Supposed to have job interview - need advice(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by [deleted]
Hey guys, I hope it’s okay that I post this considering everything going on - I’ve read a lot of your posts about working/taking 30 days off bc of coronavirus and I sympathize w everything you are all going through.
So, Around 3 weeks ago I visited a drive thru Starbucks and thinking it would be a great spot for employment I asked if they were hiring. The manager told me to come back on the 30th for an interview. On google when I looked up the Starbucks it said they were closed everyday but I called the other day and someone actually answered but the manager wasn’t there. I am wondering what I should do bc I’m currently unemployed and I will at the very least desperately need a job when all this is over. However I’m not sure how comfortable a Starbucks would be hiring someone new during this time. Do you guys recommend calling back and asking if I could at least post pone an interview or being hired on if they’re uncomfortable hiring now? Thanks and sorry if this isn’t appropriate for the sub!

Call and ask to speak to the manager. I’m sure they will reschedule your interview

Call again, if the manager still isnt there, ask for the manager’s email! It should be on their business card which is available in the store (obviously not able to go in and get it right now), so they should be able to give that to you. Send them an email asking if you can still take the offer but figure out a plan of action as to how you can go about getting an interview set up down the line once the stores reopen.

My tip for you: Customer Connection.
[deleted] [OP]1 points3y ago
do i bring this up in the interview?
bbfawns1 points3y ago
Don’t bring it up in those words specifically or they will know you’ve done EXTRA research because that’s legal we say a lot here. But make sure to come in ready to give an example of how you have experience connecting with customers and making sure they had a good experience at any previous jobs.. they will probably ask you that . Also if you’re younger than 18 I would try to leave that out if possible. They sort of frown upon hiring younger people, even if they seem ready. But don’t sweat it if you are , there’s a barista or 3 I work with still in HS so

Customer connections is our goal when handing off a beverage or waiting for items in the drive through. It’s as simple as making small talk, complimenting a customers haircut, etc. Be friendly and welcoming to them. Technically not necessary information for the interview but if you’ve heard the phrase before that will probably appear good to that particular manager.

A friend of mine just got hired and our store is currently shut down. She starts training next week. If they need to hire people bad enough they will find a way 👍🏻

ty! i called again and manager was busy taking orders so i have a feeling they're short staffed since they're still running. hopefully that means they will want to hire me since i really need a job - my whole family makes a living in service and they're all unemployed now! also love the idea of being a barista.

I’ve been a barista for the past six years - only the past few months with Starbucks. I was at traditional cafes before, and every place has its perks. Starbucks definitely has the best! You’ll love it. Good luck!

i would call again and speak with the manager. if you really want it, emphasize on teamwork and your positive experiences as a customer and how you can improve that while working. i got hired because of my personality and i’m easily approachable and i’m lucky i got hired because i almost wasn’t due to availability, but that’s not a problem anymore. if you have any questions or wanna talk, just slide me a dm.

tysm!!! im going to keep calling until i get ahold of him bc he's been busy the two times ive called. i will definitely dm you later. i've been applying to starbucks coffees since January w no luck and the people seem super friendly at this location so it would be really nice to work there!

I mean, my location is hiring. I’d definitely call! So many people taking leave means more room in the schedule I’d think.

When I went in for my interview, I had watched tons of videos on youtube with various different bits of advice. A common theme was always "Go in prepared, and as yourself"
By go prepared they mean do research on the company's culture, think of questions they might ask and avoid the "buzzwords" used to draw attention. A suggestion I saw was think of a question or two you can pose to them, base it in ideas you want to further clarify about the company. It shows interest and a willingness to learn.
By be yourself, they mean to go as "you" are. My interview I went in feeling comfortable in a set of nice jeans held up with a belt and a navy button-down short-sleeve shirt, that helped keep the tone a bit more relaxed. I asked questions about customer interactions, and the interview became more like a conversation then a confrontation. He talked about some of his regulars and grounded it in the corporate culture, i returned with instances where I performed customer service that demonstrated the values he expressed.
Got the call a bit later saying i got the job, and now almost 2 years later i'm a barista lead, working on becoming a supervisor.

No problem

Just so you know, I walked into my interview expecting nothing and doing none of that... I’ve been working there since June now! Just be friendly and try to act like you’re ready to see much more of these peoples. Be confident and know that you have the experience it takes bc ... it really isn’t that hard lolol ❤️ hope you get the job:)

Yes! I learned during and after my interview that being a barista isn’t just serving coffee it’s about that customer connection.
