Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Just offered an amazing Job Opportunity, but have to start ASAP. How do I handle this in the best way? (self.starbucksbaristas)

So, I was just told tonight that I've been hired at a job that is 5 minutes from my house, pays more, stable hours, room for advancement, etc. I'd easily save $100 in gas per month, at least $600 in car maintenance , and have more time because right now I'm half an hour on a good day from my store. I'd also qualify for a healthcare subsidy so my insurance would be comparable to what I have at the Bux.

Here is my conundrum..My store is set to open back up on May 7th. I really wanted to give my manager 2 weeks notice, but these guys need this position filled ASAP, and I don't want to lose out on this at all. This is the field I've wanted for such a long time, and this position is perfect for me strengths wise and personality wise.

\#1 If I give less than 2 weeks notice and I'm on the schedule, does this make me unhireable? I would try to find someone to cover my shifts.

\#2 I'd love to KEEP Starbucks at least one or two nights a week, but that would require me to step down + I highly doubt my manager would go for it. SM is VERY strict about scheduling. If I was separated, could I come back at a later time within 3 months and be OK? technically my home location is an entirely different district.

Talk/call them right now or before the end of tomorrow.

Technically a 2 weeks notice would put you just before you guys reopen. Assuming your manager isn’t an a-hole they should work with you and be happy for you. Right now I’m sure it’ll be super easy for your third week shifts to be given out as May 4th is when a ton of baristas will be returning.

Rehireable is something you have to talk about your SM with. I’m sure salty ones would put you down as un rehireable but what can you do about that besides keep note of everything happening and go to PRC/Your next manager.

I’m sure your manager can work with you for the once/twice a week. I had two shifts step down and usually only work twice a week at most. However do note that your SM will probably be giving a lot of hours to other baristas and sometimes you may only work 4 hours a week.

But congrats! If that job is something you’re passionate about(which it looks like) I’d say don’t stress too much about what happens at Starbucks, there’s tons of replacements for it in the worst case scenario.

I'm mostly worried because I truly love this SM, but I don't want to let this opportunity go to waste either. I'd love to keep my eligibility for rehire though if my SM doesn't want to work with my schedule (which is fine; if I don't get alot of hours I'm totally ok with that, mainly don't wanna burn the bridges)

If the job you just got needs you to start ASAP, don’t think about it twice. Give your two weeks notice immediately, don’t lose the opportunity because you feel you have to finish your shifts once your store reopens. I had a partner tell a really good job offer that he still HAD to give his two weeks first and then get back to them once he had.

Guess what happened next? He calls the next day to tell them he would take the job but they told him since he hesitated, they offered the position to someone else. He cried, a grown man was crying because he had his dream job offered to him and he lost the opportunity because he was too worried about parting on good terms with Starbucks. Later they offered him another position but for something entirely different and of course, less pay and less benefits. He was told he could ‘work his way up’ to the job he had just been offered the day before, imagine that? Good luck!

2 weeks notice is courtesy, but not a requirement. It helps keep you on good terms for getting a reference or maybe rehired later on. You doing some work to get your shifts covered and make it easier to fill that gap and give as much notice as possible makes that smoother.

Most SMs would be ok with keeping you on part time, at least until they have a change to hire and train a replacement. But things are weird right now, and they might prefer to give those hours to other partners if they're cutting back on hours and labor because of the pandemic.

I would be ok with those hours going to those who need them; I'm not greedy about it, just want to keep my good reference with him. We do have one person who was just promoted as a shift supervisor already, and another who wants to step up and become a shift as well.

By me switching to one or two nights, I'd actually be able to help out more because the night crew isn't strong at this store.
