Manager asking why I’m concerned about coming back May 4th(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by forkinjolly
I’m concerned that going back so soon in the midst of this pandemic will negate all the social distancing and quarantining that I just took part in since mid March. How is returning to non essential work a good idea right now? Cases have surpassed 700,000 in the US (that we know of) and deaths were almost at 30,000 just yesterday. And this has all happened while people have been social distancing. I just can’t see how there’s not going to be a spike in cases as we reopen the economy. Am I wrong to feel concerned? My manager sure is making me feel that way.

I’m almost certain they’re all trained to pretend to not be concerned...unfortunately they gotta get that bag just like we do 🙃 But I’m with you, this is very concerning
NOTcreative--17 points3y ago
We’re not trained to be concerned. But we do have a strong faith in the measures we’re taking to keep our partners safe. We’re definitely more safe than anywhere else open for business. All the things we have been learning and been implementing have always been several steps ahead of CDC recommendations and government mandate. To date not a single partner has reported contracting the virus at work. The length we go to to ensure no partner has had a chance of coming into contact at work or spreading covid at work after possible exposure is immense.
Starbucks has direct contact with CDC, governors, and a team of epidemiologists giving suggestions on how to keep partners safe. A partner gets a slight fever on their second of two days off? Every single partner that came into contact with them 48 hours before the last time they were at the store is isolated for two weeks and a hazmat team comes in to disinfect. You’re still getting groceries, food, going to gas stations or having stuff delivered to you. All those things are much more high risk than coming into work.
nobullshitplz3 points3y ago
When you say nobody has come in contact at work, do you mean at your store specifically or Starbucks as a whole? If you mean yours specifically that’s one thing, but there have definitely been Starbucks partners who have gotten it
NOTcreative--2 points3y ago
I never implied not a single partner has been diagnosed with covid-19, that would be untrue, too many people and partners have gotten it. I do reaffirm that no Starbucks partner has contracted it while working. Starbucks has been extremely vigilant in ensuring partner safety. Every level up you go the more cautious they are.

Ok. Just wanted to double check what you meant. The way it was written, could’ve been interpreted a couple different ways.

Several have don’t spread lies

Proof?
rollerbladeshoes2 points3y ago
Could a corporate shill be more obvious if they tried, I wonder
NOTcreative--2 points3y ago
It’s easy for logic and reason to fall to cynicism and acceptance of status quo.

I can tell you’re a manager. Grow some class solidarity, loser

So what is not being communicated across the board is that social distancing to flatten the curve isn’t attempting to lower the number of overall cases. It’s attempting to spread them out over time so that hospitals aren’t overwhelmed and turning people away or letting people die, which we saw happen in Italy. The best we can hope for is the same number of cases over a longer period of time, and as a result we will have fewer deaths. Experts have predicted that there will be multiple waves where we will have to shelter and then “reopen” multiple times before we have a vaccine in 18 months. It’s obviously going to be impossible to shelter in place 100% until that point, so this is the best solution they have come up with. I don’t know what future social distancing efforts will look like, or how many we will have, but that’s probably going to be the best way to handle the situation.
Edit to add: I’m also convinced that the current stay in place orders will be extended for people who already have them. There’s no way anyone in the US is going back to work at the beginning of May. I think local and state governments are holding off on announcements until the last minute to see what happens.
sassy7girl34 points3y ago
We are reopening stores when nothing has changed since March/ except that we are ( most states other than WA & NY, ) now heading toward peak #’s & use of hospital resources, from mid to late May. It’s more important than ever to continue social distancing & ‘stay home stay healthy’ sheltering. More risky, not less.
forkinjolly [OP]9 points3y ago
I agree. So will you not be going back in the beginning of May?
sacredgoodbyes17 points3y ago
take the leave if you can. its un-paid, but its better to go back in 30 days than now. at least in my opinion. I am super uncomfortable about returning now, too
cs_phoenix3 points3y ago
What leave?
Hermione1171 points3y ago
what leave? i already took 30 days cat pay?
sacredgoodbyes11 points3y ago
The unpaid leave. I called partner resources and was told I can take an unpaid leave
Toto16222 points3y ago
Did you call Partner Resources or Sedgwig?
sacredgoodbyes2 points3y ago
Parter resources. They told me my option was vacation time (which I don’t have) or unpaid leave. They told me to contact sedgwig

May the 4th be with you.

At least you don’t work in a shitty grocery store kiosk we never closed 🙃
forkinjolly [OP]3 points3y ago
Is cat pay an option for you? Bless you!!
Zeldaluvr20077 points3y ago
If it's anything like my airport 'Bux, we only got 2 weeks paid leave if, and only if, we got the virus. I've been on unpaid furlough for over a month now. 😭
forkinjolly [OP]3 points3y ago
Shame on your airport store 😓
Zeldaluvr20073 points3y ago
Yes! But they aren't contesting unemployment so there's that. /s
TinyTinasRabidOtter2 points3y ago
Cat pay hasn’t been offered as an option for at least my grocery store. Since we are employees of the grocery store itself. Even if we close we are expected to just pick up hours in other departments. Or no pay. It’s a little scary honestly.
lipstick-lemondrop1 points3y ago
I go back to mine in 2 weeks and kiosk closes 7 hours early, but they’re putting us to work in other departments iirc. I’m just grateful we’re getting PPE and hazard pay :/

I work at a Starbucks in Canada in a mall location. We will be one of the last stores to reopen. But what upsets me the most is the US is in a worse state than we are and for some reason you guys are reopening stores. Our cat pay was extended til June 14 and they've only got 2 stores in town open. I think as Starbucks employees, regardless of the country, you should have the same options that we have.
forkinjolly [OP]3 points3y ago
I’m so glad you and partners in Canada have pay that far ahead. And I’m glad you shared this. Thank you!
mxs42351 points3y ago
This is a reflection of how our governments have allocated funding. Companies in Canada are receiving 75% of wages for employees and so they only have to foot the rest. This is to help alleviate the number of EI claims and to help companies retain their employees on pay roll.
Additionally, we have the CERB which has now been extended to cover those who make up to 1k/month. Things are changing daily and we’re already seeing a downward trend in our numbers.
Yes, Starbucks is a global company but they can only do so much in regards to what the overall country is doing and even more specifically certain states.
Spacerelic625 points3y ago
I won’t feel comfortable until there’s widespread testing.
forkinjolly [OP]1 points3y ago
Understandable!

New York City?? I can’t believe they’re expecting you to go back...I’m sorry. Be safe my friend
rosallia1 points3y ago
Honestly I'm sorry for everyone else that could literally die from this. Thank you for the well wished though, lets see how starbucks employees going back to work plays out
Edit: Yes, the city
gaayrat2 points3y ago
I told my manager I'm coming back but I'm second guessing my decision daily. I need the money though & I'm hoping I can work enough that between that & the stimulus money I might be able to take a leave of absence June/July. I'm starting grad school in August and won't be working anyway so I really just need to make it through summer
forkinjolly [OP]2 points3y ago
Darn, that’s tough. Be super safe, wishing you well.
gaayrat1 points3y ago
Thanks, I appreciate it!
violodolo-23 points3y ago
Yeah also Starbucks isn’t a non-essential. We sell food
hotheadedbarista32 points3y ago
There’s grocery stores. Starbucks is NON-ESSENTIAL. People can make their own coffee, and prepare their own food. People do not NEED a stupid feta spinach wrap and/or a vanilla bean Frappuccino. The only places that should be open right now are grocery stores, gas stations, hospitals (obviously) and banks. that’s it.
