Coffee and Literacy: are customers okay?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Riptose13
So, are people okay? In the past 5 days I’ve had upwards of 30 customers I’ve never seen once at my store just completely fail at basic literacy skills and just yank at the locked doors.
The store is on a busy highway in a midsized city, probably the busiest one in the area. Because of the pandemic, we went down to reduced hours like a lot of stores, and we posted huge signs all over to let people know what the deal was. Two huge signs in the windows facing the entrances and the highway (like each letter is a piece of computer paper), an A frame by the speaker box, and another on the window itself.
So.
Why can’t people read? I had two masterpieces try and walk around me, a shift, and a manager as we are putting the truck shipment up as we are telling these two shining beacons of intellect gawk.
“Wayle, wut do you mean closed? I jus need my cold brew, it’ll take just a sec. You still have registers up, now?” Yes, I work in the south.
“No sir, everything is closed, it’s posted right there;” my manager tells this guy, pointing at the sign.
“But it’s just 2.” We know. Go home. Self-isolate. Stop drooling words onto the concrete and develop some critical thinking skills.
Big sick times = less coffee time
Does literacy require coffee? Is caffeine the crux of basic human function?
Rant complete. Barista bot: powering down.

That's not illiteracy, that's entitlement.
"I see busy people over here doing a job already. I see a line of people here, waiting for their turn to get coffee. The line is long and MY TIME is more valuable than the time of those busy workers or those other people waiting in line. After all, I \*just need\* 2 cold brews..."
Seems worse they'd entertain interrupting people clearly and visibly hard at work already, to bother them with a totally different, not at all related task on their whim, not for an emergency or anything important but just for 2 damn cold brews. It's gross, the privilege.

i like how literally everything else is closed or dt only, yet whole gaggles of people will get out of their car and try to get in. like they just crawled out from under a rock and don't know what's going on.

My friend is a financial counselor at a hospital, she's told me about all the precautions the hospital has taken to even get through the door, and their protocols for sanitization before and after meeting with a patient.
Then she goes home and completely disregards it. They have extended family coming and going constantly. I pissed her off last night by sending her a link to our governors directive to stay the fuck home.

Uh... nobody is okay right now. Nobody was okay 3 months ago, but they really aren't okay now. Almost nobody reads signs anymore, but some will try to interact with signs as if they are touch-screens. Coffee is absolutely tied to literacy, memory, reaction time and general cognitive function. Caffeine IS the crux of civilization. Did I miss any questions?
PS: Are you just now noticing this stuff? Are YOU okay? Lol... j/k be well!
Riptose13 [OP]13 points3y ago
No, I just don’t think ive ever seen it bad, or atleast not as apparent.
lilBalzac8 points3y ago
It is more concentrated because most of the sensible people are at home. Only people out are essential or they are lunatics. Lol. Stay safe.

I feel this in so many levels. I too work in the south and you would think people 40 and older would be at home not fucking around with anything outside. But no. They think it won’t get them. We just had a 17 year old die in New Orleans from COVID, the youngest person in the US as I have been told. Our governor waited too long and people can’t live without their daily routines
Kaywin2 points3y ago
Someone in Los Angeles that same age died of it too, and an infant in Chicago too I heard.
dhenry5111 points3y ago
There’s no way an infant has died. If so it’s because it came out and immediately died from it. Regardless it’s terrible and people need to stay at home
I stand corrected. I apologize. I just hate to see someone just starting life literally, then pass away months later. It’s just a sad morbid reality that surrounds us

well, let me you a little story. Several years back, we were getting our 10 year remodel and closed every day at 5pm (yes, they still kept us open) for 2 weeks. We had signs and everything. I was the closing shift so, naturally, I was the liaison between my SM and the general contractor.
Several days into the remodel, the general contractor comes to me and says, "so, last night I had this guy just staring at the menus. Thinking that it's a worker and he wasn't sure what to do and so I asked him what he needed. The guy just says that he's hasn't decided what he wanted to order yet. Of course, I proceeded to him him they were closed..."
As I'm listening to the contractor, I'm thinking that how did the guy not notice them remodeling the store? There was plastic covering everything and part of the store was deconstructed. I guess some people are so absorbed into themselves, they don't notice or care to notice that world around them. Unfortunately, there will always be those people.
Anytime people try to open doors when locked and we have signs stating the situation, I pretend they aren't there. It's much better for my mental health.

Starbucks has allowed their customers to be so babied for so long that they can’t handle it when there are rules implemented on them. I had to go to my store yesterday, we are closed, and this lady pulls up when I’m leaving and I told her we’re closed, she said but you just walked out, yeah because I’m a manger and employee here!! She still went through the drive thru and didn’t believe me.
raycamaro8 points3y ago
Actually, they live in a bubble and they really DON’T know what’s going on.
lewabwee7 points3y ago
My store has had to close a few times over the years and this isn’t remotely new. People are both beyond entitled and stupid. You’re only here for them so help them.
King_Spamula6 points3y ago
I only worked the first day of the 30 days so my store manager wouldn't have to find someone to replace me in just a couple hours. Now, I'm used to some customers being a little unconditioned to ordering over a speaker, but my God, the customers that came through the drivethru that day were almost all something special.
To make it short: the people who went to Starbucks during the quarantine were very stereotypical, and it was honestly shocking to experience it firsthand.

Uber Eats driver refused to get in the drive line to get his pickup, because it was long. He parked his car and walked to the window while a customer was paying to get it.
danslavraievie4 points3y ago
I work at a Tarbucks and this one Uber Eats driver came in with a bunch of drink orders when I was the only one working and we're not a real Starbucks and he repeatedly tried ordering drinks with blonde espresso when we don't have it and I told him that several times
DualWeaponSnacker2 points3y ago
I’ve worked at other places that deal with contracted delivery drivers. They’re assholes. All of them.

I love your writing style! You should write short stories

Have a cup of coffee on the house, pardner!

This has gotten so bad at our store, we put a big a frame right in front of our main entrance and wrote in huuuge letters that the cafe is closed and people will walk around it and pull on the doors.
We’ve also gotten a good bit of these people be pedestrians who will walk around the building through the busy drive through and try to order. And THEN there’s the pedestrians who didn’t read the sign, pulled on the doors, mobile ordered, and walked around through the drive through to pick up.
I’ve had it man, Im so done lol
Riptose13 [OP]1 points3y ago
Guy drives thru the box.
“ hey how’s it going?
Silence
Just me talking to ghosts again. Oh, hey Marv, tell me the one about dying by poisoned pimento cheese again, my dude.
malaika072 points3y ago
But the "medicine ball" really works! I need two grande medicine balls and a grande latte with vanilla bean powder. Of course people can't read but they don't want to. Same with "Are you open?" Even when they see me preparing drinks.

It makes you wonder if people should have the right to vote.
pupperoni-pizzas1 points3y ago
People have been far worse at other places I have worked at and I’m grateful that almost everyone I deal with on a regular basis these days is competent
