Policy question about customers NOT wearing masks(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RenEldritch
I have taken a leave of absence, but I am curious... If a state / city / or county has a “mask required in public” order (possible fines and jail time if not complying with the order) what is the policy for customers who show up, in these states / cities / or counties NOT wearing a mask? Can OR are we refusing service? If someone shows up in the DT or comes to pick up a mobile order and does NOT have a mask on, and being in a state / city / county that has a “masks are required while in public” order, what is Starbucks’ stance on this issue? I, personally, think since that customer is obviously putting themselves and others at risk, we should be allowed / able / required to refuse service until they adhere to the state’s / cities’ / counties’ mask policies. But I have a feeling, SB doesn’t see it that way and will just say “make the moment right”. But that “moment” will potentially get others / employees infected. Thoughts?

in california it’s not allowed to make customers wear masks to the DT window, and places that do do that can get fined. a person can’t get fined for not wearing a mask in their own car.

are you sure that’s true? Doesn’t make sense at all, businesses can require a dress code.

i’ve asked both my SM and the shifts a couple times to make sure and that’s what they’ve told me. they said that a person isn’t required to wear a mask in their cars when out and about, so it’s the same when at a DT. i could be wrong and getting wrong information, and it could be different in other counties/states/countries, but that’s what i’ve been told

I looked further into it and there’s no fine for such a thing. I can understand it being a recommendation but a fine wouldn’t make sense in this scenario. I’m in Riverside County for reference.

coming from contra costa county it could be different. i know some counties don’t require masks at all times/certain places, and some require them basically everywhere. i thinks it’s a matter of where your store is located and the mandates that are put on that county. but like i said i could be totally wrong and am getting the wrong info from people.

We’ve been asking people who come without masks to pull their shirt up for this time, but gently remind them to bring one next time.

Honestly, I'm so scared of getting shot, I just let it be and keep my distance.

You have to follow the emergency orders from your government, and local health department.
My store requires customers to wear masks, but the next county over doesn't have the same emergency order and they don't require it.

Easy rule of thumb is we don’t get paid enough to enforce the law. It won’t kill you to just trade their money for our drinks. Def could also file under the ‘bigger fish to fry’ ordeal. Most people coming through arent essential workers anyways (my own store has our fair share of actual nurses or other working class people, but also bored moms who just do 3 laps through our drive through before going home), so dying on this hill may not be the smartest choice of action. Here’s why;
Doing something like ‘no mask no service’ has to come from the top up, something I HIGHLY doubt corporate will even entertain for a second as cancel culture is high, and profits are already low. If it’s only enforced from your store you’ll no doubt get ‘tHe OtHeR Starbucks LETS ME’ and then calls to your district manager. If it’s just you you’ll get ‘that ONE barista has a stick up their ass’ and they’ll ask for your SM.
If it kills you to interact with customers who aren’t wearing masks, I’m absolutely positive your shift or store manager wouldn’t have a problem keeping you off window. No one would even take it the wrong way as that’s a personal choice you’re making, and an easy decision to respect and uphold.
I know this pandemic stuff is rough, so we have to make sure to not make it any rougher than need be. Unfortunate but def gotta roll with the punches unless there’s another opportunity available to you (I know a partner who already planned on leaving, but found out they’d be making 1.35 times as much on unemployment checks, I myself am sticking around until a better job offer comes up once quarantine lifts).
Anyhow, I wish you the best fam. All in all, find exactly what’s best for you, know it, and then do that. Take care.

“it won’t kill you” bro tell me ur joking right now

My fault I phrased that poorly. What I meant was that if you’re genuinely fearing for your life, a stranger wearing a mask won’t be the deciding factor. There are many options you can take to avoid that situation, especially considering we all know we have no power to enforce laws on our uptight and entitled customers. No matter how right or wrong the situation is. Then again, if that was your only take away from my entire comment then it doesn’t matter anyways.

Except that it will be. We are wearing them for a reason
Azra-l2 points3y ago
We are wearing them for a reason yes (most because it’s our choice and some because it’s our job). The customers do not have those obligations. We know that. I’m only pointing out we can’t MAKE customers wear them because corporate won’t back that decision. If that’s a genuine problem for you, it’s best to understand it’s inevitable. Some customers will not wear masks, and there is no option to force them to; Which is why I suggested if you’re not comfortable with being around customers whom aren’t wearing masks to remove yourself from that situation (either by letting your shift know you can’t window, or other options).
