Just curious.. (self.starbucksbaristas)

Would you rather work more days with shorter shifts (like 7-12) or less days but longer shifts (like 7-3) just curious. I am doing long ones for the first time, and it will be interesting to see what I prefer.

Longer shifts with less days. It allows me to maximize my time spent outside of work. Since I do college online, I try to work on that on days I work long shifts since I'm tired anyway. Then I still have a couple of days to do as I please during the week.

Makes sense. I used to think I liked 5 hour shifts 5 days a week but next week I have an 8 hour so we’ll see how it goes- I hope I like it...

When you work those long shifts do you switch up what you do or are you on bar all day or one thing?
Morpho_Satri 5 points 3y ago
That, at least at my store, tends to be up to the barista & the shift. If someone is sick of being at one position after hours at it, someone is usually willing to swap, & most of our shifts will check in with everyone after a couple hours to make sure everyone is still comfortable.

At least, that's how afternoon/night crew work.

Longer shifts less days!

Tell me your reasoning! I’m just curious. Next week I have my first 8 hr shift. I know it’s not as efficient to work more days less hours, but idk I like to keep busy so..
But I’m going to try it out. It logically makes more sense. I’ll keep y’all posted :)
puglovinhoe [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Cuz shorter shifts do go by faster.. but the cost is you gotta do it more often...

Right now with corona going on it’s honestly just better to expose yourself less. So if it’s 2 day shifts for 8 hours each versus 4 day shifts for 4 hours each—I would choose longer hours less days. Also just in general less days more hours means more free time for yourself to do other things besides Starbucks which is healthy.

I usually work Monday thru Friday 630a to 230p or 700a to 3p. Its rough but once I take a lunch it goes by super fast

I love my short shifts! I am the open shift M-F 4:30-9-30am.
puglovinhoe [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Yesss they go by faster amirite !!
But do you feel as tho it’s less efficient?
Momisnotmyname 1 points 3y ago
Not for me and my lifestyle. I like the structure. I also have a kid.

Absolutely longer shifts. I love not having to come into the store at all and just chill 😊
puglovinhoe [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I’m gonna try out a longer shift! :)
_Pulltab_ 2 points 3y ago
I’m cool with either. I mostly work baby shifts as an opener but like long shifts as well. I only work 20-25 hours a week. If I had my perfect schedule it would be 3-4 short shifts and 1 longer shift.
puglovinhoe [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I’m gonna try out and 8 hour next week! Well see how it goes I’ve never done that before but I hope I prefer it
_Pulltab_ 2 points 3y ago
The nice thing about the 8 hour shift is you “should” get two 10s and a meal so it breaks up pretty well. The only thing I hate about longer shifts is when I wind up having to take my meal first.
puglovinhoe [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Here’s a question, what length of shifts get what kind of breaks? Like how many hours get you a lunch how many more than one break? I normally do 5 hr shifts
_Pulltab_ 1 points 3y ago
By policy, anything up to 6 hours gets a 10 (paid). If you work 6 or more, you get a 10 and a 30 (unpaid). I’m not sure what policy says about a second 10. It may be store specific, but I usually get two 10s and a 30 for an 8 hour shift.

I just want a consistent schedule. I hate fluctuations.
puglovinhoe [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I understand that for sure.

puglovinhoe [OP] 1 points 3y ago

I’m the opposite - I prefer short shifts. I currently do those - I told my SM I’m aiming for 20-25 hours a week so I usually do 2-3 days of 5.75 shifts and a day or two of 4 hour shifts.

It’s nice because I usually end up working mon-wed with thur-fri off (naturally) and then I work either Sat or Sun (sometimes both).
puglovinhoe [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Why do you prefer shorter shifts? Idk I used to think I do but I’d also rather just bang it out knowing the next day is mine
SirenGreenBean 2 points 3y ago
I have issues and if I work 8 hour days I burn out SO QUICK. I’ve worked at several retail and customer service jobs and they all worked me 8 hour days, 38-45 hours a week. I never lasted more than 6 months. 4-5 days of 4-5 hours is like, the perfect amount for me and my family. Pre COVID, it worked out that I had 2 days off during the week that allowed me to take my kid to therapies, and also have a day alone with my partner that we could do errands. Plus usually a weekend day off. So I feel like I get enough days off as is, that gaining an extra day by working an extra 3 hours a day didn’t seem worth it.

But I also am after 20-25 hours a week and am not relying just on my income to pay my bills. This job is more for my mental health, the insurance and free schooling. I need the routine of work and fuckin no one else offers it like the siren does. Walmart worked me to the bone. No one was hiring for part time work with benefits pre COVID.

Also I’m used to being stuck home 5 days a week. My partner has always worked jobs that are 5-6 days a week, every shift (1st through 3rd) and every holiday. So it really is a bonus for me to get 3 days a week off most weeks.
