How do I quit tactfully while on Catastrophe Pay? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by q-a-z-x
I’ve been on catastrophe pay since mid March. At the time it was less expanded and I was able to get it due to being immunocompromised from asthma. I got a doctor’s note as proof.

I am very concerned about catching covid-19 while the hospitals are still overwhelmed bc of this condition. I want to reduce exposure as much as possible atm.

My SM texted me with some updates today, including a heads up that cat-pay ends in 2.5 weeks and asking if I had any questions about returning to work.

I worked at the bux for over a year now, and want to keep a good reference and retain the ability to get rehired.

Is it possible to leave on good terms while on cat-pay without seeming ungrateful?

You could possibly just take a leave of absence, but if you have to quit I’d at least do it over a call

you should be able to request to stay off the schedule for a while and use your sick/vacation time that you may have gotten... your reason is more than reasonable... even after that I would be willing to bet they'll let you stay as an employee but without pay until it's time to come back... let your manager know about your concerns about your immune system (i'd keep the quitting to yourself for now)

Honestly, I think if you just tell your manager exactly what you posted, they’ll understand and won’t give you a bad reference in the future. This is a weird and scary time, and I’ve noticed people are a lot more empathetic than usual.

Catastrophe pay is ending 5/3. Through the month of May you will be able to take a leave of absence (unpaid) and retain your benefits. Once May is over is when your SM should bring up whether you will stay with the company or not.

I say this just to let you know you don’t have to make this decision yet and there are options that wouldn’t immediately nullify your benefits (if you have insurance through work that is).

If you have made your decision and want to have this discussion prior to or on May 3rd then a phone call will definitely suffice — most every manager I know is aware that some people are now uncomfortable working service and it’s expected.

So is our job not guaranteed when returning from the LOA? Like the manager could decide to fire you?
ShogunDro 3 points 3y ago
Yes, your job is secured through the LOA. However once you have a return date you would have to go to work at that point. Not returning from a LOA is typically considered abandonment and will lead to separation.

We had a district wide conference call that stated taking a LOA would not be looked down on or jeopardize your job.

Thank you for the advice everyone! I’m going to be talking with my manager tomorrow about taking a LOA through May
