My DM Literally wants to open my cafe store up because “the only reason they don’t want to work is because they are getting paid to not work but if they weren’t getting paid they’d be at work regardless” I was so speechless my DM said this. We are going through a pandemic, some of us have family members that we come home to that are immunocompromised and idk... dealing with fucking cancer so yeah.. I’m going to take the 30 days off cause I’m not going to go to work and have a lazy inconsiderate person come to my cafe, order and expose me. Then I bring it home and potentially get my family member sick. Like I’m so upset at my DM right now!

That’s so horrible that your district manager would say that! They are supposed to be supporting us. I’d be so hurt and angry. I also have a lot of immunocompromised family members and my fiancé has asthma. He’s also already prone to pneumonia. I would rather stay home UNPAID then go to work and possibly bring it home to the ones I love. People are so inconsiderate these days. Like yeah, maybe you’ll be safe from the virus and survive if you get it. But there’s most likely someone in your life that will not survive if they get it! This shit is real and nobody is taking it seriously :( I also wish your family member with cancer a good recovery and I hope they aren’t in too much pain. Stay safe!

Honestly I love my job and I love the company but when my DM said that i was so speechless. But won’t take it to heart because I am just going to stay home for 30 days and be safe! I hope you stay safe and don’t let anyone bring you down for the decision to protect your family in any way possible

thank you so much! I appreciate the support

personally i’ve only read, seen, and experienced the opposite.

partners who take the 30 days are judging those who continue to work.
kanyon01 3 points 3y ago
I’ve personally been judged harshly by my coworkers as have the other partners who took the 30 days. They even made a private group chat to talk everything out and a lot of people were saying stupid things. It bothers me that people are working when they should be practicing social distancing and staying home. However I know that everyone has their own story and I know some people who lost their second job because of COVID. Now they wouldn’t get enough hours from Starbucks for the 30 day average if they didn’t work. I see both sides. I just wish my partners didn’t give me dirty ass looks when I went through drive thru to pick up my tips. Yes I’d much rather be at home safe but I need my money?? Sorry??

I struggle with mental health conditions and live alone with my emotional support animal (feline). I choose to work because I would end up hospitalized from isolation/quarantine. It's not about the money, but about my sanity. When my SM told me about the company thinking about an incentive, I said, "my coming to work is my incentive, I NEED human interaction. If Starbucks wants to give me an incentive that's fine, but I don't mind coming to work."
kanyon01 6 points 3y ago
I also struggle with mental health conditions and I’m not enjoying the quarantine. I get a lot worse when I have to be alone at home. But I think it’s worth it to lock myself up in my room. that’s just my choice though. I understand why you would choose to goto work to keep your sanity and happiness. Or perhaps stability is a better word? I wish you the best. Also cats are superior.

I love my cat, Ash Martin, he knows when I'm not doing well and even saved me from a low blood sugar, it was 31-- human interaction definitely keeps me stable, thank you for understanding. Isolation makes me get inside my head, and I become extremely suicidal, I've lived through that experience last summer. I'm barely able to survive my days off.
kanyon01 2 points 3y ago
I understand that completely. My fiancé helps me a lot with that but lately it has been hard even with another person. Not being able to go out is killing me slowly. But I’m trying my best. Your cat sounds lovely and that’s amazing that he saved your life once! Animals know so much more than we think. We don’t deserve cats they are so precious and they don’t receive enough appreciation. I hope your days off are okay and your work days are great!

i completely understandable this! i need some sort of normalcy and structure in my life at this stressful time because i struggle with anxiety as well. my college has switched to online and i can’t leave my house but going to work gives me at least some sense of reality and relief. i chose not to take the 30 days because someone needs to be there to serve the doctors and first responders who are working long shifts to save and protect us as well. everyone has their own reasons and ideas and no shade to anyone who chose to take the 30 days, i just personally didn’t want to.
bee1983 1 points 3y ago
Exactly, that's why I didn't take it either.

i’m tired of seeing all of the complaints honestly. i’m a barista at a licensed store, and my entire store got laid off earlier this week because of this. i, as well as many of my coworkers, would be thrilled to have the options that starbucks is giving baristas right now
Panik963 6 points 3y ago
I’ve gotten some shit for taking the time also, but idgaf. I close 5 nights a week, our store is DT but our store hours were cut and due to my availability my hours would have been cut. On top of needlessly risking my health and my family’s...it made financial sense for me to take their offer. If you’re that hardcore of a partner...to comment on other’s decisions one way or the other...good for you! I made the choice considering my family and I’s best interest...I assume other partners did the same.
kanyon01 2 points 3y ago
Yeah true. I just wish there was less judgement in the Starbucks world. I know it varies store to store. And I just want everyone to stay safe so we can all try our best to beat this virus as a community and as a whole.
Panik963 1 points 3y ago
I get it! I sure could use my mark out this week but out of fear of dirty looks, I’ll just distance myself lol...
priyasingh25 3 points 3y ago
there’s a double standard yknow. you can’t complain about how partners judge you for taking your catastrophe pay and turn around and judge those who do make the choice to stay and work
the1noir 3 points 3y ago
People stay judging each other; just stay quiet and do you. Everyone is trying so hard to “justify”’their reasons.
aisecherry 1 points 3y ago
I feel pretty lucky with Starbucks right now because just as you said, people who want to work can work and those who want the 30 days can take it. There should be no need to argue, judge, or justify your reasons, whichever you choose. I'm sorry your coworkers are judging you for quarantining instead of working because that's shitty and anyone should be able to stay home who wants to. But still, no need to be so harsh on partners in general who want to keep working, whether you determine they "need" the money or not. Calling them greedy isn't too different from saying that the people staying home are being lazy. There might be a-holes at your store but this is a scary, uncertain time and everyone is trying to make the right choices for themselves.

can i get hired by SB now and then take my 30 days paid right away?
seattle-random 3 points 3y ago
No. Why would you get paid for that? The 30 paid is based on how many hours you worked the month before the 30 days started.
kanyon01 2 points 3y ago
Hi! I’m not entirely sure about the rules on that. I assume they’d have to give it to everyone. But I doubt any location is hiring right now at this moment because all of the people taking the 30 days will be returning. So they would be essentially overloading themselves with employees.
