Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Full History - 2020 - 04 - 06 - ID#fw5f81

Required to wear masks starting tomorrow and they want us to fashion them from cold brew filters 😭. I’m putting that whole damn thing over my head and poking two holes for eyes so when customers inevitably take my picture I can’t be identified. 😭😭😭 (self.starbucksbaristas)

If Starbucks is requiring us to wear masks they need to provide proper PPE to all partners. This is ridiculous.

$1

If the pockets are still in good shape you can make 7 masks from one apron.
teet_teet [OP] 102 points 3y ago
We can bring or fashion our own from home but anything cloth has to be washed after every single shift without any exceptions. Anytime they have to be touched to be adjusted hands have to be washed. We had a few of our remaining partners drop off today because they don’t want to have to do it. It just gets harder for those of us who are still here every day.
helgathehorriblez 95 points 3y ago
Please don’t. A cold brew filter is about 74 micron and the virus is 0.125 micron.... that means about 592 virus particles could march through your filter and infect you.
teet_teet [OP] 61 points 3y ago
Yeah it’s a corporate thing. Video and all.
helgathehorriblez 96 points 3y ago
I spoke to my DM she said that it’s “something Starbucks is experimenting with while trying to obtain actual masks” to which I beg everyone to stand up for themselves and just go out on cat. Pay
seacookie89 7 points 3y ago
That's fucking stupid. They should at least recommend making one like the surgeon general demonstrated.
raychelelaina 13 points 3y ago
March through...each hole?
helgathehorriblez 13 points 3y ago
Like red-rover! 👯‍♀️👯👯‍♂️
lewabwee 5 points 3y ago
Yeah they’re coffee filters. They’re literally designed to let water through.
NOTcreative- 5 points 3y ago
How many microns is the mucus droplets that actually host and transfer the virus? It lives in droplets, it’s not gonna sneak it’s way out of the mucus, slip though a 74 micron hole, and jump into anyone’s mouth
helgathehorriblez 4 points 3y ago
Evolutionary adaptation is a mysterious thing my friend. For all you know, next Easter it will look like the great pumpkin Charlie Brown.
NOTcreative- -21 points 3y ago
For all you know in two weeks this thing levels out and drops. Majority of new cases are in two states, New York and New Jersey, subtract them from the equation and nationally new cases are dropping. Everything all the experts have spent time and money studying tirelessly around the clock to understand this and prevent it. You’re talking about people who spend their life studying it. They have a grasp on how it spreads and false information about how it spreads as the experts know it only makes the situation worse as people are more worried about the air they breathe than washing their hands.
helgathehorriblez 19 points 3y ago
I live in NY. I live in Westchester County. They’re just NOW doing this... it’s too late for this area. If the want to flatten the curve here it means closing this location. Otherwise- it’s peeing on an inferno. I worked in a lab for 11 years before moving to this state. I was on my hospitals Ebola Response Team during Ebola. I worked in Research for 7 years working with infectious diseases, including HIV, Hepatitis, CMV, and a multitude of other pathogens that are quite gross. After moving found out they decided AGAINST accepting my out of state license to be transferred in. (Hence why I’m at Starbucks) my partner makes a lot more money than I do- again why I ended up moving. We bought a house here. The standard precaution on a hospital is airborne pathogen precautions for this. I know because the hospital I worked at called and asked me to come back and help with their response. My answer was unfortunately, I can’t. There are a multitude of reasons why I can’t. Regardless, if you’re within six feet on someone, touch something someone else touch, don’t know the correct procedure to don/doff you recently made or acquired masks- you’re looking at further risk of infecting yourself or someone else. Not for nothing, but partners struggle to handle basic QASA standards much less something this. There’s no guidance from corporate regarding how masks should be utilized. If you’re allowed to wear your mask in the bathroom or not. Do you need a fresh mask after returning from the restroom. Nor do they have guidance with eye contact. OSHA says employers should be discouraging shared workspaces and work items like keyboards/pens/etc- yet we share all of those items in addition to iPads, pitchers, blenders, shakers, espresso machines, grinders, all lot of which can’t be dipped in sanitizer/easily frequently sanitized in a food safe manner. There’s also the issue of shared headsets with nothing more than a San-wipe the does a small portion of the job IF they’re allowed the proper contact times.... which almost never happens. Why we don’t have UV sanitizing cabinets idk- they’re not prohibitively expensive when one costs about the same as one headset. Regardless, my statement was supposed to be making light of a pretty sad situation. But take it as you will. The point of the matter is- coffee filters are NOT suggested by the CDC nor OSHA for a lot of reasons. If sediment from cold brew can visible be see in the bottom of cold brew why would you consider it even slightly safe to breath through during your shift? I assure you, the particle size is a lot smaller than cold brew sediment.
harleyhoudini 74 points 3y ago
Yeah I’m thinking about cat pay based on this. I’m the only deaf partner in my store and this would affect me mentally because I wouldn’t be able to lip read any one of my partners. I have a lot of past experiences where it makes me uneasy anytime I need to try and understand someone with a mask on
crumbypeople 21 points 3y ago
I hope you feel supported in whatever decision you make. There is a lot already to be uneasy about.
mxmistyeyed 5 points 3y ago
There are clear plastic mouthed masks that dentists use for Deaf patients who lipread. Maybe you could find some for your team... But it is ridiculous that we have to even talk about it :(
harleyhoudini 7 points 3y ago
Yeah my SM says she’ll get it for play callers only. She kinda missed the mark there.... I meant everyone should have it because I know I have partners that are not play callers that would be upset if I didn’t understand or couldn’t make eye contact with them like at all. But also, I explained I the reasoning and it’s like it went over her head still.

