Do you think Starbucks is an "essential business"? (self.starbucksbaristas)

An essential business is defined as needed to sustain life.

You can get bags of coffee and cheap pastries at the grocery store so Starbucks ain’t needed
PossibleWishbone1 11 points 3y ago
Absolutely not. My manager even said it.

“People can make coffee at home.”

I’ve never agreed with her more.

Our manager told us she was disappointed we took CAT pay because clearly we didnt have the same passion for helping customers that she did...

Tell her you’re disappointed she does not inspire or nurture her partners’ human spirit and that she’s doing a disappointing job of reflecting Starbucks’ stated values.

My manger told us that we "take a burden off grocery stores"

Your manager is a reptile.

Absolutely not. we are a comfort. I actually don’t mind being at work, but we are at best a luxury. If people needed food that badly we should be giving it away

On one hand, having fast food places open encourage people to ignore the stay at home order but on the other if those places closed then so many people would be out of a job, and I doubt McDonald’s and KFC do any form of cat pay. It’s a lose-lost for everyone except the corporations imo

Everybody has the right to earn their wage and provide for themselves. THATS essential!

bc we serve food and drink and all that we are considered essential

I can see McDonalds, or really anywhere with an affordable menu being considered essential. Ive worked in a McDonald's in an extremely poverty stricken area, where the lack of access to grocery stores, the ability to cook food, etc made the restaurants essential for quite a few of our regulars. But Starbucks? Where its $5 for an itty bitty breakfast sandwich, and primarily located in upper middle class neighborhoods? No. Its a luxury.

I don't mind working, to be entirely honest. I just wish that it was more accurate and honest about the fact that its a luxury. Because no one who is so broke that they dont have the ability to cook/store food is gonna spend upwards of $10 on 1 drink and 1 minuscule food item.

ETA please excuse typos, I am on mobile and autocorrect is a pain.

i completely agree, i don’t think we are essential. there’s a pandemic going on, you don’t need your triple venti vanilla soy latte. but according to the CDC or whoever, bc we serve food and drink we are “essential” even tho each of those drinks costs an arm and a leg. starbucks is a corporation. they’re gonna do what they can to stay open and take advantage of any reason to be considered “essential”
2MuchTunaFish 10 points 3y ago
I don’t think Starbucks is essential, but I also don’t think fast food places should be open either. We have a really twisted view on what’s considered essential. IMO the only places that should be open right now are hospitals, grocery stores and gas stations.
nobullshitplz -2 points 3y ago
And what if a nurse or doctor has long shifts at the hospital, but you are now forcing them to take the time to cook at their homes instead of getting a prepared meal from a restaurant? But I also believe people’s ability to provide for themselves is essential, so I’m actually caring about them....

EDIT: Go ahead and downvote me like the selfish people you like to be
MissCleoDarling 2 points 3y ago
Infecting potentially hundreds of people a day because an asymptomatic cashier is handing out contaminated food won't help that nurse either when those same people flood an already maxed out hospital.

There are options for contactless food. Microwaves, food preps, simple meals, ANYTHING.

Part of the discourse surrounding "people’s ability to provide for themselves is essential" is the idea that essential workers are being asked to risk their health and safety (as well as their loved ones) or starve. You shouldn't have to gamble your well being to try to survive. Thats why, in these extreme situations, government intervention is a necessity.

Not to mention that many "essential" workers are the exact same people who are consistently denied minimum wage increase even though they're clearly important to daily function and currently putting themselves in real danger for 12$ an hour if they're lucky.

It's not selfish. This is a complicated and nuanced pandemic and broad generalizations dont help anyone.
