Got the first check with the extra pay and I already made $200 more than I normally do.(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m choosing to work because I have a strong immune system and I’m worried I might end up being the paycheck that gets the food/covers what my single parent can’t because he has to get the $1800 rent plus utilities plus his own bills like care insurance. The extra pay is helping especially since my money isn’t being spent on other things right now, since everything is closed.
keeendle102 points3y ago
I understand the need to keep working, especially with the extra pay. Sometimes it’s just not possible to self quarantine when you have other people to look out for. I can’t believe it amounted to $200 extra for you!
littleedge19 points3y ago
Isn’t it $3/hour? So a biweekly paycheck of 40 hours will get you $240 before taxes.
kait_lynb [OP]17 points3y ago
My normal wages are: $12.02/hr. If I get 20 hours a week, I get $240.40 before taxes for one week, so 2 weeks I would get $480.80 before taxes. After taxes are taken out and the 30 mins from lunches are deducted (if I had to take lunches) my checks usually end up being like $350ish. That’s on a good week for me. Now, add the $3 extra onto my pay and that means I’m getting $15.02/hr. If I get 20 hours a week, I get 300.40 before taxes for one week. So 2 weeks I would get $600.80 before taxes. After taxes, I should be looking at roughly $500ish. Now, this math does not include the fact that I now am getting more like 35-37 a week due to people not being able to work. Does this make sense? I’m not trying to be mean I promise!
Edit: I’m aware the tax percentage is a little weird. That’s why I said roughly. I don’t know for sure what percentage of taxes are taken out of my checks because I’m dumb :)
proletarithot27 points3y ago
So it’s not really that the raise is worth it. It’s that’s you’re working twice as much. Obviously you’ll make more money if you’re busting ass for 40 hours a week instead of 20.
I sincerely appreciate you working, don’t get me wrong. Just seems weird to draw attention to the money when it’s barely the $3 raise making a difference.
Honestly I’d pay $24 a day (which is how much extra you make for an 8hr shift) to protect the health of myself, my family, and my community.
littleedge3 points3y ago
I don’t know what you’re asking me.
If you work 40 hours, the $3 raise will provide you $240 of additional money before tax after two weeks of work.
If you don’t work 40 hours, you wouldn’t see that. If you work 20 hours a week, you’ll only see half. Then the $3 raise is worth $120 every two weeks.
probation_4204 points3y ago
If you normally - outside of coronavirus - work 20 hours, but you're now working 40 hours, then it's missing the point when you talk about the extra money made due to the $3 raise. The extra money is primarily due to the doubling of working hours.
whamablamslam0 points3y ago
Your math here is a little weird. Why did you take off about 27% in taxes in your first example, but only 8% in your second?
kait_lynb [OP]0 points3y ago
That’s why I said roughly my dude. I don’t know the exact percentage of taxes are taken out of each check. That’s why I didn’t say exactly, and theirs the ‘ish’ at the end. My apologies.

I am living for the math reads in this thread

Okay, no shame to you whatsoever but please find something else to post about . The post you're reffering to where you were "shamed" (which you have since deleted) was a very civil discussion. You said you found the incentive for taking the pay was a raise and were actually quite judgemental to those who did not take the raise. I have no issue with people who have chosen to stay onto work, honestly I'm envious you're in the position to do so, the extra pay would be great. However no one shamed you in that discussion and since then you have made 2 posts about how you were shamed.
If it was a separate issue, like your coworkers or other people shaming you for it I apologise and that is not on.
But before you post about how you were "shamed" by the people of reddit again, please look over the comments you made in that deleted post.
kait_lynb [OP]-27 points3y ago
Same could go for you. Could you stop being so negative on my posts? It’s a hard enough time already, I don’t need you breathing down my neck calling out what I deleted and telling me how I should feel or how I should interpret things on here. I deleted that post because I felt some negativity over something that I wasn’t initially intending to cause negativity. Thanks, have a great day! 🙃
rararat9921 points3y ago
If you felt uncomfortable with that discussion that's fine, I can't tell you how to feel of course. I understand its hard times for everyone. But if you continue to claim other batistas on here are shaming you , I will continue to call you out if I see it. And I wasn't breathing down the back of your neck, I just recognised the username due to our previous interaction where I felt you were quite judgemental. And I certainly wasn't negative on your other post.
I hope you take away from this that being judgemental/negative cannot be solved by deleting what you said and if you're going to wrongfully cry for sympathy, be prepared for someone to notice.

No need for an apology. I only said something as you made it appear as though the community here was shaming you and that I personally was being negative to you.
I'm sure if you've forgotten what you said, you've probably forgotten what was actually said to you. Obviously you don't need to alter your post, it's your opinion and I gave mine.
I genuinely do hope you remain happy with the work situation you are in. Its tough times for us all.

