Excerpt from Rossann’s 4/16 letter : what a difference just 35 days makes during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sassy7girl
“And there will be Some partners who just aren’t ready to return to a service role.

So, we must show our genuine empathy for those who need to make the personal decision to LEAVE Starbucks. We will always be grateful for their service to our company & we will support them the best way we can As they make the personal decision to CARE for THEMSELVES.

We know this is an unprecedented time & we want every partner to know you Have options when it comes to doing what is best for you.

Whatever you choose I want you to know that your Sbux family stands with you today & always. We will always have your back.

——
in just over 30 days, we went to the above, from this (below) Excerpt from March 11:— just as MOST STATES WILL BE APPROACHING THEIR PEAKS—

nothing has changed —if anything —we’re looking at the approach of an oncoming train.

“At Starbucks, you should NEVER have to choose between WORK & taking CARE of yourself. You have our full support when it comes to partner care, including access to catastrophe pay, benefits that support your physical and mental health, as well as a network of partners who are all here to help.

We quickly went from TRUE care & support, (which I am very grateful for- ) to what reads between the lines as -

we can’t even afford the 2 billion in stock buybacks now that our bottom line is in jeopardy (poor shareholders) and btw- don’t let the door hit you on your way out— we’re opening/ whether it’s SAFE OR NOT!

Options are limited: use your earned time- take 30 days unpaid & then QUIT if it’s still unsafe!

Am I reading this correctly??????

Not really sure what you guys expected. They only even offered catastrophe pay at first because of the PR mess.

I said it before but they should have 100% given an option to lay off/furlough(this still gives you ability to come back and have a job) to all partners.

I get that not everyone would take it but when unemployment is paying at a rate of nearly $20-25 hr x40 hours a week ($600 is guaranteed from government + 60-70% of your current wages, which takes the highest quarter of the last year) then you have to realize that a lot of partners would be 100000x better off taking the possibility. This is exactly why other companies laid off their workers and I don’t get why people got mad at those companies.

Furthermore, if they offered a furloughed it’d still guarantee your job and still allow unemployment. At the end of the day Starbucks KNOWS that too many people would take that option and they’d lose money which is why its not offered and probably won’t ever be offered based on them cutting off catastrophe pay(which they used Feb as an average ... why? Feb is always a slow month in retail...out of the past 9 months, my absolutely lowest average was Feb with paychecks of $100... when I usually average 500-600 and 700-800 in holiday months)

For everyone saying unemployment is taking too long in some states... you do realize theres backpay to when you filed right...?

Starbucks doesn’t care about you guys, I don’t know why r/starbucks or r/starbucksbaristas defend the company like they’re paid to do so. Don’t get me wrong Starbucks DOES offer a lot of options versus other minimum wage but it’s all a PR stunt.

It's like not even just about this job....this job overworks everyone, pays very little, and sadly this isnt the only priority in peoples life. 5 dollar frapps arent worth someones life/personal life or risk. That being said the statements this company makes are insanely insensitive/rude and just downright innappropriate. They need a better PR team bc its apparent to me that they never wanted to give us cat pay in the first place but did it to alleviate pressure off of themselves and appear the heroes in the general public. Its not even about the work or going to work, I'm greatful i have a job but i have other people in my life to consider that i live around/health issues, its not just about starbucks. Many people are a 2 in come household and are stuck not only taking care of their kids out of school but also are struggling to pick up the slack for loss of income, People are struggling everywhere this job isnt the end all be all and the way they've portrayed themselves is just downright disgusting to me
Anakalia27 6 points 3y ago
I agree with everything. Them saying risk this or quit is unbelievable to me lol who the hell makes up these pr statements. They show no empathy for anyone or what they're going through
sassy7girl [OP] 5 points 3y ago
Right! Sounds great.

Except back to that- ‘not enough peeps to run stores’ so goodbye ‘record Quarterly earnings’ which we’ve never seen enough of!

We basically need another one of those ‘PR messes!’

As a side note you might want to click reply to our posts so it doesn’t look like you’re talking to yourself.

But yeah, a lot of people aren’t understanding Starbucks 100% has the capability of guaranteeing our jobs and a decent pay whether that’s expanded CAT pay or allowing us on a furlough LoA. It’s making me so sad to realize that people think that Starbucks is doing the best for us right now when it’s not.

Oops- ur so right/ sorry long day!

