Alternatives to wearing masks ? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Skitsskatss
I know some stores are providing face shields for some people but I wonder if Starbucks will do the same? I’m nervous about coming back to work and having to wear a face mask for hours at a time. It makes it really hard to breathe for me and that triggers a panic attack. I can hardly go to the store for essentials because of how unbearable it feels.

Has anyone had the same experience? And what did you do to make it easier? What masks do you wear that makes it easier to breathe or what do you do to calm yourself down if it triggers anxiety or a panic attack?

Try using a bandana, or a scarf. Let’s more air in through the bottom

So I’ve been periodically trying different kinds of masks while on cat pay and I’ve found I can’t wear one. I have ptsd from a domestic violence incident and in under 2 minutes I have a panic attack every time. I can’t do it so my SM suggested loa until it’s no longer required. So idk.

I’m really sorry to hear that. I hope they’re being kind and accommodating :/ have you tried applying for unemployment until you can come back?

She is being nice about it. It just is what it is. I’ve already applied for unemployment and will know by Tuesday. If that comes through, it won’t be so bad.

I think face shields in ADDITION to the masks ( unfortunately) is going to be the best protection for us. I too can’t imagine an 8 hr shift doing what we do @ the ‘bux....( how health care workers do it-I don’t know!— they ARE front line heroes for sure! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻)

I am hoping that plexiglass shields/sneeze guards are in the works as we need those at DT- & MOST CERTAINLY AT POS 1/2 as of when cafes
Open to customers again ( hopefully no time soon)

Shields ARE A MUST FOR THOSE ON RETAIL ‘FRONT LINES’

plexiglass shields at DT seem to be the MINIMUM of what Sbux can do to protect us.

I also think we ( as in Sbux) need to encourage ( if not require) customers to wear masks- as that’s the ONLY OTHER THING that will protect us. Our masks just protect fellow partners & customers. Which is great/ but 100% mask compliance shows statistics of transmission reduction.

I’ve been experiencing the same thing! I like the above suggestion about the bandana..
If not maybe let your shift and SM know how it makes you feel and I’m sure they’ll be happy to accommodate your needs. Try some breathing exercises to calm down the hyperventilating if it occurs.

I haven’t gone back yet but I have the same concerns. I don’t like having my lower face covered at all! I ordered a face mask in a larger size so I’m hoping that is fine.

I experience anxiety/difficulty breathing with the mask, especially everything being such fast paced. I recommend taking frequent breaks if you need to just to drink some water and be able to breathe better. I went to a store this week to work a shift and I was having extremely bad anxiety with difficult breathing, I expressed it to my team lead and how it was my mental health being triggered and she disregarded it and sent me home.

for what it’s worth, i tried wearing a face shield like the ones used in hospitals and was told it was unacceptable because it does not wrap around my chin
