Okay so I think we can all agree that the extra $3 an hour if you are making the choice to work during this pandemic, is obviously super clutch. But I just wonder .. if the company is able to supply this pay now, why can they not continue this form of pay even after the chaos is over? Maybe a sista is just dreamin’. hope no one takes offense to this, I’m still ever so grateful for the 13.02$ an hr. Much love to all my partners & fellow beansSs♥️ ☕️ stay hydrated, healthy, & happy! Xo
AdamAce385 points3y ago
They won’t because corporate love their bonuses
hopelovepeace332 points3y ago
Exactly! They make money off the backs of us to reward people who sit in offices all day taking phone calls. I’d like to see how well they do if they were down in the stores dealing with these customers that come through, talk about bite your tongue.
HollowRibcage77 points3y ago
16 in your store? Ha...yeh no. Uh here I normally make 9, 12 with the 3$ extra.
AdamAce365 points3y ago
Don’t compare pays because it real depends on the cost of living. I live in la, but my rent is 2400 a month and I get payed 15.02. Tg for roommates
faebaes42 points3y ago
It doesn’t depend on cost of living, it depends on state. When I was in the middle of nowhere, WA, I made $13.50 but I’m in a much bigger city now with a much higher cost of living and make $9. They’re happy to pay us as little as they can get away with.
hopelovepeace335 points3y ago
You make less living within the city? That doesn’t make sense, you should be making more than just $9 an hour living in a city.
faebaes2 points3y ago
Minimum wage here is much lower, so I get paid a lot less even though the cost of living is much higher. I agree, I should be making more. But I’m not.
hopelovepeace334 points3y ago
Also pay goes by state guidelines & how they do minimum wage.
cvithlani1 points3y ago
It depends on the minimum wage in your county, plus a specific % increase per county for cost of living.
HollowRibcage18 points3y ago
It’s not a matter of comparing pays, I’m fully aware of what influences minimum wage/hourly pay in your area. Over here it’s different though, our state’s minimum hasn’t been raised in ages, I’m grateful for Starbucks because over here our minimum is still 7.25$ and you can work your literal tail off and still not have enough to pay rent unless you have two jobs.. the idea of 16$ an hour is a literal dream.
Edit: I’m grateful for even the 9$ an hour because it’s really rare and unlikely to find a job out here that pays that much over minimum.
czjab8kedp20 points3y ago
Damn no offense but I would not work a job as hard and physically exhausting as starbucks for 9 dollars and hour. This job needs to be minimum 15 an hour everywhere.
drinkliquidclocks6 points3y ago
I was thrilled to start at 9.50, maybe you don't understand how common this pay is in some states. I job searched for months and months unemployed and this was the highest paying job I found that I could qualify for. I also don't consider it difficult labor though. My job is cheese.
caetness1 points3y ago
Neither would we.....but a job is a job
NOTcreative-2 points3y ago
Pretty sure their base hourly is $10.02 an hour which is why they are grateful for the $13.02. Probably hired at $9.50 with a raise or two. Potentially a shift that started as barista at $7.xx with a two dollar raise and annual raises.
GymLeaderFlame1 points3y ago
I am a new shift in Florida and my starting was 11.16
okeekee1 points3y ago
I feel your pain. I was hired as a barista and I started at 9.20 an hour. With the “raise” my base is 9.48.
0x52and1x520 points3y ago
Nah probs $16 I live in Cali and I make $13.02 base but with the $3 raise it’s $16.02.
hergreatdepression39 points3y ago
Cuz corporate don’t actually care about us and see us as super disposable. All the care about is when the media is taking names of what companies are being but heads they don’t want their name on that list. There is no way when things get better will we still be with that pay
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr7 points3y ago
Exactly.
I mean, I *am* grateful that we were given these options because my husband is considered to be extremely high risk, so before there was even any talk at all (other than from fellow partners) of compensation, I was preparing myself to take a leave of absence - if they *allowed* me one, that is. Otherwise, I was also preparing myself to walk away becaus the risk for us personally was (and still is) WAY too fucking high.
That all being said though, corporate *for sure* only gave us these options because the partners were breathing down their necks so heavily (and rightfully), so they really didn't have a choice in the matter. In order for them to keep up their facade of being the "world's greatest employer", they had to oblige.
