Looking for guidance (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mevselvisvsmaradonna
Hey guys! I hope all of you guys are staying safe and healthy through all of this.

I’m in a frustrating situation at my store. This morning, when I showed up to work I was informed by my store manager that I was no longer allowed to work because my boyfriend is a paramedic. After being sent home, she later contacted me and told me that I will get CAT pay until May 4th and then I would have to take a leave of absence.

I understand the precautions but I can’t imagine this is a policy. I have a friend at another store that works at both a hospital and at Starbucks, and my managers mom is a nurse. If this is a case, then neither of them should be allowed to work. Every partner that is in the same household as a healthcare worker or works at a health care facility should be in the same situation.

My boyfriend wears protective gear to absolutely every call, respiratory related or not. He is in goggles, N95, gown and gloves. Not only that, but after every call the ambulance is sanitized inside out. If your mom works at a grocery store you are more likely to get infected through her, who probably only wears a cloth mask rather than the most effective masks (N95). At stores dozens of people could unawarely carry the virus, at least my boyfriend know when he’s in contact.

I’m just upset because I am being pushed into a corner where I will be left without pay and it seems that the standards are not the same across the board. I think this is more of my managers doing rather than her following proper protocols. Come on....her mother is a nurse. My friend works at a hospital and at Starbucks!!!!

Thanks for your guidance, stay positive <3

I’m assuming you’re in the states?

Refuse the LoA unless you can get it in writing from your SM/DM that you are not allowed to work. You’re essentially being told they do not have work for you. They HAVE to provide you hours or continue cat pay and if they refuse you’re eligible for unemployment.

I don´t think your SM understands the policy correctly. You DO qualify for Cat Pay through May 31st. Starbucks is asking all partners that live with a healthcare worker/first line responder that has direct exposure to Covid-19 patients to stay home.

This is **directly** from the Store Manager Guide: *Catastrophe Pay is available for partners who live with a healthcare worker or first line responder who works with or has direct exposure to COVID-19 patients.*

Call your SM back and tell her to re-read her SM Guide. If that fails, contact PRSC (or your DM).