We’ll see how this week goes
mxmistyeyed 1 points 3y ago
Im sorry for u friend:( communication is important. SM get with it!! We are all here for you <3
pleasesurpriseme 5 points 3y ago
I hadn’t even thought of this, I’m so sorry! What a frustrating decision to make. I hope whatever choice you make you feel supported. Personally, I took the cat pay ages ago. My partner and other family members would be extremely at risk if I bring the virus home.
prillykai 2 points 3y ago
My store has a deaf shift and I was talking to him about how this could effect him. I really hope something better can happen so that all partners are able to work comfortably.
RegularFrappuccino 60 points 3y ago
TAKE 👏🏿 PAID 👏🏿 LEAVE 👏🏿
teet_teet [OP] -55 points 3y ago
I don’t have it in me. I am here for my team and my store manager.
criesincoffee 65 points 3y ago
Don't drink the kool-aid, comrade. Take care of yourself first in this situation, you deserve better than cold brew filter masks. If your store ends up closing due to lack of staff, that's probably for the better. Most customers still coming in aren't essential and every day stores stay open more people are put at risk.
NOTcreative- -17 points 3y ago
They are sending masks out to all stores. It’s a last resort option of fashioning a mask out of materials we have and not take away from the medical community. Plenty of other options out there. I’m buying my team bandanas. You’re sitting at home getting paid to do nothing while people are trying to figure out how they are going to pay rent and you act like Starbucks is communist? They’re the company doing more than any other company out there to support their partners.

Starbucks doesn't give a shit about their partners, don't kid yourself.
helgathehorriblez 25 points 3y ago
It’s irresponsible to continue serving public that isn’t adhering to social distancing guidelines. Drive thru windows and partner contact are less than 6ft. We are way behind the curve on preventing anything. We’ve already spread it to customers. Half of all of those infected have no symptoms. Starbucks likely could be traced to more deaths than its willing to admit. It’s corporate greed praying on the uneducated and money starved baristas. Corporate workers are working from home. DMs and RDs MAY show up for a short shift or quick DT hello, but they’re not having the same risk as everybody else. You are disposable. You are only worth $3 more an hour plus whatever the masses pity drop into your tip jar. You are responsible for yourself nobody else. If everybody stood together on this maybe Starbucks would understand lowly baristas are what keep this company working, we are just numbers to them- nothing more.

Your team and manager will understand. Every day we remain open we further put the public in danger.
NOTcreative- -4 points 3y ago
We are the most sterile environment to be in of people still working outside of hospitals. Not a single partner has reported testing partner all across NA.
RegularFrappuccino 8 points 3y ago
We have had several in our state test positive
knifepit 2 points 3y ago
I know of at least 2 partners that have tested positive in my state and before you ask, my source is my sm and my dm
nonews420 18 points 3y ago
thats the starbucks cultlike indoctrination talking. TAKE LEAVE. its not about you or your team, its about not infecting others. sbux is NOT essential.

