hey everyone! i wanted to take a second to get other partners opinions on this. so my store's cafe is closed, we operate as a drive thru only these days. i didn't take the 30 day leave, neither did several of my coworkers. so we've been working through insane lines and just doing our best. customers know that they cannot pick up their mobile order unless they drive through the drive thru in a car. however, my manager has been having us give people their orders when they come to the door anyway. she also decided that the new rule was that if people call ahead, they can get their mobile orders at the door. this is really upsetting to me and other partners because it puts us at risk and it also defeats the purpose of not having our cafe open.

am i being unreasonably upset?

Is there a table you could place outside the door where you can just set it there so you can remain 6 feet apart from the customer?

Before my store closed we just turned off the mobile orders because they had to wait in the drive thru line and we'd have to end up remaking. It was a whole thing for being the only store left and just being open for 3 weeks. It also saved us from being yelled at, and people then chose to wait instead of feeling like they were "forced" to. Worth a shot asking, worse they can say is no...

No, you’re reasonably upset. We have had several people call the store and ask if we will run their mobile order outside to them because they “don’t have time to wait in line”. It’s entitlement and we really need to quit being soft of customers who want to bend the rules

My thing is, why can't they just go through the DT like everyone else? They certainly shouldn't be taking public transport to get there so I don't see a reason why they need to be in-store.

If your manager seem adamant in continuing to serve foot traffic customers, you could suggest setting up a no-contact system. Does your store have a vestibule? If so, you could potentially set up an area where you can place all mobile orders so that the customer isn't actually stepping foot in the store. That way, the employees would be the only ones touching the second door or anything inside the store. In addition to this system, I would suggest actually *locking* the second door so that customers can't force themselves in because as everyone in food service knows, that is unfortunately common.

i think it's a bad idea. to me, it's more than the customer proximity. i think that allowing customers to come to the door and pick up their order blurs the line too much for both customers and baristas. plus if it's peak, the last thing i want is to have to go unlock the door and bring a customer their drink. i see down in the thread that someones' store turned off mobile orders, which is a good idea anyways in my opinion.
