Times are stressful and hard on us all. But would it kill y’all to be just a little nicer to the partners that are choosing to continue working? Damn... (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kait_lynb
Not all of you are negative, but I keep encountering the negativity in the comments of other posts and my own.. like we’re just trying to make it through this crap like the rest of y’all...
b2m0k 62 points 3y ago
For the baristas who are working right now, I hope your tips are awesome. $💚$💚$
sunshine455 61 points 3y ago
It's not. People are choosing to pay for the car in the back instead 🙃🙃
lordyuhloo 39 points 3y ago
Uggggghhh right????
Like come on.

We did have a few people who were like "oh, my drink got paid for? Just throw all this cash in your tip jar."

Bless them.
sunshine455 13 points 3y ago
Those are rare gems! I did have a guy tip me $10 at 530am last Sunday before the lobbies closed. He absolutely made my day
lordyuhloo 3 points 3y ago
Oh yeah, Christmas eve, a man tipped us $100.
Made the whole crew's night.
izziedays 9 points 3y ago
I got $78 in a week
b2m0k 6 points 3y ago
Awesome!!!!! 💚💚💚
izziedays 7 points 3y ago
I was genuinely shocked bc I’ve never gotten more than like $10 😭
HighImStan 2 points 3y ago
Our tip jar got robbed at the pick up table when we weren’t looking today!
b2m0k 2 points 3y ago
I hope their special place in hell has scalding hot coffee enemas
Tiabenieweenie 48 points 3y ago
“I mobile ordered 30 minutes ago and my drink better not be watery. Can you remake it?” - person who mobile ordered in line 5 minutes ago.
espressnooo 6 points 3y ago
I think you missed the point here
JAWSthemeSWIMIN 3 points 3y ago
Honestly, we had the same problem here in Houston. Now we put all mobile orders to the side and make them as they come through our drive thru line. No mo wasted time/product and customers are still happy :)
Velvet3535 1 points 3y ago
Very common complaint
Izuhbelluh 30 points 3y ago
Or those of us that work inside grocery stores/target too :( I'd love 30 days paid off but the best we're getting is $2 more an hour for 2 weeks :|
kanyon01 8 points 3y ago
Don’t work at a grocery store Starbucks for your own sake. Franchise Starbucks suck. You get waaay more benefits working at a corporate store and in my opinion deal with less assholes. Don’t bust your back for a location that doesn’t care about you. Just my opinion though.
Walagemini94 5 points 3y ago
Real question tho. I work at a grocery store SBX and also wonder what benefits corporate store baristas get....
kanyon01 8 points 3y ago
Tuition reimbursement for ASU online for up to a bachelors degree (essentially a free degree minus book costs), free Spotify premium, free subscription to Headspace, 401k, stock in company which you can cash in for actual moneys, decent health insurance, free pound of coffee a week and obviously free drinks. Free food markout every shift. 30% discount off anything at any other corporate store. And now the 30 days paid time off during this whole pandemic. It’s worth it to work at corporate locations, I swear. Although I’m not sure which benefits (if any) you guys receive. I just know that some of my coworkers used to work franchise and hated it, said it’s not worth it.
latent_spring 5 points 3y ago
it isn’t worth it, I started in a TarBucks.

some other stuff: sick time, vacay accrues after a year, 401k match up to 5% of your paycheck, adoption assistance, fertility assistance, continuous coffee learning now available, tips, 40% off partner shopping days for the holidays, and so many absolute weirdos I never would have gotten to meet and stories I’d never get to tell without this place.

