we need to go on strike (self.starbucksbaristas)

***seriously.***

i've had it... that BS meditation meeting made me so angry, i made an account just to post this.

**we need to unionize asap.**

they think they can just end CAT pay and hazard pay when this pandemic is clearly not going away in one fucking month?? but they’re still gonna make us do that silly check in?????? what’s the end game there *Kevin*??? all that language in the prerecorded meeting of reopening the fucking stores but NO PLAN to regulate the amount of customers allowed in??? to make sure EVERY SINGLE CUSTOMER is wearing a mask??????? are they installing hand sanitizer dispensers or hand washing sinks outside of the doors???? ANYTHING AT ALL????? is starbucks gonna throw down the cash necessary to provide all of us with masks that are, ya know, ACTUAL MASKS??????? and to rub salt in the fucking wound they think the extra, soon to be cut, 3 fucking dollars is fair compensation?????

they are just tempting fate to make each and every one of our stores a hot spot for this virus. if they are gonna force us back to work to risk OUR health, the health of our COMMUNITY and LOVED ones we should at least be compensated accordingly.

my thoughts on what the New Barista Basics (😏) should be:

$15/hr is the new CAT pay with none of the "you have to be working to get this" nonsense. if you need to stay home for whatever reason, you get this. if you are working but your hours aren't what they normally are? this pay fills that gap. (starbucks has fucking ***NEVER*** compensated us fairly, consider this backpay bitch)

$20/hr for stores doing mobile/drive thru **only** (no exceptions. none. like, if your shithead manager lets a single fucking customer inside the store y'all are permanently moved to the next level. & to those that have been doing this for weeks i'm sorry you were not paid what you deserved. while the risk is smaller it is *still* a risk)

$30/hr if they really wanna be insane and open up the fucking cafes in *any* capacity (grab & go counts corporate don’t EVEN try me)

these last the duration of the pandemic, and when it's all said and done nationwide base pay will be a minimum of $15/hr. not a penny less.

Kevin Johnson will survive without his million dollar bonuses, he already gets paid millions of dollars a year. All the execs & shareholders can cry in their mansions about it later. Do not let this ***MULTI BILLION DOLLAR*** company fool you into thinking they can't pay us what we deserve. if they really wanna try and say they can't pay us for the risk they want us to take, close ***ALL*** the god damn stores ‘cause ***WE SHOULDN'T EVEN BE OPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!***

thoughts? who's in? corporate drew a line in the sand. let’s organize and draw our own.

in solidarity,
✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
Colorado

***update:***
i created a private slack channel if y’all are ready to get serious.

I would rather live in a world with out Starbucks than see one barista die because someone really wanted a Carmel Macchiato.

Your life is precious. No amount of money is worth your life. If corporate wants us to risk our lives they should acknowledge how much their asking us to risk just to make corporate more money.

If we managed to actually cost corporate enough they will be forced to comply with us. Just because Starbucks is slightly less awful than McDonalds does t mean we shouldn’t demand better treatment. At the end of the day we are being asked to risk our life and our long term health to make lattes and endure verbal abuse, we deserve better. Remember that your coworkers are your comrades, where as corporate, and especially the ceo just wants to exploit you.

Your life matters more than 13 dollars an hour.
unknownstonedfruit 21 points 3y ago
just because the shit sandwich corporate is giving us is a *little* less smelly than the rest of corporate america doesn’t make it chocolate and we shouldn’t fucking take this anymore.

My only worry is that my real name would be out there. Even that much worries me because as much as I dislike my job I'm not trying to lose it either.

not sure i agree that rolling days is beneficial, i fear it might make us look uncommitted and not as strong as a united front. tbh i don’t trust facebook lol like at all. how many people are familiar with slack? we can create a private group there, invite only. will probably be easier to integrate google docs when we’re brainstorming a letter with our demands as well as best tactics.
YeetOnEm1738 9 points 3y ago
Are you all comfortable paying union dues?

Yes.

unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
absolutely.
RunTheWatchOver 8 points 3y ago
I AM ALL FOR UNIONIZING. you want in, you buy in. You dont you dont
ilovebrandonj 7 points 3y ago
at least you still have a job. most companies just fired everyone.
hmidwop 31 points 3y ago
Yeah and they collect more on unemployment in one week than I make in a month

RunTheWatchOver 6 points 3y ago
Yeah. And that isnt right either.
rhondasmelody 5 points 3y ago
Heres the thing. Yeah, this sucks. But I know that I *cant afford* to go on strike. Dont get me wrong, the people still working should be paid more. No ones health is worth $3. Thats silly.

