My original store shutdown since it was cafe only, so I have been helping another drive thru store that is open. I get put at the window in the beginning of my shift to collect payment and hand out product. Probably 20 minutes into my shift I have a health care lady pull up to the drive thru asking about the free coffee to all medical workers promo that is going on. She pulls up to the window and pays for her cookie she got with her free coffee. I scan her phone and she isn’t looking at me at all. She was still talking to me without eye contact saying that her patients are sick right now, and that she has been so tired. Finally after I’m giving her the cookie she ordered, she says oh sorry I haven’t been looking at you, I haven’t been feeling well myself. All I could say was good luck out there and best I can do is wash my hands and wipe down the surrounding area. They encourage us to stay at home/work for a reason, who knows if this lady has it or not, but if I wasn’t feeling well myself I wouldn’t be in no drive thru lol

This is why I don't understand how the free coffee to health care providers was a good idea. It's a nice gesture but they should have done it after this gets better.

It was a good PR move at a time when Starbucks news was being dominated by angry baristas threatening to strike/unionize.

And then to balance out the potentially angry customers who “NeEd thEIr COffEe” when stores closed.

That’s it.

Starbucks shouldn’t be encouraging healthcare workers to come and get baristas sick. I admire them for what they’re doing, but they need to stay away from places they don’t have to go. At least other medical workers in hospitals have that built up immunity, but the general public doesn’t. Plus, it’s only plain coffee...they can easily get that from the work break room.
