I’m a licensed store barista and in a union. Here’s a snapshot of what the union does for me:
- consistent hours week to week
- job security: I cannot be fired without recourse
- collective bargaining for yearly raises
- help from my rep that’s outside the corporate structure when dealing with management

Unions are not perfect but I’m happy I’m in one instead of not.

Woah! Where’s your store? What was the process like to unionize??
thepotatocatmeow 12 points 3y ago
It’s a licensed kiosk inside a grocery store. We are part of a union that included grocery, retail, and health care workers. They were unionized long before I was hired.

Hey! Im a starbucks partner. I was wondering if you'd mind if I share this on other platforms? (Instagram, snapchat, facebook)?

We'd be fired if we tried to set up a union

A lot of states are “at will employment “. They can terminate your employment at any time without warning or reason.
siriushendrix 13 points 3y ago
California is definitely one of them. Got fired from a job and when I asked why he just told me that he doesn’t have to tell me and I’m like well you’re already firing me and you won’t see me again. Get off your high horse
KusanagiShiro 7 points 3y ago
It was the same way for me when I worked at Slaveway. I was there three weeks. A cart got away from me. Normally a warning offense. Manager fired me just because he didn't like me.

They know how much we make. They know we can't afford to go after them if they were to do something illegal.

whatismineisyours 5 points 3y ago
They'll just say it was for other reasons. Then they will just find someone else to replace us.
Virth 1 points 3y ago
Is that dependent on the state?
Just curious. I’m not exactly knowledgeable on laws and didn’t know it was illegal to attempt to unionize. I thought it was in our handbook that we are not allowed to unionize and can be reprimanded for it (I could be wrong about that).

guys if this ever happens to you $1. it’s hella illegal. you only have to fill out the form and the nlrb will do the rest.
spaceman_cat 3 points 3y ago
Yeah I live in Texas and the firing laws are very lax you could be fired for almost anything they do not care
the_battousai89 2 points 3y ago
They can’t fire everyone.

What do you envision this hypothetical union doing for us?
[deleted] [OP] 12 points 3y ago

whatismineisyours 8 points 3y ago
How much would union dues be? When would we pay them? Weekly? Monthly? Say it's 200 a month, would that mean a smaller store with 10 employees has to pay more than a store with 20? Would we all be members of said union where our votes count, or just represented by a union? What if not employees feel the same way about a union, what happens then?

A union would create a "us vs. them" mentality. So, who is "us?" The barista and shifts? Do we include our store managers even though they are considered management?

If we get higher pay, would our prices have to increase to match that pay? How would customers feel about that? What if we demand such high wages that we have to fire people? Or stop hiring people? Would that create staffing issues at your store?

What if you start to disagree with what your union is doing? When it comes to promotions or layoffs what do you envision happening? What happens to the individuality that it seems a lot of Starbucks employees enjoy? How will seniority come into play? What if you're a great worker that gets passed up on a promotion to shift to someone else just because they've been with Sbux longer?

A big appeal of unions are the benefits, what benefits of a union do you think we don't already have? PT employees get health insurance, sick time, vacation time etc. But right now it seems like you just want higher wages, understandable, and the feeling of not being forced to work during a pandemic, also understandable. But it doesn't seem like a union is needed for that.

If customers stop coming then stores don't make money, then they close, then you have no job. A store down the street from me closed, because they weren't making enough money by being sandwiched between two stores that had drive thrus.

How is the union going to support us so we aren't understaffed? You need physical bodies to be properly staffed. My store manager is on the floor so she would be considered to be part of this worker's union even though she is also considered management? If your baristas are not properly trained then that is an issue with your trainer.

I have not known Starbucks to just promote baristas. Like many retail jobs you don't just get promoted, you apply for it.

**EVERY** survey shows unionized workers are happy? You're gonna have to provide those surveys for me to 100 percent believe that.

I get where you are coming from, and I'm not saying unions are a bad thing, I'm saying it might not be the solution for us. If we want things like a livable wage then we need to vote during election time, and support people that will fight for issues like such.

Good thing there are plenty of organizations ready to help answer all those questions and help hope-to-be unions get off the ground!

$1

Nobody NEEDS a union until they do.
whatismineisyours 3 points 3y ago
Yeah I know. A lot of OP's post, in my eyes, has more to do with the government, and how things are. A lot of the statements are not unique to us.

