What’s the longest pay-it-forward chain you’ve seen?(self.starbucksbaristas)

Girlfriend and myself thought it would be interesting to hear about from baristas what the longest pay-it-forward chain you’ve had? Or similar to it, what was it like when it ended?

to be honest i usually cut it off before it can get too long because it gets confusing about whose order is what and honestly it just gets annoying. i understand the idea behind it, but there are better ways to spend your money than paying for someone’s frappuccino, donate it to a charity or someone’s go fund me

I agree. It gets confusing fast! And sometimes you can tell the person doesn’t actually want to “pay it forward”, but they feel pressured to because their drink was paid for. I also feel bad when they ordered 1 drink and the people behind them have a $27 order. Sometimes when that happens and they ask, “How much do the people behind me have?” I just say, “around $5.50” and then they’re like, “cool. Yea. I’ll pay for them!”. And when those people pull up I say, “the person in front of you paid for one of your drinks! So now your total is $22.50!” ☺️And it usually ends there and everyone feels happy and no one feels pressured. Etc.

I am on window in every shift and Pay it forward cycles ruin the already hectic lines in dt. It’s tolerable on a January afternoon when only 10 people come and they only order one drink per car. It’s currently true a cherry on top of figuring out how to package 10 Uber eats Frappuccinos with ZERO carriers. I like moving around the $1 bill in the top jar. The longest was a 30-40 cars when I was being trained a few months back. I actually enjoy telling customers that I’m unwilling to do pay it forwards, my brain releases dopamine when I disappoint people.

It usually only lasts 2-4 cars either because it’s really confusing and the barista ends it or it gets messed up or because someone’s order behind them is like $20 and theirs was $4 so they skip it

I shut it down within the next transaction because:
1. it's stupid and generates confusion 2. the people behind you in line clearly have the money to come to a Starbucks anyway 3. someone with a tall coffee always winds up paying $30 for a car full of frappuccinos and pinkydrinkies \[edit: due to the guilt/social pressure of being "that person," which isn't fair to them\] 4. the tip jar remains empty 5. Starbucks is nonessential

I had one guy pay for every car in line up to the box. Idk why but he wanted to. It was super confusing trying to keep up with drinks and orders.

People have done this to me before. Or they’ll pay with a hundred and instead of getting change, they’ll ask to just pay for people until it runs out. I’m not going to lie; I usually pay for 1 or 2 and then put the rest in the tip jar.