Okay so you dont want to take leave but what if you got other people sick? Theres no way of knowing if you could have it or be a carrier of it. Its not about how long youve been with the company or your loyalty to you manager. Theyre a manager, its their responsibility. Of course its nice to help out, but sometimes less is more.
NOTcreative- 0 points 3y ago
Good for you!! Don’t let the downvotes get to you. But if you’re truly anxious about it stay home but if you’re feeling good mentally, emotionally, and physically; you’re doing good work partner
teet_teet [OP] -3 points 3y ago
Thanks for your support. My feelings are definitely not the popular vote but I’m just not going to bail. Things are good for now. The people who are here want to be here. We have no bad attitudes, no gossip, no drama; everyone is in good spirits. And I’ll remember who stuck around.
nonews420 0 points 3y ago
you are drama though. TAKE PAID LEAVE
NOTcreative- -1 points 3y ago
Love where your mind is at, your team is lucky to have you! After all this you should talk to your SM about development opportunities. We need more people like you in leadership roles. You’ll remember who stuck around and your leadership team will remember how you stuck around!
grunkle_spooky 49 points 3y ago
You're fucking kidding me. Y'all, take the cat pay. This is ridiculous.
abbye_a 22 points 3y ago
With the cat pay, I don’t have enough money for bills. My average hours for those two weeks were during an hour cut. Some of us have actual reasons to stay.
grunkle_spooky 10 points 3y ago
Oh shit, that really sucks, I'm sorry. Most of the posts I keep seeing are people feeling bad about taking the pay, being there to support fellow partners/a guilt tripping SM, ect. The hour cuts were still within my normal availability and didn't really affect my hours, so I for get about this.
ashykiinz 3 points 3y ago
You can use any sick time to compensate for extra hours! Starbs is making an exception for using sick time without being sick :) if you have enough saved up that is. I totally feel this though
Rupindah 2 points 3y ago
I thought the average was for the last quarter?
abbye_a 1 points 3y ago
If so I was HIGHLY misinformed. I’ve heard a couple different things but can’t find it anywhere on the hub
Whagarble 1 points 3y ago
It's basically the average of your hours for four weeks before everything started.

What are you being told that differs from that??
LittleHellkat 3 points 3y ago
Same I can’t survive on the cat pay. I only had a total of 26 hours for February because I was gone for surgery. I usually work 34 hours before any approved OT so it’s a massive cut I can’t afford. If I took the cat pay I’d probably lose my car and very important medications. I feel backed into a corner with all this and it sucks.
Ristrettosharts 2 points 3y ago
Not to continue to spread more misinformation because I am an SM and the literature on average hours for cat pay is also hard for even us to get ahold of, but I had a barista take over a month long LOA and she’s getting cat pay for over 30 hours. She came back the day that cat pay was announced. I’d call the PRSC and ask them to explain it for you- maybe you’d be okay taking the cat pay after all!
Ajskdjurj 29 points 3y ago
My manger hasn’t said anything to us. Do you know if I can wear my surgical mask? I just found out I’m 5 weeks pregnant so wouldn’t mind wearing one just to be on the safe side.
criesincoffee 48 points 3y ago
Tbh if you're not allowed to wear a surgical mask I would take the paid leave. You're pregnant and that can come with higher risk factors, so look out for your family.
Ajskdjurj 9 points 3y ago
Yea I’m on the schedule this week but I think I’m going to talk to my manger and tell him I will take the cat pay. I should because I read it’s bad if I get a fever before 6 weeks affects the baby. I really didn’t want to tell my boss til I was at least 4 months.
[deleted] 1 points 3y ago
[deleted]
RegularFrappuccino 26 points 3y ago
They recommend against it but I think you would be fine as you are pregnant and high risk. Although honestly why not take the paid leave?
helgathehorriblez 11 points 3y ago
Take leave.
Ajskdjurj 2 points 3y ago
Yea I think I am next week
Jeffuk88 11 points 3y ago
No it specifically says not to wear medical masks because of the current shortage experienced by health care workers. They don't want to encourage partners to buy what little supply may be left
grunkle_spooky 4 points 3y ago
I was assuming they meant no n95 masks.
goose_baby 5 points 3y ago
What kind of surgical mask? The N95 or the ones that fit more loosely? The looser fitting ones are okay.
lunaflect 3 points 3y ago
You can but I’d wear it under a fabric mask. They don’t want it to look like we’re taking masks from the doctors even though apparently we’re just as essential. Most home made masks are made with a filter pocket for you to insert your surgical masks if you already have some.
Ajskdjurj 3 points 3y ago
I made one out of a shirt. My only problem is it’s very hard to breath in it. I’m debating to take the cat pay they use the average hours of feb?
lunaflect 4 points 3y ago
Yes it’s average from February to beg of March. Do take the paid leave. Talk to your manager ASAP. I’ve been wearing a double layer mask to grocery shop and it’s suffocating. I can’t imagine making drinks or working the oven wearing one, I already get pretty sweaty there from all the pressure and running around
Ajskdjurj 3 points 3y ago
Yea I would still get paid 30ish hours which isn’t bad. Yea I may talk to him tomorrow and let him know to keep it a secret I 100% do not want to tell anyone.
xiew 1 points 3y ago
Yo go home. Take the cat pay. Not worth the 3$
helgathehorriblez 28 points 3y ago
NOBODY SHOULD GO TO WORK- EVERYBODY NEEDS TO TAKE LEAVE NOW!
paxmcc18 18 points 3y ago
I’m considering taking paid leave now
AdrielleFox24 6 points 3y ago
I’ve been on paid leave since March 13th before their catastrophe pay policy was as open as it is now. I actually spent a week gathering baristas and customers to call the Starbucks business numbers and complain about the lack of partner care. Then they opened the pay up and gave us better benefits.

