ALL NYC STARBUCKS! Governor Cuomo extended Shutdown (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
OK, So as most of you know we have catastrophe pay till May 3rd (After that, we all have to go back to our district / stores to WORK) But seeing as Governor Cuomo extended the COV-19 Shutdown till May 15 (Yikes!) My biggest question is will our catastrophe pay be extended till May 14?

So my understanding is that our NYC and NY State locations are allowed to operate drive thru, delivery, and take out under the shutdown. Our store closures were basically us taking action over what was legally required. May 4th we simply are no longer having the universal choice of Cat pay where shifts are available for you to work. In other words, if there is a store you can get to that is opening again, and you are healthy, and have nothing that would prevent you returning (like you have a small child with no daycare or school, or if you are immune compromised for example) then you gotta work, use time, or take a LOA... by working, you would now get the extra $3/hr through May at least... hope that helps.

If you have any of these issues they are extending cat pay or you can just take a LOA? Does pregnancy count?

Cat pay will be extended to partners affected by shutdowns until the end of May. After that point, if your store opens again, you'll still receive hazard pay until the end of the month.

However, if your store can open and you refuse to return to work, you'll be able to use up your PTO or potentially get a paid leave, otherwise, like Rossann said in her letter, you'll be making the decision to leave Starbucks. The biggest exceptions to this are if you have a valid reason to not return to work (You're a caregiver, are a parents of homeschooled kids, etc.) in which case you'll need to work with your SM and PCC to make sure you're in the clear.

Edit: Added stuff for clarity

There’s truth to what you’re saying but the understanding I think has been misinterpreted. No one is getting separated, cat pay for most ends on May 3rd, opportunities to work are opening up, partners can use vacation or take an LOA if they’re not ready. Partners who come back are still earning service pay until the end of May. Unless something changes which always could happen in unprecedented times.

I’m sorry for the confusion. I was specifically referencing this bit from Rossann’s letter:

“And there will be some partners who just aren’t ready to return to a service role. So, we must show our genuine empathy for those who need to make the personal decision to leave Starbucks.”

Y’all are both right — the option to take an unpaid leave of absence through the end of May is available to partners who are still just uncomfortable coming to work. They’ll retain their benefits in the meantime. At that point the leave of absence will have been completed to term and if a partner does not return from a leave of absence it is considered job abandonment and you will be separated.

Edit: also yes sick and vacation time will be able to be used in the meantime as well

Hey guys! So I live in the New York region and my SM wants to open up our store. I get that we can take LOA but the fact is that almost all my coworkers don’t want to work due to the fact we are in a high risk area and work near an urgent care, 3 hospitals, and a clinic. I love to work and have volunteered to work at other stores before I had to self quarantine due to the fact I might have come in contact with someone but my SM right now doesn’t see that we as a team do not want to open our location not because we are lazy but because honestly we are not only worried for our health but for our families. We have all messaged our concerns to her but any other ideas are accepted.
