So many of us baristas took the 30 day off that they had to close our location.

It shocked me how many at my store didn’t take it. I took it at the first chance, but other than me and 3 other baristas, the team is still fully stocked. Blows my mind that people want to work through this.

In my area... the incentive for working was an extra $3 per hour. My manager made calls to everyone in our store to let them know that. It made some people change their minds.. an extra $3 might be worth it.

It could be...but if you think about it this way maybe not. Let’s take Chris and Sally. They both work 20 hours a week at 10 bucks an hour. Chris decided to take his cat pay and stays home, working on schoolwork and a new skill. Sally decided to work through the 4/20 deadline taking the $3 “pay raise”. When they get their checks Chris made $400 sitting at home enjoying a couple new movies. And Sally made $520. So Sally possibly infected the rest of her family for around $120. That doesn’t cover medical bills, and that certainly isn’t worth my life. But to each his own. Just know, they’re basically paying you $3 an hour to work during a global pandemic.

That’s exactly how I saw it. I tried to explain this to come coworkers but a lot of them didn’t see it that way. Also, in my district, we have 10 stores and only 4 are staying open (with reduced hours, too). So if there’s 50% of baristas that want to stay from each store, there’s no way they’re working even close to their normal hours, plus there’s a commute they won’t get mileage for.

I was forced to take my 30 days, my whole district is closed.

To the person who commented below me. Not everyone has the privilege of not having to work. Some of us have kids, some of us have bills and rent that aren’t going to wait until this is over, although it may seem shocking to YOU, it’s a reality for most of US. I get that Starbucks may have nice incentives for not working, it’s just not enough. Especially considering there’s a three dollar raise for working.

I totally get that! I am just fortunate enough to get hired in after seasonal at Costco so I am still working there. Not enough hours to make any bring home money after paying for benefits for my family at Starbucks. Now I just work part time Sbux. Costco just announced an extra $2 hr.

Starbucks should have just closed for a month. No one, absolutely NO. ONE. needs coffee that bad. It is in no way essential. And I'm saying that as one of the worst caffeine addicts you'll ever meet. Starbees you were SO close with offering 30 days. It should have been an auto 30 days with pay.

Yeah I took my 30 days

Years ago, when a customer would joke (in a friendly way) about the price of a drink, I would proudly tell them we were 3rd on Forbes list of socially responsible corporations & about a few of the great things globally & in the US, we did to earn that title. I don’t know where we’ve stood more recently on this list, or if it still exists- but in my mind we are plummeting into the negative numbers right now.

You have stated exactly what I believe— that we DO have a social & public health responsibility to do exactly as you’ve stated, (close our stores for 30 days, send the RIGHT message) to BREAK THE CHAIN, FLATTEN THE CURVE, & SAVE LIVES.

Thank you for putting it so succinctly.

I’m taking the 30 days. I’m surprised many of my partners don’t want to take it.

I didn’t take it because I actually enjoy working.

I also really enjoy working but I also enjoy not being sick or spreading illnesses, and if I'm not sick, I enjoy encouraging others to stay home instead of getting coffee

Costco is my fulltime job and I didnt want to risk my fellow baristas by bringing Covid 19 in with me. Glad I had the option to take off.