over at the roastery, my team tends to say “it’s the only place I want to hate being at every day”, lol
BaristaBabeSC 4 points 3y ago
Shit, all of the benefits
Izuhbelluh 1 points 3y ago
I'm happy to have a job right now, don't get me wrong. I also didn't apply for sbux (I had applied to another position in the store) so they threw me in but started me at a higher pay because of it.
I don't bust my back, it's a low volume kiosk :) I was looking elsewhere at other jobs, thank you though.
Assiqtaq 4 points 3y ago
Are some of us? I'm getting a bonus $150 in about two weeks, and $25 in groceries, but as of yet that is all. And full timers at my grocery store will be getting $300 for their bonus.
Herry_Up 1 points 3y ago
Weird, the tarbucks I frequent closed down. I wonder why yours didn’t? Assuming you work there
Izuhbelluh 1 points 3y ago
I work for a grocery store sbux but the targets I've gone into their sbux has been open.
kanyon01 1 points 3y ago
It varies per location. Some people working at Starbucks are choosing to work through the pandemic.
verapamil12 21 points 3y ago
As a former short term barista turned customer, why do you choose to keep working? No disrespect meant at all. I just know if I had the option of 30 paid days off I would take it. Are you getting an incentive for staying working? However as a hospital employee that is only gonna have to work more, I greatly appreciate those of you that keep working.
Ladysm1th 17 points 3y ago
For me it was a tough choice to continue. You get paid for the average of what you'd normally work. I need at least 30 hours. I usually get scheduled for 27, but during normal working conditions, I'm able to get it to 30 through coming in early, staying late, taking shifts. I wish I could just get scheduled 30, but it doesn't happen. Also, tip money goes directly into paying for internet (I'm an online student even before this virus) and gas. Yes, 30 days of pay without risk sounds great, but I won't be able to afford rent, insurance, and other essential bills solely on 27 hours a week of pay.
Saoirse_Says 7 points 3y ago
That's so fucked up. I fucking hate this.
BaristaBabeSC 3 points 3y ago
Thank you, this is my literal point.
lechatsombre 2 points 3y ago
Apply for the cup fund. It’s available for specifically loss of income due to civil-19 without the usual three year penalty. Even if you choose to keep working you should still apply.
Ladysm1th 2 points 3y ago
Thanks for the info! I've been considering it but I might as well. The worst they can say is no. I guess my initial thought was that I didn't want to rely on the cup fund not coming through, but it's worth a shot
agutema 1 points 3y ago
Just so you know the hours paid are calculated based on your paystub from weeks feb 3 though March 1. Based on what you actually got paid for not we’re scheduled. I can’t post the document for sub rules, but it is in the FAQ document that was posted on Sunday on partnerHub.
Ladysm1th 2 points 3y ago
Oh okay. My DM said it was for hours scheduled this morning. This is such a confusing time
agutema 1 points 3y ago
I get it. There’s lots of stuff floating around. But I recommend reading that faq because it talks about both options and things starbucks is doing other than that also.
lordyuhloo 13 points 3y ago
I was told if I continued to work more I'd get 3$ extra an hour which would bump me up to making roughly 17$ an hour to basically do.... nothing.

Like, serve some customers, clean the store, and lock the doors. In my position, with my immune system and my financial debt, it's worth it for that extra money at this time.
Miss_Mint_Majesty 9 points 3y ago
For me, it’s financial. The 30 paid days is based on what you worked in February - beginning of March...which is when I was on a LOA after surgery. After the first two weeks of the 30 days, I’d get very little. And, I wouldn’t be able to make ends meet. Other than that one month, I’ve been working overtime basically every week
Stellioni 13 points 3y ago
It’s a nonessential job, so it should be closed.
That’s just it.
kait_lynb [OP] 50 points 3y ago
That doesn’t mean we deserve to be disrespected
kanyon01 3 points 3y ago
It kind of sucks because by going out you’re endangering other people. I know maybe you live alone so In that case you won’t get people sick. However if you live with vulnerable family members (which many of the people at my location choosing to work do) then you’re putting them at risk. Since you may be contagious with no symptoms. In that case no amount of money should be worth the risk and it’s entirely irresponsible to continue working. However it is also your choice and I understand (especially after reading some of the above comments) that the 30 days may not be a passable income for some. I just hope you stay safe. Good luck.
[deleted] 1 points 3y ago
Licensed store. We dont get that 30 day pay choice.
kanyon01 3 points 3y ago
That’s so unfair tbh cause you guys work the same job, sometimes more difficult cause of the high traffic area (schools, hospitals, stores). I see the Starbucks at my college and it stresses me out just looking, they are literally never without customers. :(
Tidal_wavves 3 points 3y ago
Also that’s a choice for sbux corporate to make not the individual baristas. You can’t blame us for the stores staying open. Your beef is with corporate not the baristas still working in the stores
[deleted] 1 points 3y ago
I work in a licensed store. Not the store's call to close the store. And if it closes all employees in it end up without any income.

I would really like money to pay the bills and put food on the table. Also the food leftover at the end of the day from the store gets to be taken home and also spread around to other employees of the building and also any homeless we encounter.

Like it fucking sucks but we really have no choice in this state of things

Caffeine_Slinger 6 points 3y ago
Absolutely.