So you are absolutely right that in actuality, the CAT pay benefits them far more than it benefits us.
hergreatdepression2 points3y ago
I almost wanna put my butt on the line and call a news team to report this bs of “approving leaves” like bro I called Sedgwick today to get the leave like my manager said and before I finished talking they said you gotta go get approved by the PRC and then they were confused on why I was transferred because I am obviously approved if I had finished my sentence. So as the transferred me over again the line drops of course and then I call again and they answer and I end up getting transferred 3 times again and I finally got my leave... BUT APPARENTLY YOU ONLY GET ONE FOR 30 DAYS AND ONLY ONCE EVERY 3 YEARS?!?! WHAT BS?!? We all know this shit ain’t gonna be over by June 2nd... so basically I get my benefits for insurance until June 2 and after I’m filing for unemployment. I am not high risk but I get sick constantly and very easily. I have had write ups because of how easily I get sick and my aunt has it and I almost wanna lie and say yea I saw her recently so that maybe they will extend cat pay to me. I don’t think my manager realizes she’s going to loose a few partners and honestly I don’t care anymore. Do y’all know if we ever signed anything saying we can’t go to the news about how awful we are actually treated if I can dig up some evidence?
helgathehorriblez2 points3y ago
Your best bet would be to go out on FMLA. That requires a doctors note. If you do in fact get sick frequently, the doctor would be able to imply you being immune compromised and explain the risk is very high. FMLA would give you 26 weeks a year and not 30 days/3 years (I’ve honestly never heard of that- maybe it’s state dependent) federally however, you have FMLA to fall back on should you need that.
hergreatdepression1 points3y ago
Maybe I should call my doctor! I had mono 7 years ago and I think someone at the time said my immune system would suck but idk if they meant compromised. It was a pediatrician and I was out of it so I can’t remember clearly... I’ll call and see if I can do something!
cuseisalive-1 points3y ago
People are died, 20 plus million forced on unemployment, economy in a downward spiral, I don’t think anyone outside of privileged barista will think your being “treated awful”. Hope the grass is greener
hergreatdepression5 points3y ago
Yes a lot of people are dead, and Starbucks is not doing anything to help those at risk stay home. To stay safe. And to not get sick. Yet they are putting our statements saying they care about our families and our safety the same day they are opening lobby stores and extending hours even tho the death totals and positive tests are very high in my area. 138 cases in my city alone. I hope the grass does turn greener. And I hope when this is all over we change our ways so this never happens again. I hope everyone becomes more prepared. Because I don’t know how I can have health insurance to pay for my medications, that I get through Starbucks, and will be on unemployment. And if a company that has everyone tricked is able to be exposed before things get worse, it can only mean good. I’m able to get off meds with time, but so many are not. And I know a lot of people are in similar situations. And I wish them luck, and if I see what is happening in my company I worry about what happing in others. Ones that are not into sharing nearly everything. I’m worried for those who can’t risk their jobs who are still working because they need the money, they need the benefits. So yes if you say 20 million are out of jobs then that doesn’t mean that a company can suddenly treat their employees like trash, this is not the only time they do but I should be thankful to have a job at all. However when my manager called to see when I was coming back and I said that my aunt had it she said are you sick then? Cuz you can’t come in if your sick.” Paraphrasing. Starbucks says they care but then look at you expecting you to go above and beyond every minute and put you and your family at risk for minim wage... then they raised it by 3 dollars. They ask to much of an employee who on a basis to get paid minimum wage... so I am sorry for not wanting to be one of those who have or will pass from the virus, I don’t want to be the one who passes it on to someone who will pass it on. But it seems like Starbucks doesn’t see it that way and they haven’t. They give you the legal sick hours and if you go over it you get a write up, the environment is not food safe and it almost encourages you to come to work sick, which many baristas have and probably still do. I really hope after this things will change with sick hours to encourage people to stay home when they are sick and not go to work in fear of loosing their job. Food service is essential today, we are careful of not getting sick today, why don’t we get extensive sick hours so we don’t spread illness at work? Sorry for the rant but I am truly disappointed in how my company has taken action in these hard times. And yes I am great full to be able to have a pay check for the next week, however their intentions are not for people’s safety and it feels it hasn’t been for a while.
EXHAUSTEDBARISTA6912 points3y ago
We need to unionize right the fuck now. We have more leverage than ever. You want to stop living off of starvation wages? Let's organize.
sillypuddydirtymuddy [OP]4 points3y ago
Agreeed ! How do we begin though
EXHAUSTEDBARISTA693 points3y ago
i'll dm you
0x52and1x52-5 points3y ago
I’m going to be honest, Starbucks doesn’t deserve to be unioned if they keep treating us like this. I’m pretty proud of our employer even if it’s good PR, it legitimately helps us a ton.
Jezi_Belle_11 points3y ago
Unionizing is not a punishment for bad companies! ALL employees can benefit from a union -- it simply gets them a single voice at the negotiating table.
For a good company, a union isn't a threat because it lets them know their employees' needs and concerns. It's only a threat if you were planning to screw them over and are worried you won't be able to anymore.
helgathehorriblez1 points3y ago
That’s not necessarily true. I worked under a union before. It was horrible. ESPECIALLY if you don’t agree with the union. It becomes a political game that’s even more unpleasant than dealing with corporate directly.
EXHAUSTEDBARISTA69-1 points3y ago
then don't join the union. we're going to unionize. next!