And yes agreed w that too.
Thegreatithy 4 points 3y ago
If they lay off employees they don't need to rehire them necessarily. The wording messes with unemployment eligibility and that isn't right.
BayAreaSBux 8 points 3y ago
Which is why a furlough is better. It is an employer mandated leave of absence. It protects your health insurance and allows you to file for unemployment.

They are allowing us to take a VOLUNTARY LoA but that doesn’t allow unemployment claims. They’re protecting our jobs for that so why can’t they offer furloughs so we can actually get paid a decent amount instead of worrying about getting permanent damage from coronavirus or getting money to live.

Agreed!

I’ve heard that if it’s due to covid- employers aren’t even being held liable in the same way as usual for unemployment claims— is that true?

And if so- Starbucks should DEFINITELY furlough or lay off — the key would Be to maintain health benefits as well.

Then you have a built in work force ready to roll when it’s really safe to come back.

Also- a lot of Peeps on both threads are expressing major concerns & fears with how it’s being handled- those that aren’t, are perhaps just not fully aware of what a dire situation we are in.

( & when I said ‘am I reading this correctly- I should’ve said ‘sarcasm’) as - That’s definitely the message!

(I also know a partner or two who HAVE applied for unemployment due to reduced hours thru cat pay and have been approved) whether that’ll prove valid in the end remains to be seen— although governors have said employers can’t retaliate for someone filing a claim, Again, who knows?

Agreed if they furloughed or laid off/ too many partners would take it & revenue would be lost as stores would have to stay closed for lack of staffing. Hence why they aren’t doing it.

And using just February rather than a yearly average for cat pay was indeed unfair.

Thanks for your perspective!

I haven’t looked too much into the employer side of the CARES act but that might only apply to smaller businesses not Starbucks who brings a net INCOME of ~4B per year.

As such I highly doubt Starbucks would get a pass on unemployment insurance rising(it rises for each employee that applies/gets accepted) because they essentially have the capability to pay everyone for at least a few months... heck their stock buyback would have been enough to cover every single employee at 40 hours a week for around 10 weeks... if they so choose to invest in their partners which would have been the best PR stunt and made Starbucks a super popular company which is why that’s not happening. Amazing how just a few weeks ago they were defending their stock buyback, and now they can’t seem to find the money to pay employees during this pandemic even after all these studies showing permanent damage even for asymptotic patients.

I had to take catastrophe pay because I got infected with COVID and today after two weeks of no symptoms, I started to feel sick again. The virus apparently comes in waves and people can be contagious for up to 2-3 months after contracting it. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if rather than being put on a leave of absence, I was just asked to quit, since I don’t want to go to work until I’m absolutely sure I can no longer give anyone the virus.

So sorry to you are going through this & on top of it not having ‘job certainty’

Not only should you be eligible for the extended cat pay thru May 31st (def. for even those exposed or been in contact w/it so if you HAVE it- for sure you’d be)

Also In Rosann’s original letter- (refer to hub) dated 3/11/20:

“Any partner who has been diagnosed with or exposed to Covid 19, or comes in close prolonged contact w/someone in their store or household who has.... etc etc.... at the end of 14 days- if partners are still unable to return to work, additional pay replacement MAY be made up to 26 weeks.”

It does mention use of sick & vacay time/ personal time off/ I would just get some clarification of what you are exactly entitled to before throwing in the towel.

You are doing the RESPONSIBLE thing by not wanting to infect your fellow partners & customers & I commend you.

Wishing you a truly speedy & full-fledged recovery.

Be safe & well.

Yo my parents are still testing positive 35 days after first symptoms, stay on top of those symptoms! The quarantine recommendations are severely inadequate, especially considering my parents only got tested (every seven days) due to ongoing oncology treatments. Before they got tested, their doctor told them they were fit to go out in public after 3 days of no symptoms—three weeks ago. This is for everyone: stay isolated from your friends and family even after returning to work! It’s going to feel like life can go back to normal, but then more than ever you are possibly a carrier bringing the virus to your loved ones. I’ve seen this up close and you do not want to watch your loved ones go through it.

Thanks for the excellent advice & info- best wishes for your parents’ recovery. We need to be our own best advocates.

I initially figured that if they did the 2 billion in buy backs- ( which they are now not) it would be a cash pay out of just over $ 8,000 per partner.