They’re offering you leave, take it. Don’t give this company anymore because they’ll just keep taking and taking. Thank you for staying as long as you did.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Take care of yourself, friend.
Albatross241 17 points 3y ago
If we need our own masks, maybe that’s a sign we should close. Just saying. +$3/hr to sound like Darth Vader all day ain’t gonna do it for me
ViiaSenju 8 points 3y ago
if anyone is on the verge of just taking cat payment, take this as a signal and just do it. Starbucks clearly isn't an essential business and risking your health for a company that doesn't give a shit (mostly) about its employees is not worth getting sick over.

Edir: "Do it" instead of "don't"
RestingBaristaFace 8 points 3y ago
I was not told about the cold brew filters. It was just made clear that it’s my responsibility to go home after working 8 hours at Starbucks, then another 5 and a half at my other job, and cut up every spare apron I have to sew 8 so all partners will have one tomorrow because I have a sewing machine.
pleasesurpriseme 6 points 3y ago
That’s bullshit and unfair.
lunaflect 5 points 3y ago
The main point of wearing a mask right now is to act like you are the one whose sick. Then you can’t spread it to others. Anything that can stop the germs from going into the world will help, and it’ll keep you from touching your face as much, as long as you’re not adjusting the mask. Wearing a mask sucks though and I’m sorry.
Peebles46 5 points 3y ago
Take the cat pay
blueteas 3 points 3y ago
i get it, being there for your team , and it’s part of the reason i’m still working as of now but please reassess why you are prioritizing your job (which yes you have been here for a long time) over yours and everyone’s health. you say things are fine and good now but so did the US govt not too long ago and now we have the highest cases out of anyone
275bruhista 3 points 3y ago
I just made two masks today out of an old T-shirt with no prior sewing knowledge. It took awhile but they turned out nice. Here’s the YouTube link to the video I followed along with:

I’ve deadass been toying with the idea of wearing a motorcycle helmet to my next shift.

make one out of an old apron
Fadelox 2 points 3y ago
I read “make one out of an old person”
FedoraBarista 2 points 3y ago
THIS LMAO
malaika07 1 points 3y ago
I didn't think of making a mask out of filters. The grocery store manager passed out masks and told us to reuse and not to get it dirty.
Chef_Spaetzle 1 points 3y ago
My SM just comissioned me to make some for our partners
starkid08 1 points 3y ago
Go home and take the cat pay, make sure your family is ready for this.
PM_ME_YOUR__PUPPIES 1 points 3y ago
So I’ve been looking into sewing simple masks for myself and coworkers because I can’t see my boss getting us masks anytime soon... Ill probably take leave soon but still want one for getting gas and groceries. Does anyone know the best option? I’ve seen two layer masks with a pocket for a filter but I don’t know about the coffee filter actually working... I’ve also seen flannel as a good dense fabric but I’m not sure. Everything online just says don’t use surgical or N-95s, save those for medical professionals, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what alternatives there are.
CriticalSheep 1 points 3y ago
Wasabi-ragga 0 points 3y ago
This is dumb af, starbucks has money they could buy masks.
teet_teet [OP] 9 points 3y ago
They are trying to acquire them. There is a shortage if you’ll remember.
