Thoughts on just using Apple Pay/Samsung Pay and SB Rewards for payment? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sunshine455
Here's what I don't understand(people are coming to Starbucks in the middle of a pandemic thinking its essential is beyond me but that's a different discussion for a different time, let's NOT talk about it).

Why are we still receiving cash? When we can recieve sources of payment using apple pay, samsung pay, scanning the Starbucks rewards as payment. That way we are limiting the exchange of cash/debit cards, and minimize the handling and transfer of cash. We won't have to touch anything that comes in from the outside. Since we're already closing lobbies and trying to minimize people from coming in, why can't we do the same with cash? Essentially the cash goes into the store, to the back room, into the safe, into our pockets when they come in as tips. So, what was the point in closing the lobbies in the first place?

I agreeeeee!!! I open 99% of the time so I get stuck at the window for the majority of my shift & I cringe every time I have to handle cash. We had a good amount of gloves but unfortunately ran out & I’m not sure when we’ll be getting any again. It’s a long walk from the window to the sink but I do it anyway. A customer even tried to scold me for not wearing any but she wasn’t wearing any either!!

At the bare minimum we would need to still offer physical card payment. Not everyone has a smart phone and can use the app or Apple Pay. I am glad that they’ve started making all of our gift cards with the scannable barcode instead of the magnetic strip. I wish we didn’t have to accept cash though. I’ve been asking customers to insert their credit cards while I hold the reader at DT and that’s helped minimize contact but there’s no perfect solution.

At least with a physical card they can insert it themselves like you said, or have those that only need to be tapped? Those are ok. But I'm just saying no cash would be great. It's just bizarre to me that they would think to close the lobbies but not figure out a way to mitigate spreading of germs/viruses when everyone already knows how dirty money is even without a pandemic going on.

Our store tried, and I mean really tried to do no cash. Our GM felt it was the best move for not only our safety for for our customers. It made me and all my fellow baristas feel so much safer. But it only lasted for 2 days. Someone, who we call Decaf Dave, came in about 15 minutes after opening and reemed us a new one because he felt our decisions were stupid. He said, other fast food is taking cash why aren't you guys. And we told him FOR OUR SAFETY. Long story short, our district manager said the customer is always right and we have to go back to taking cash. All of us the store are visibly more uncomfortable now. And someone who comes in every single day (Dave) isn't met with the same smiles he used to be becuase he is the sole reason we still have to touch dirty money.

I'm sorry that happened to you and your store. Good on you guys for trying though. It's so unfortunate how Starbucks customers feel so entitled. They just want what they want regardless of the expense of others(ie. Us baristas) and we just have to take it like it's normal behaviour. It's just coffee ffs, its not something to act so selfish and entitled over. Dave can go get it from his fastfood stores that take cash.
