No longer using the app to access my schedule (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SkylerSayys
So yesterday, I got someone to cover my shift for today. Or, what I thought was my shift. I was using the app because it's easier to see, but the app ended my shift 4 hours earlier than the schedule did, so I woke up to "hey where are you why aren't you here" messages and I was overall very confused. My app still said what I had gotten covered, and I knew the person covered me had shown up, so what went wrong?

The app didn't match the store schedule. This was the first time this has happened to me. Now I know I can't trust it, so about to get rid of it, but has this happened to any others? The app is just... wrong? Because I'm really confused about how this even happened. The rest of the days this week had my schedule in correctly, it was just today that was wrong. I don't think the schedule was changed, as it's upload date never changed, so I don't think that that was the issue, although if it was, the app is still supposed to update I think to show the current schedule. Anyway, I learned the hard way that I cannot use it and expect accuracy, and I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them. It was such a devastating thing to wake up to, and now I have to choose between going in (I love my job) to show I care, and failing an expensive college course that I can't afford to have to retake. That's not an excused call out, but also I did try to get coverage, and now it's just an awkward situation all around and I'm left unsure what to do. I hope I am alone in this experience, because it's less than fun, but it'd be interesting to see if others also had this happen to them.

Hope everyone's day is going significantly smoother than this, and sending you all good vibes!

Sorry btw if formatting looks strange, I'm on mobile.

Maybe the schedule changed but the DCR was never reprinted? My app always changes to the most current schedule.

My store has a discord where the schedule is uploaded for us, and the last upload for today's schedule was April 20th, so I dont believe that was the case. (If I look hard enough, I can read the schedule that gets uploaded for us, and it did disagree with the app for today). Its the first its done this so... yeah. Im just praying at this point I don't lose my job over this situation (I don't think I will but anxiety rules) because the app is not supposed to mess up like that

Discord? How would that be up to date unless the SM updated it any time a change was made? The app will show changes actually in the system. Are you saying that the discord is the last word? I do not believe that is how the company wants things run. If anyone got in trouble for this it should not be you.

He posts the schedules as soon as he prints them as far as I know, updates included. He keeps the server for us very up to date. For my store, its more effective than having a group chat, and it works really well for us. We have a lot of students, so people leave for a few weeks at a time for breaks, and it allows super easy communication to them for scheduling and announcements that they'll need to know about when they come back from breaks. It may not be how the company wants, but it works REALLY well for my specific location and is kept up to date on everything. Everything posted on the discord is also posted in store, it just allows a way for partners to see it before they get there. Its definitely not a thing every store can/should do, it just works really well for us. I'd be honestly surprised if the uploaded schedules were not up to date. I'm not saying that that's the "last word", but whatever schedule we have hanging up in our store goes to the discord server at the time of its being hung up, so its going to match whats posted in store/written in the book/ect (and it does match that 100% including today), it was only the app that did not match.

The main point I wanted to make for your benefit was that it isn’t your fault, and don’t miss class!

You should not lose your job over one incident. Especially when there was such a strange discrepancy. At absolute worst you’ll get a write up. But unless you have a history (which first impression, you don’t) of problematic behavior then you should be okay. Every region/district/store has its own culture, but I can’t see you being in too deep of water here.

I really think I'll be fine (possibly get a write up at worst) just anxiety is at its all time peak currently. And honestly, I feel like my SM will understand and not even want to do a write up but may because of our DM.

not personally, but another barista at my store had a few weeks where they were shown someone else's schedule, & not even someone from our store. im not sure how they fixed it, its been a while, but i think they uninstalled & reinstalled.

normally what i do is take a picture of the schedule & put what THAT says into my calendar app, then if the app doesnt sound right i defer to the paper schedule & any "manual" changes my manager has made or swaps ive written in.

that all said, even if you dont trust the schedule portion, might want to keep the app just so you can use the availability/time off request parts. but then, if your manager is more easily reachable & organized for those things (mine is /not/) then delete that shit & retake some space on your phone.

tldr; when in doubt, technology is failable so whatever backups and precautions you can take, yknow?

Yeah I definitely regret relying on the app. I initially just did because it was so much easier to read but definitely bot doing so any more, I have learned the hard way. I may keep it for the request off feature, thats a good idea. I know my manager prefers if we do it that way

My manager said last week they were having issues with it, like it was making random shifts for people & couldn’t fix it. Maybe that’s what happened
SkylerSayys [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Hmm possibly. I haven't heard about those issues but considering it did something similar to me, I would not be surprised if thats the case.