But beyond that, Starbucks was able to do what not many stores could do for their employees. My roommate is out of work STILL and the only reason we could stay afloat was because I had a constant income without working due to him being high risk.

Im inbetween a rock and a hard place. Yeah, we definitely deserve more, but I cant in good consciousness complain when this company is able and doing more for thier employees then many others.
unknownstonedfruit 3 points 3y ago
i totally understand this, i can’t really afford to go on strike but i also can’t afford to continue being paid poverty wages for this soul crushing work. i can’t afford for starbucks to cut our pay while our hours are *significantly* cut and the customers that are...... feeling lucky and coming out aren’t fucking tipping. they’ve already given us the false choice of coming back to work and getting both hazard pay & CAT pay or staying home to starve and become homeless. we’re all being placed in a *very* precarious position and being asked to smile and be grateful about it, but it will get worse if we don’t act now. ***they’ve already told us so. we have less than a month now to force another outcome***

to try & ease your concerns a bit... this is where i think we can build up our own mutual aid networks (there may already be some in our respective areas able to help as well). how many stores do you have in your district let alone your town/city/state? think of the power we can build. we can pool our resources and care for each other since corporate (& our government tbh) won’t. we can set up gofundme’s for the world to donate to if they want to help us while we fight for what we deserve. this can be as simple as every single one of us calling out sick on the same day(s) & asking the world to boycott. they can’t fire all of us and i guarantee starbucks doesn’t want to be known for firing workers demanding basic protections & fair hazard pay *in the middle of a pandemic* for PR reasons. they like to pretend they’re the corporation that actually cares about their employees, they pat themselves on the back for this ***constantly***, it’s time to put their money where their mouth is.

yeah it seems this is the best tactic we have right now... coupled with some responsible socially distanced demonstrations sounds like the recipe to win.

We need a standard for other companies to live up to and starbucks can afford it. I live in Orlando and unions fought and negotiated for employees at Disney (park and hotel workers) to make a minimum of 15/hr by 2021. They finally won and it pushed Universal and SeaWorld to offer better packages. These corporations can do it, they just choose not to.
PurpleTIEFighter 5 points 3y ago
Yeah. We do. But no one seems to be stepping up to the plate to organize (or unionize).
JCaligirl420 3 points 3y ago
I have a partner in my store that is ready to get it going. We just need to say when.
PurpleTIEFighter 2 points 3y ago
Well. Definitely 'when', lol.
unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
the fact of the matter is we can't wait for some other barista to come along and do the work for us. *we* need to do this. together. and we need to do it soon.

we just need to find the best way to stay connected and get the ball rolling.
PurpleTIEFighter 1 points 3y ago
Also true. I can't wait for this to finally get up and running, even if I don't know if I'm going to stick with the company to be able to see the benefits.

I'll do whatever I can.
unknownstonedfruit 2 points 3y ago
i did create a slack group with a both a private channel to specifically talk about organizing (only i can invite people to it right now and no one should be able to find it) & public channel (who says we can’t share memes too?). i chose slack (it’s free too 🥳) instead of facebook so we don’t have to put down our full names or even our real names until we feel secure with the group.... i’d start having serious conversations with those you work with.

and anyone else reading this, message me if you want the slack info.
PurpleTIEFighter 1 points 3y ago
I definitely want the info.

Why don’t you just find a better paying job? You knew exactly how much you would be getting paid when you were getting hired. If that wasn’t enough, why take the job?
unknownstonedfruit 2 points 3y ago
you’ve never actually had to work to survive, have you?

hey fellow baristas, this asshole wants us all to just go down to The Job Store and pick out the Perfect Job ‘cause that’s how life works
mykotman12 1 points 3y ago
I did and while I was working to survive I kept looking and applying for better jobs until I got one (didn’t even take that long). You are the only person responsible for your life. Don’t like it how it’s going? Change it. It might take a while, but so what? Don’t blame others for your misery. Stop being a victim. Better your life.
unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
you very clearly don’t know what the US job market is like now
mykotman12 1 points 3y ago
I do actually. And even in these hard times, you can still find a job. You can always go in to a temp agency and get a job that pays more than Starbucks and work that job till job market gets better. My friend went there on Monday and got a job that pays $18 an hour the next day working in a warehouse with no customers to deal with and listening to his own music. Look at any temp places...they have listings for almost any field. Despite the virus, there are still plenty of companies that are still hiring.
You always have choices. It’s up to you what choices you make in life and if you choose to stay at the company that you hate and be miserable...that’s on you and not the company. Don’t blame Starbucks for your own choices, my friend.

