To the Karen that came by yesterday and her son...(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SickAndTiredOfKarens
Why? Why would you come to Starbucks if you are THAT paranoid? You pull up right as I’m getting into the window position. I greet you with a smile and say “just a moment” so that I can wipe down everything with a sanitizer wipe. I’m wiping down the screens, the scanner, the cash drawer, card reader, everything here, down to the upper window ledge that I know I sometimes graze.
And you’re there with an N95 mask on and I tell you it’s $27ish something and your son mumbles some speech from the passenger seat.
“What?”
*mumbles in passenger*
“I’m having a hard time hearing you would you please speak up?”
“I’m a partner and would like to use my food and beverage markout”
Oh sure! Okay cool what’s dem numbers? Then your mom now pipes in.
“I’m supposed to have new lids!”
...
“So you want new lids... like on the side?”
“Yes”
Okay... check you’ve got two ventis and a tall, hand off the assorted lids.
“Can I get stoppers? But don’t touch them”
Oh yeah. That’s right. I had levitation powers this whole time and I just didn’t think they’d be helpful these days.
Pretended I didn’t hear you because I don’t want to bother with the whole, “I’m not letting you pick your own stoppers out of the box” ordeal.
Alright let’s hand out these drinks!
As I hand them, one at a time, handling only the bottom of the cup, she takes her time and wipes down every side of the cup with a sani wipe.
“I need a drink holder.”
Sure. Okay.
*wipes down the carrier*
“Here’s your two foods maa’m.”
“Can I get a bag?”
*visibly irritated now*
“Sure”
Hands off bag. *wipes profusely*
She rolls up her window, no thanks, no goodbye, nothing. And I’m okay with that. Because if it gets you out of my face that much sooner, good.
Shame on you.
Shame on your son too.
Please do not come back. You do not bring us joy. You are not “doing us a favor” and “keeping us busy”. You are exhausting. If you are that concerned, please stay home. Your son, who was not wearing a mask and not wiping down drinks, is totally entitled to his partner beverage and food. I think it’s great partners are taking advantage of it, but then go to your store if you don’t trust a different one.
Also, N95s are scarce right now and you wearing one to your precious Starbucks trip makes you that much more awful.
Long vent. But I needed to rant. People are entitled these days and expressing so much “concern”, but heaven forbid any concern stop Karen from having her venti nonfat no foam vanilla latte.
Sincerely, Someone now on the fence on cat pay

After yesterday I am super on the fence about cat pay. Yesterday was absolutely hell. The ding never stopped, two no-call-no-shows, every single car had no less than four drinks to order. line was wrapped out to the street, and we just couldn't keep up. Legit the only perk was getting to take home a large shopper of sandwiches and protein boxes because the DPI order was doubled on accident.
I even had a woman pull up with a paper mask on and a cigarette in her hand...

I hate the part about assholes running you ragged during a pandemic but I love the part about you getting a large shopper of goodies. That is hand's down my favorite part about our job after my fellow partners and free Doubleshots (Venti, extra shot, 3 pumps white mocha, no classic, sub soy)!
ashley-leigh12 points3y ago
We have the same drink! Mmmmmm I miss it so much, haven’t had it since I took the cat pay. I don’t feel right going to a store making partners work when I decided to take the time off. I have a few pounds of coffee that should last me until I have to go back.
jams101510 points3y ago
I'm biased, but you have fantastic taste in drinks.
I haven't had it since I've been on cat pay, either, same reason as you. I am so incredibly fortunate enough that I don't need it, and I'm not risking my partners or my family for something I just want. I can't justify it to myself.
cfuqua17 points3y ago
You are getting paid your normal pay (based on Feb hours) to stay at home. If you instead choose to work, you get the same pay, plus $3.
Which means if you choose to work, you get paid $3 per hour of work (up to the amount of hours you worked in Feb).
Stay home. Get paid. Quarantine. Your time is worth more than $3/hr.
PM_YOUR_TOTS15 points3y ago
please don’t be on the fence on cat pay. my store is in the middle of a crowded city and across the street from one of the world’s top hospitals. with the way customers were behaving right before they closed it down, i have no doubt every single one of us would have been infected within a month at absolute most.
people were touching us to grab their items. some people thought it was a fun joke to cough at us and everything around us because they didn’t take any of this seriously.
if it weren’t for cat pay, none of us would be able to afford to live. and those of us that were still working would be risking our lives for absolutely no good reason (some with multiple autoimmune disorders).