EXHAUSTEDBARISTA69-1 points3y ago
sorry, but we're sick and tired of working our asses off and doing the jobs of 2 or 3 people and only getting the bare minimum in compensation for our labor. if we're so "essential", we're going to start getting paid essential wages, or starbucks can have fun replacing the majority of their workforce. we're sick of it.
0x52and1x521 points3y ago
Keep in mind we’re in the service industry. Other service workers put up with the same things we do but we’re treated 1000x better.
EXHAUSTEDBARISTA691 points3y ago
they should unionize too! :)
grunkle_spooky12 points3y ago
See this is the shit that they get us with though. They call us partners. We own shares. We should have a say in how we get paid, right? Nah, that doesn't hit their warm and fuzzies as much as handing us an extra 3 dollars every once in a while to fuck off.
grunkle_spooky10 points3y ago
Makes you wonder how much we could all get done if we all banded together and threatened to sell at the same time. I don't know much about stocks, but that seems big.
Saoirse_Says1 points3y ago
It's not, actually.
NOTcreative-6 points3y ago
OP, the truth is Starbucks has been analyzing and as far as labor it’s supply and demand. They supply way more benefits than other companies paying the same or less than them. But as they lose potential recruits due to pay, they look at readjusting. For the extra $3/hr and paying partners on cat pay their normal wages they have diverted all revenues to taking care of partners. Many calls to facility aren’t being invested into, all stores are losing profit but the profit they make they spend on partners. So halting plans for expansion and store remodels are diverting those funds to partners. They’re not concerned about growth but taking care of their people. Yes there are long term benefits to this business strategy but it’s a win for everyone.
cloudsgone9 points3y ago
Where'd you get this information? Lol. Starbucks is NOT in the red right now, even with the closures and cat/service pay.
If they're concerned about taking care of their people, why are they ending cat pay at the end of May, when the pandemic is predicted to come to a peak in many of the states with the most stores?
Rosann has stated our options are use out sick/vacation ours then take an unpaid LOA, or quit... which would make us ineligible for unemployment.
Maybe... maybe our company is... not so good?
ReEliseYT5 points3y ago
This is what we should be demanding. They can’t make any money with out us baristas. It’s time to unionize!
brooklynjohnston3 points3y ago
I live in Alberta, Canada rent here is typically around $1200 for a decent 1-2 bedroom apartment how come we make $15/hour now $18/hour but in the states you’re rent is so much more but you make less?? How do you even afford that? How is that even fair? I can’t even believe how over worked you guys must be at least the benefits are there for massages and stuff but wow good on you guys for doing that.
drubhub2 points3y ago
Man I wish we could keep the extra pay going. I make $11 usually and the $14 is really nice. I can’t believe people only earn $9 an hour here. That’s unbelievable! I also live in a very affordable place
pengu1nhugs2 points3y ago
They don't have to if there's a minimum wage. Only saving grace is if that goes up
cvithlani1 points3y ago
Starbucks is taking a LOSS paying you a premium rate, plus paying cat pay to people that can't work. Be grateful that you work for a company that puts partner care above profits. They could have easily cut pay or laid off employees, but they didn't.
sillypuddydirtymuddy [OP]0 points3y ago
I did say I am grateful!
vellamour1 points3y ago
I agree that they should rethink their normal wages, butI think it’s funny that people opt’d for the extra $3 in my district. First of all, our store got shut down and only two stores in the district are open. So they funnel everyone working to those two stores. Better hope you’re funneled to a store close to home because the extra $30 you’re making on your 10hr/week is basically going to just gas money. I’m sure it’s beneficial to places with more population density, but where I am, staying home was way the better option.
royalsara31 points3y ago
I fell bad, I’m making 17 an hour in Ontario Canada, I mean I guess the exchange is different but it still feels like a lot🤔
mxs42351 points3y ago
Yeah minimum wage is $14 in Ontario. I started two years ago at 14. I’m now at $14.62 I think? With the incentive pay, it would be close to $18. My store has been closed and there are only like four DT opened in my city. I, unfortunately, live on the Quebec side and they’re patrolling bridges for unnecessary travel so I’m just staying home til my store reopens and we get our letters about having to work.
I’m super grateful though. Not a lot of companies have paid their employees to isolate for, what will be, nearly two months.

It's a huge help to anyone feeling comfortable to work, but the pay is coming from a "disaster fund" corporate uses in situations like these. It takes a while for corporate to decide on the bonus since they have to estimate how many people are leaving.
Unfortunately, the pay can't reasonably stick around. Sure the bux has proven they can afford it now but over time these phat wages become costly. Stores will have smaller rosters and the quality of equipment and food resources will decline. A bunch of partners will have to be laid off and a high turnover would be encouraged.
At the end of the day, this extra pay is here to support all of us hard working partners willing to continue serving coffee to the stressed individuals in our communities, but it will have a far more negative impact if it stays.
Wishing all my partners a safe and healthy few months!
