hi friends! question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by barista_anom
so i am so unsure of what i want to do with my life. i am about to graduate high school and have two very different plans. i want to either stay with starbucks and move up, or do psych. so different i know don’t judge i don’t have my life together lol. i just love both :( so, to be a store manager, do you need a degree in business? or should i use my ASU benefit and get a psych degree as back up in case i was like oh i don’t want to do this anymore. i would get both but i wouldn’t even be able to go to school without this benefit. please help! i hope you all are doing well :)

I would not suggest getting a BA degree in psych, as it does not lead to many opportunities on its own. You would need an advanced psych degree (MA, PhD) to really get anything out of it and it doesn't seem like you're positive that's the route you want to go down. If anything, maybe continue to work at Starbucks and major in business/minor in psych.

I was going to say the same thing. Unless you plan to pursue it further and get an advanced degree, a psych degree is essentially useless. One of my best friends got a psych degree and a few years later went back to school to become a nurse.

if i did get the BA in psych i would continue to go for the MD and eventually a PHD, i just wish i had 2 chances at life to work 2 jobs ya know. i just love both so much

I hear you. I'm a former 3-year partner and worked there through years 2-4 of my social science PhD program. I can only speak for my specific discipline but I personally LOVED working both jobs at the same time. My academic life and Starbucks life were so different that I didn't mind going from one to the other. Just be prepared for the amount of work an MD/PhD entails; the PhD itself is strenuous, and I can't imagine I would have been mentally prepared at the end of high school to do both (not that you can't be - it's just a lot!).

thank you for this! it is for sure a lot and i believe i can do it, psych is something ive always wanted to do so choices are tough but i think if i work there through ASU i will be satisfied. i love my team and i love psych so for sure it’s sad either way, but i think in the long run psych will be what makes me most successful and happy.

To be a store manager i don’t think you need a degree at all. I know several Sm’s was who are degree-less. But if you want to get a business one.

I definitely think you should get a degree. You can still work at Starbucks and go to school, and maybe a manager seems like a cool job but honestly it takes a lot of work to get there and it doesn’t pay that well compared to other jobs!. A degree allows you to have something to fall back on and if you have access to education you should definitely take advantage of that. Starbucks also does tuition reimbursement. You’re so young and you have so many opportunities, I would try school out first and if it doesn’t work out then maybe you can try out the manager part.

I agree, I just really love the whole atmosphere at work. i love the customers, my partners, moving around. i cant decide between a degree for business or psych. i’m going insane!

I have a degree in psych right now and only just started working at Starbucks.. lol. I have two degrees in psych actually and one in forensic science. What others are saying is true, though; in order to really work in your field you're going to need a higher degree or double major like I did. Still, working in Starbucks WHILE going to school would be the best option. I'm thinking of going back to school actually and transferring to other stores because I don't want to lose this job, you know?

yeah i would for sure want to go get a higher education but ill start with my degree and see what happens then haha, thank you :)

I wish you the best! I think you could still plausibly work your way up even when you're in college.....

You don’t need any degree to be a manager, my manager went through the ASU program after a few years of being a manager!

I would personally get the degree is psych though