Glad to read I’m not alone, but sorry you’re going through the same shit. I’m hoping it’s just Sundays? But don’t you love it when people pull up with masks and gloves and then take off their mask to talk to you? /s
CriticalSheep4 points3y ago
Saturday was exactly the same. From the second we opened, we had non stop cars- they wrapped around the building, went down the street and had to funnel into one singular DT lane. We had constant calls from people mobile ordering (WTF CORPORATE TURN OFF MOBILE ORDER!) wanting us to run their orders out to them. "No sorry we can't leave the building"
thehalima49 points3y ago
I don’t understand these people. Is it that hard to stay at home? Live without a $5 diabetes bomb for a few months. I’m so sorry you had to go through that
nobullshitplz17 points3y ago
Seriously. At least it makes sense when you see people who DONT think it’s serious. They don’t think it’s serious so why should they care? But somebody who takes it so seriously to the point of what OP described? That’s freaking ridiculous and they should’ve just stayed home
ladyelenawf3 points3y ago
This is exactly why I don't stop by on my supply runs. I miss my sugar fix, but y'all don't deserve the stress.
nobullshitplz18 points3y ago
I understand people who don’t think the virus is serious much more than this type of person. The only reason to wear a mask and do all of that is that you think this is very serious. At that point if you’re wiping down a cup, then you’re just a plain idiot to be in the drive thru in the first place. At least it doesn’t go against somebody’s thoughts/beliefs if they go through the drive thru
jams101510 points3y ago
I was going to say, maybe if they were broke as fuck, had no food, and the kid in the backseat needed to rely on his markout to survive... then yeah, I understand the tedium. But they clearly have enough $ to get supplies like food if they can spend $27 on coffee and junk food, so. Yeah, go to a grocery store, take those precautions THERE, bulk shop for at least 30 days' supplies, stay home the next month and stop making other people jump through your hoops.
That partner sounds sucky as hell. I wonder if he was a younger kid (under 18) being forced by his mom? I hate to think of one of us being such an oblivious twat.
sb_4116 points3y ago
You’d be surprised. I’ve had partners come in and do the most ridiculous things. Asking for a tall lemonade in a venti cup with extra juice, asking for a grande nitro in a trenta cup, taking cat pay but still coming in to get SARs (before we were given the markouts) I could go on. Most partners are amazing but there are some who have that same customer entitlement.
SickAndTiredOfKarens [OP]4 points3y ago
Oh no, he was definitely past 18. Much closer to mid-late 20’s. The fact that he wasn’t wearing a mask made me more infuriated because then it could have been JUST HIM going through the drive getting HIS markout and it would have been fine!
thecuriouslittleben10 points3y ago
It's people like that that eventually led me to putting in my cat pay.... I thought the $3 increase was worth the trouble. It definitely was not worth it.....
Marinaseaglass9 points3y ago
See, here's how I'm confused about the $3 increase.... If I went in to work right now instead of taking the time off pay, I'd basically be choosing to work for $3 an hour because that is what I'd be getting paid for working instead of staying home....
I've just kind of figured that people choosing to work either had terrible hours in February that their pay was based on or were new hires... are there actually people working for what basically amounts to $3/hr?
noeyoureatowel2 points3y ago
Most of my store is still working, they don’t see it as very serious and all want the “extra” money. I’m going back today (I was on self quarantine) because I’m feeling some pressure to support my store, but I’m very on the fence about it.
Marinaseaglass2 points3y ago
I feel you on the pressure to support your store, I'm very lucky in that my SM and coworkers all were encouraging about staying home (we live in an area with high reported numbers). If you feel safe to go back, go ahead, but if you feel uncomfortable anytime after today, don't hesitate to choose to take the stay at home pay.
I get it, because I was super stressed about abandoning and missing my coworkers, until I found out they chose to stay home too, a few days later.
CampLeo2 points3y ago
Except I'm a new hire. Because I have no February hours I was given the barista average of 20.3 hours per week. I'm super glad since I was working 16-18 for my training (plus I was commuting, so my SM was going to bump me up once I moved... I thought I'd be touring apartments right now lol).
Marinaseaglass1 points3y ago
Yes, you are exactly the kind of person that makes sense to be working now, because you NOT working is losing a lot more than $3/hr. Hopefully it's going ok, and after this is over, your trial by fire days make the rest seem easier by comparison💚
CampLeo1 points3y ago
I'm the type of person it makes sense NOT to be working. My store is closed and I'd be a green bean borrowed partner who it doesn't make sense to give a ton of hours right now.
thecuriouslittleben1 points3y ago
From what I understand if you take the cat pay you'll be given the you're normal wage and if you decide to stay you'll get an extra $3 per hour you work
Marinaseaglass2 points3y ago
That's what I'm saying, an "extra" $3/hr to work vs. staying home, is still only getting paid $3/hr to work if you'd get the rest anyway.
acertwo9 points3y ago
Before my store closed, my partners didn’t understand why I got so mad at people coming in with masks, being super fucking pushy about us not touching anything, or wiping down every inch of the thing before they drink it. It’s because those people are so fucking addicted to Starbucks that they’d actually risk getting the virus or spreading it just because they need that coffee, and that mask doesn’t do anything when you drink from the damn cup later on Karen.
retsehassyla8 points3y ago
I was on the fence and took it because for my own sanity, I can’t handle the constant dinging and the ass wipe customers, and being planted for 6hrs straight, and shitty coworkers at a store that isn’t even mine.
burtmaclin20158 points3y ago
You would think that person (as a partner) would know better. I have absolutely no issues with being served by a partner wearing gloves, and holding out the ccard machine for me to insert my card for the sole purpose of not making any contact. And if the DT takes longer than usual, so be it.
That Karen went over the line, and was just rude. For every Karen in the DT line, there are probably 15-20 good customers behind her that are more appreciative and understanding of the current Covid-19 "new normal."