No shame in it! I took the self quarantine option as I have another job that is still paying me, and my wife is still able to work. It makes me happy to know that the raise I gave up is making that big a difference to those who need it/ could really use it right now. I honestly viewed it as a gift I was giving my fellow baristas. Plus, I’m digging the down time!
Domestica19 points3y ago
>I have a strong immune system
even if you were to catch it and your immune system fights it off, **you can still spread it to others** and they might not be as lucky.
I could get evicted without my paycheck. Getting paid and securing a place to stay and food on the table is important to me too. I’m sorry.
Domestica3 points3y ago
What about the cat pay? It’s been extended til May 3rd. You would still receive a paycheck
kait_lynb [OP]7 points3y ago
My average hours a week are 12-20. That won’t help me at all.
Domestica7 points3y ago
That’s a bummer! Well stay safe and stay healthy ❤️
mxs42351 points3y ago
But isn’t that what you were making previous to cat pay? Your average should be close enough to what you were making previously and so if you were able to afford rent previously, not working now and taking cat pay should have you in the same financial situation.
Wai_ka7 points3y ago
I wish I could work, I live on an island where we only have cafe stores. And we are all closed. So kudos to all of you who are out there still working . Proud to be your partner! Thank you for all you do.
kvllifornia7 points3y ago
Same! Also week I made $135 in tips. Came out to $3 and some change per hour, so we were all making $6 more than our regular pay. This weeks tips are definitely going to come out to even more
jams10154 points3y ago
I'm glad you are getting enough to cover you and your dad's groceries. That's a big deal and I am certain he appreciates all the support you bring to your household, too! Stay safe out there. <3
CriticalSheep4 points3y ago
Absolutely no shame from me! I’m still working too. My husband is in construction and could be laid off any day because of delayed deliveries. So while I’m still working a full time job that pays a lot more, if he gets laid off we have to recoup the cost of unemployment (less than half his monthly take home) with our part time jobs.
c_reckless353 points3y ago
Yes I agree. I can't sit around all day, so I'm more than happy to keep working and make an extra $3/hour. Plus my store closed so I transferred to another store and getting mileage. Every little bit helps. I understand some people can't work and that's totally fine too
bbun2233 points3y ago
People keep saying the $3 isn’t a big difference... but it is. I live in Canada and I’m an SSV so I make 17.10 an hour. Now I’m making $20 an hour. It ends up being an extra $100 on my paycheque. I’m the only person in my household working. My moms unemployment is going to take weeks to kick in. That $100 means I can pay my rent AND feed us. I don’t know. It’s a big deal to me. But my paycheque usually JUST covers my rent. Now I don’t have to worry about not being able to buy groceries.... and now there’s potential to make even more then that extra 100.... I went into over time this week because of partners taking the cat pay. I didn’t make my decision to stay at work lightly, I still worry about it everyday... but I have no savings and all of the household bills to worry about.
kait_lynb [OP]1 points3y ago
Exactly! That’s what I’m saying. I hope all goes well for you!
analiseh183 points3y ago
No shame!! I’m still working, and the $3 extra plus our crazy good tips have me feeling pretty good right now ;)
nightkat892 points3y ago
What’s the point of this post? To brag? I mean we already know as partners about the pay increase for those who are working or are able to work.
kait_lynb [OP]2 points3y ago
It’s not to brag, but I do see how it does seem that way. I meant it to be more of a “the extra pay makes a difference”. I’m sorry if my post has offended you, I understand not all Baristas (non corporate ones to be exact) have the same options as partners. Again, I apologize.
nightkat892 points3y ago
It’s all good. Be safe and stay well.
phat_pheasant2 points3y ago
I took CAT pay and got half of what i normally get :( But im not risking it for my immunodeficient sister hecc that
crzyshiba2 points3y ago
Hey no shame it’s your personal choice , although my store had to shut down I still pick up at least 3 shifts a week only cause I want to get better at bar haha
1b1rd1 points3y ago
Also made ~200 more! I've been appreciating the structure of working while my store leans heavy into caution/policy.
I'll be honest, I didn't take cat pay because of my parents' passive aggressive comments that the people who choose to work get the promotions. Kinda bittersweet to be promoted to barista trainer starting today...
kait_lynb [OP]1 points3y ago
Yeah I feel you on the passive comments. My dad kept saying the company would remember the ones that continued to work. But I’m over here like, if a company shames people for staying home when they have the option and it’s a pandemic, that’s pretty trash
1b1rd2 points3y ago
I get where my dad is coming from – it's hard to remember someone you haven't seen in 2+ months when you're looking to fill a position. I'm super happy with my decision but I wish that guilt trip could let me feel like it was really MY decision.
kait_lynb [OP]1 points3y ago
Aw I feel you. I hope all goes well my friend!
andersonm4991 points3y ago
I looked at an old check with the same amount of hrs I worked and I made roughly $100 and that’s with one week of the extra pay My next check with 2 weeks and many more hrs is going to look good about double of normal paycheck because of the extra hrs and extra pay