Lots of people live paycheck to paycheck, lots of people are deemed low skilled because of their pay. Issues like affordable healthcare are not something Starbucks is suddenly going to fix by paying us more.

I’m sorry... but if you despise your job and this company (imo that has taken better care of their employees, than any other company in the industry... my friend at Peet’s hasn’t worked/gotten paid since the last week of March. He doesn’t get catastrophe pay, FREE college education, health insurance, free 20 sessions on Lyra, mark outs, cup fund, perks at work, free Spotify, or any of those amazing things. And if he quits, he is not eligible for unemployment.) ...........then just Quit. Do you know how much of a difference it makes when working with a partner who is excited, motivated, and ready to work vs. a partner that complains about everything and their only conscious thought is “I hate this place” or “I can’t wait to get out of here”. I understand everyone has their days but it can make a drastic difference in the workplace. For the sake of your sanity and the sanity of your fellow partners, maybe start looking into other options.
Mtate1945 16 points 3y ago
Does it matter that its better than other terrible jobs? I mean, im grateful for what Starbucks HAS done, but I believe it can still be better.
KifferKen -5 points 3y ago
Yes, it does matter that it’s “better than other terrible jobs”. It’s called gratitude. If you change your perspective, your views on Starbucks might alter. I worked at a local cafe for 4 years prior to Starbucks. I made $9.50 an hour (after my “raise” which took 2 years to get), zero benefits, working 50-60 hour some weeks without overtime, and didn’t have any resources for problems in the workplace. So Starbucks is doing wayyyyy more than I would’ve ever asked for. If this company is not doing enough to meet your needs, then find a company that does.
drinkliquidclocks 6 points 3y ago
We don't need gratitude for a company that doesn't pay a living wage, bootlicker.
KifferKen -5 points 3y ago
“Doesn’t pay a living wage” LMAO are you expecting $25 an hour for an entry level job, where you make coffee?! Seriously sounds like it’s time for you to find a new job, but good luck bc your entitlement might be too high. To make a “living wage” in America you have to go to college, get a degree, and do everything by the book. Maybe use your energy to change that, instead of getting angry at a company that hasn’t done anything except provide for you. Jfc.
whatcanisay17 3 points 3y ago
Exactly! Can’t believe I found someone with some sense in this subreddit lmao
justbtweenuandme -3 points 3y ago
I've worked for larger companies that don't offer the benefits this coming offers. And never for PT employees! I've been in a union and been on the other side. Don't be lured that a union is going to get you something better. Do if you don't like the company go get yourself another job? Stop complaining!
lewabwee 5 points 3y ago
Stop complaining about people complaining!
KifferKen 4 points 3y ago
THANK YOU!!!! everyone’s panties are in a knot bc of my post. YOU choose to walk into that company and support them (literally), if you hate them so much and don’t want them to exist, then don’t freaking work there!!! Its pretty damn easy to quit.
lewabwee 4 points 3y ago
Unions can seek to have healthy relationships with their employers. They can exist not to fight people but to allow employees collective bargaining power so they can work with employers to make the workplace the best it can be. You can ultimately like your job but think it could be better. Unions can be the norm not the exception.
nobullshitplz 1 points 3y ago
They are there to steal your money as an extra tax. That’s why most unions don’t do shit and they force agreements with companies and people that the only way they can work is to be in their union, even if they don’t want to be. Fuck that
[deleted] [OP] 0 points 3y ago

nobullshitplz 0 points 3y ago
yeah until you grow your union and union membership a condition of employment. At that point the others have NO choice, and that’s why there’s right to work laws. I don’t want a shitty organization adding another tax on my paychecks, stealing my money. Fuck that

Ok so the raise covers the fee, and then what? You’re back down to the original pay that you hated, but you think the union doing fake work is a hero because they didn’t actually do anything.

The problem is that people like you don’t actually want change. What you want is to bitch all day long, and you enjoy the bitchiness. You want a fake solution to a problem that’s not actually a problem, and you can just keep bitching that something bad is going on. All for an organization that’s just going to steal your money and then fund it to corrupt politicians who will pretend to care about so that your brainwashed ass will vote for them.

It’s utterly ridiculous and retarded for me to be sitting here every night after work and seeing people complain about the lack of unions for a part time job that gives amazing benefits. Seeing you people talk about unionizing high school jobs and college jobs is sickening. Just because you failed in life, doesn’t mean you get to just fuck with the people actually doing something.
nobullshitplz -2 points 3y ago
I’m not paying union dues. Fuck that
