Leave of absense vs. unemployment? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by JustForBrowsing
So catastrophe pay ends May 3. My manager told me I can return to work after that or I need to take a leave of absense for 30 days. How does this affect unemployment? I don't feel safe right now around customers as well as having to take the bus to work. Are they going to make it nearly impossible to actually collect unemployment by trying to say I quit on my own?

You can’t collect unemployment while on LoA sadly because you aren’t technically unemployed :(

And they're not really giving any other options :/

Have to tried broaching the subject of being let go and returning after with your manager? They might be able to help, I’m not sure on that it will probably depend on what your manager is like.

If you leave the company you aren't eligible for rehire for a certain period of time. I think it's six months, not 100%.

Seriously?! God damn that’s brutal D:

I'll try but they're pretty unhelpful tbh

I’m really sorry to hear that. I know I’m going back to work after only a week off because I feel like I’d be judged for taking the rest of the time. I start back Wednesday and I’ve already had work nightmares the last two nights.

Apply for unemployment. The guidelines have been expanded and definitely includes those who are furloughed. $1

Definitely check with SM. I called partner resources and they said the May 31 is for people who have children who can’t access healthcare, people who have contracted Covid, and a couple other specific circumstances. May 3 deadline of Cat pay is for everyone staying at home because of emotional reasons, don’t feel safe, that sort of thing

Catastrophe pay ends May 17th in Canada (well, in Ontario at least), thrte was another extension. Your SM should've informed you. My SM didn't inform me either; I have to get my info from partners from many different locations. You have more time.

where did you get this information??

A printed and posted message in a group chat. Search on the partner hub "Message from Lori Digulla: Partner care at our core as we work through COVID-19". Perhaps it'll be there
