an hour. I don’t understand how you think the fact that you could not work nullifies the original rate.

But partners staying home are making the same amount of money for not working. Once you subtract that base pay that everyone is getting it's $3 an hour for coming in.
mierecat 2 points 3y ago
The fact that you can make the same amount of money doing something different does not negate that base amount of money. If a barista makes $10 an hour and a shift makes $13 an hour you don’t look at the shift and say “you’re only making $3 an hour.” That’s not how this works at all
CampLeo 3 points 3y ago
We do this kind of math normally. If you were, hypothetically, offered a promotion from barista to shift. The way you would decide that in your example is, "Is $3 an hour worth the extra work involved?" That's the question that people need to be asking. Is $3 an hour worth the extra work? It's just that the "extra" is all of the work. And it's worth it for some people. If you can make sure that you're going to get more hours and you NEED the little extra money that's totally understandable. I'm not in the camp saying that people are stupid or selfish or whatever for working. I'm just letting you know where this number folks are using is coming from.

$3 extra per hour plus tips
paolathepanda -2 points 3y ago
"As a thank you, hourly partners (baristas, shift supervisors and shift managers) will temporarily receive an additional $3 per hour worked effective on the hours worked starting Saturday, March 21 through Sunday, April 19"

stated in the most recent update from partner hub. So it's not 3$ per hour its 3$ EXTRA per hour .
CampLeo 2 points 3y ago
When you stay home you're already making the base pay. You have to subtract that from the total.
coffeeslinger2000 1 points 3y ago
If you’re working you’re getting tips