There are innumerable--often agonizing--reasons for people to keep working through this. I get it. Some people aren't safe at home or financially secure if they can't work more than their scheduled shifts.

There are no easy answers. Not going DT-only at the first mention of a pandemic was problematic. Executives should have made the decision to pay partners to self-isolate or continue working in a different capacity (as labor on resets, or deep clean plays and store reorganizations, etc.) with no customer contact. Full stop.

Absent that, clear guidance should have been given to SMs that should, say, 10% of partners decide to take the thirty days to self-isolate, those stores would then close and all remaining partners would be paid to stay at home. Baristas are on the front line; they've got the best feel, via customer connections, for how safe they really are. Again, the option to become labor for something other than customer service should still be available.

Executives are paid to make the tough decisions. Deciding to walk baristas into a meat-grinder isn't a "tough" choice. It's the path of least resistance. Adding an option to leave for thirty days is good gesture, but it's also trying to have it both ways. I mean, I get that too. But Starbucks isn't cash poor, unable to secure loans or favorable legislative relief. Being a better corporate citizen was, and still is, possible.

I don't blame any barista for making whatever choice they made. We're all doing the best we can without crystal balls.

Thank you :’)

I’m working and I love it. Yes it’s crazy nuts but I’m following the safety precautions of the company and I feel confident I’m ok. Is it a chance I take.. yes.. just leaving the house. The virus is very troublesome - a fact no one can refute. I’m working at another store because my store has enough staffing. There are many stores just plain closed including drive through stores.
PLUS the tips are f-ing GREAT
IDrinkRocketFuel 2 points 3y ago
For me it was that id continue working until they closed us down. My ASM said that if they were to close us down in three weeks Starbucks would more than likely give those that kept on working a 30-day paid leave. I currently live in NC and the situation is not that that bad, in comparison to other states. I talked to her more and she mentioned that they had not 100% guaranteed the paid leave if they shut us down. I decided to take my paid leave yesterday. Which only gave me 27 days. Since I can afford to be out of work for a few months (if it came down to it) I decided to take the leave.
mcr0414 2 points 3y ago
My whole store is still working lol
Tidal_wavves 2 points 3y ago
Same lol only like 2 or 3 people took the 30 days 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not everyone has the luxury to strike and “crunch some money” some of us can’t pay our bills or survive on the 30 days of pay. My old store manager was petty and cut my hours from 40 to 20 a week in February, I had to get another job that’s currently closed because of the virus and my only income is from working my regular average hours. If I took the 30 days I’d be making literally half, if not less, of what I’m making by staying in the store
[deleted] 1 points 3y ago

Tidal_wavves 3 points 3y ago
I understand that everyone taking the 30 days as a “strike” sounds like a good idea but A. I don’t think starbucks will see it as a strike and it will accomplish next to nothing. And B. While I understand your frustrations and the fact that you had no choice in the matter I don’t think it’s fair to put that burden on the people who’s stores did stay open. If your store hadn’t closed and forced you to take the time off w/o pay would you be taking the 30 days? Maybe, maybe not. But not everyone’s store closed and it doesn’t seem fair to say “I had no choice so the people who have the choice should choose not to pay their bills as a form of protest”

And I’m not trying to attack you specifically in any way but even on posts unrelated to the time off people are berating and trying to guilt those who are choosing to stay at work and it’s not productive in any way. Again, I don’t think starbucks would care if every partner took the paid time off. They wouldn’t have offered it to everyone in the company if they couldn’t afford it anyways so I don’t see how it could possibly be seen as a form of protest or a strike from their point of view. They offered the time off and a ton of people took it and those stores that didn’t have enough staff closed. But at my store, for example, close to no one took the time off. On top of me paying my bills, I’m staying at the store to help support business needs. I’m a shift supervisor and one of the only ones, other than my SM, available to open. I’m in good health, not high risk or immunocompromised and I have the ability to make sure my manager doesn’t have to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week because I care about her as a person. I have nothing against anyone who chose to take the time off, it was a choice, as is my decision to stay and work until they force close my store.
Hanniblurgh 1 points 3y ago
Shoot, I read that back and no I worded that like garbage you're right. I'm sorry I came off like that. I'm just trying to offer food for thought regarding finding solutions around how to come to an understanding with the company

Nah, you all are killers! I didn't have to make the decision because enough chose and the store closed. I wasn't willing to abandon my team if they were gonna stay. Be safe and make it through this!