Minimum wage does not need to be $15 an hour nationwide. Certain places for COL, yes.

You raise minimum wage for unskilled jobs, you'll have to raise other prices to afford it. Welcome to reduced hours, cut employees, and double the work.
unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
$1

and i ***refuse*** to leave my fellow beans in in Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky, and West Virginia behind. we have *never* been fairly compensated for our labor. i'm not even talking about what it takes to live comfortably in our respective states yet. but either way you're still wrong.

YeetOnEm1738 1 points 3y ago
How the fuck is this comment downvoted? Do you people not pay attention to the real world?
nerdheartRN -4 points 3y ago
It's reality that's why. A $15.00 an hour starting wage is not sustainable for most businesses in smaller cost of living areas. Unless you want to pay crazy money for products.

Reality is, there are other jobs that pay more money but require an actual skillset or education.

Most electrician apprentices I know make $15 or more to start out. Actual skillet, experience needed, and an essential job.

Truth hurts. A temporary hike in pay during a pandemic is one thing. But for good? Heck no.
unknownstonedfruit 2 points 3y ago
guess what bud? those electrician you know are being exploited and need to unionize as well.

and if businesses can't afford to pay a living wage they were never viable to begin with. hope this helps.
ALoafOfBagels -4 points 3y ago
Be glad Starbucks is trying to maintain everyone's employment. Be glad you've been able to receive cat pay in the first place.

Have you seen how many people have been getting laid off? How many businesses have had to shut down entirely? Be grateful you've made it this far.

Quick Edit: also those masks aren't supposed to prevent YOU from getting sick, they're supposed to prevent OTHERS from getting sick. They trap all of the moisture that comes out of your mouth and nose from breathing, sneezing, coughing, etc. And the most common way for the coronavirus to spread is by saliva. Most masks won't even prevent you from getting sick; they just do a better job of saving others from getting sick.
drunk_coffee_addict 3 points 3y ago
That’s true about what the masks are SUPPOSED to do, but the cheap AF ones provided barely cover the face, and do not have ANY sort of seal around the edge. It’s a total joke. Those ‘disposable’ masks are literally not preventing the spread of ANY disease. Also the thermometer provided for check in is cheaply made and crazy inaccurate! My partners temps range from 66.8F (yes you read that right) to 98.9F, who knows if it would even register someone with a fever of any kind!!!
RunTheWatchOver 3 points 3y ago
We arent talking about a small, one location business in a city. I work and manage one of those too and we got hit so fucking hard. The days and nights we brainstormed to find a way to make revenue so we could just PAY our employees once everything was lifted was exhausting. I am lucky to also work at Sbux, which continued my pay and benefits. My girlfriend works for a local company and went from making 1500/wk to 300/wk. I get get it. But with starbucks, We are talking about a billion dollar company, whose CEOs and managers are still banking. My store manager got a 5500 bonus for working during quarantine. And she bragged about it. I havent seen her that much in 2 years. It's fucked. As a company who claims all this progressive shit, they should do better. They CAN do better, but there is no one pressuring to do so. They just maintain the status quo.
oldmansbux -3 points 3y ago
Do you want to go full automated because this is how you go full automated.
unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
not at all true but go off i guess
oldmansbux 1 points 3y ago
well...good luck with all that. its nice to dream
Cold-Relation -37 points 3y ago
Hell no, I understand the frustrations but the pay is at market.

My girlfriend understands this and reported her coworker to management that was trying to organize. Why would you try to jeopardize others employment in a pandemic?
dahmerpalms 31 points 3y ago
Your girlfriend is a shitbird
Cold-Relation -21 points 3y ago
How civil of you.

I guess you are one of those people who thinks that their opinions are the universal right.
tsmcrw 27 points 3y ago
It’s cool if you disagree but your girlfriend just lost someone their job
Cold-Relation -7 points 3y ago
Nope, he was just given a stern warning. He won’t be let go if he stops with union nonsense and so far he’s going great.

He was a great guy but just had the wrong ideas.
gone_gay 2 points 3y ago
Pls report this man en masse
unknownstonedfruit 1 points 3y ago
this is hella illegal.

edit: if this happened/happens to you you can file a charge (complaint) $1. labor laws in the US aren’t great but we still have the right to organize without intimidation or retaliation.
Remi-Chan 25 points 3y ago
Your girlfriend is a narc, dude.
PurpleTIEFighter 19 points 3y ago
Your girlfriend ought to be fucking ashamed.
criesincoffee 14 points 3y ago
Your girlfriend is a class traitor, hope she loves the taste of boot
