Just a quick question: can someone tell me the actual point of 1% milk? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kait_lynb
Like I know what it is, but I’m just curious on the why, you feel?
Gemma_V 268 points 3y ago
To give me anxiety in the middle of rush
DisorderlyHum 65 points 3y ago
Apparently it's closer to 2% than skim in how it tastes but is less calories. So if you're on a diet you can save on calories without having to drink skim milk.
howdudo 91 points 3y ago
i hear u but also like if they r on a diet, wat r they doing at starbucks lol
blkjoey 46 points 3y ago
the diets that most people are likely to stick to are slow and gradual. small consistent changes add up and can help someone lose weight, such as opting for 1% everytime, or getting egg white bites instead of a sandwich. A venti americano with 1% really isn’t a lot of calories.
NOTcreative- 38 points 3y ago
What do you mean? Not everything is a sugary drink loaded with calories. Not every food item is unhealthy.
siriushendrix 13 points 3y ago
They could get 1% with frappacinos and proceed to get pumps of everything. Very common at my store and I’m assuming at other stores
yyz_barista 17 points 3y ago
That's why we have skinny. /s
DisorderlyHum 4 points 3y ago
Fair point lol
GaggleGuy -2 points 3y ago
This
Peebles46 2 points 3y ago
1% makes more sense than skim. There’s apparently way more sugar in skim milk
danslavraievie 42 points 3y ago
A customer asked for 1% milk and I was like "oh sorry actually we only have non-fat and 2%" and she just left 💀
Herry_Up 20 points 3y ago
Problem solved lol
foxxy_roxxy 42 points 3y ago
i want to know what stores have it? ive worked at 3 different stores in two different states and ive never seen 1% milk on a order sheet.
violheist 58 points 3y ago
what do you mean? you just do half nonfat and half 2% for however much milk is in each drink. no one gets gallons of 1%
bananamilkdrink 14 points 3y ago
I thought it was a thing for Canadian stores but maybe my mind made that up
sandwitch018 20 points 3y ago
Canadian partner, no 1% here either. Or at least not in western Canada.
violheist 6 points 3y ago
ah i see. i'm not sure about that but i do think the milk bags and pitchers are kinda neat hahaha
brooklynjohnston 2 points 3y ago
Don’t worry In Calgary, AB stores that have a demand for it have 1% so some stores do but I think a very very small percent do.
different_as_can_be 25 points 3y ago
we got, for whatever reason, ONE gallon of 1% and honestly i felt like i was seeing some rare celebrity.
nerdheartRN 28 points 3y ago
I just did nonfat. No time for that silliness.
MonstrousGiggling 10 points 3y ago
Same literally whenever we get a 1% the barista makes a joke about well I guess they're getting (insert milk closest to their hand).

Like its really not extra work but...like...it is. LOL.
sandycat555 19 points 3y ago
I used to drink a lot of 1% milk when I was a kid. Skim milk tasted like water. 1% was like milk flavored water. 2% is almost like whole milk (probably why Starbucks uses 2% for nearly all their drinks).

I don't see the point of 1% in an Americano though, just put less 2% in.

They probably just don't realize we don't carry bottles of it.
spicypotatogurl 17 points 3y ago
My store doesn't have it either... so I usually use nonfat and no one knows the difference... 🙈
sunnyismybunny 20 points 3y ago
??? No store “has” it you just mix half skim and half 2%
lewabwee 14 points 3y ago
It’s for people who mistakenly believe nonfat is healthier for you, or at least will help you stay thin, but don’t have the resolve to drink it because it’s watery and nasty.

A very small number of people seem to actually prefer the taste.

Just drink whole milk, kids. Whole milk isn’t the thing that’s ruining your diet.
pinkshadedgirafe 8 points 3y ago
Not necessarily true. I had my gallbladder removed, so things with lower fat contact work best for me.

Whole milk doesn't process well with my body, and nonfat is too watery.
lewabwee 1 points 3y ago
That’s totally fair. I’m mostly kinda commenting on all the people who think they’re doing something for their health by getting a white mocha with nonfat and no whip.
shouldvewroteitdown 8 points 3y ago
I’m a nonfat to 1% drinker because I think that anything with more fat in it is too thick and leaves a nasty film (for lack of a better word) behind in my mouth.
xEman26x 4 points 3y ago
Whole milk is just 3.25% which I never knew
vellamour 12 points 3y ago
Some guy orders his coffee with “40%”... he just wants heavy cream. But if you tell him he means heavy cream, he gets pissed.
sass_mouth39 6 points 3y ago
The pretension is real.
molde37 2 points 3y ago
AMEN.
deluxe_anxiety 11 points 3y ago
To give us a chance to lie to customers, ain’t no way I’m dropping half 2% and half nonfat grow tf up
Vosstonmass1 7 points 3y ago
I very rarely take the time to mix milks. If I’m on register I take the time to point out that we don’t carry 1% milk and that we will have to combine nonfat and 2%
nyliag 4 points 3y ago
To provide the illusion of choice to our customers - I always do skim, one of my partners always does 2%, another mixes them.
sadboy0810 3 points 3y ago
For the Karen’s of the wrld
pinkshadedgirafe 3 points 3y ago
I don't have a gallbladder, so lower fat contact is best for me. However, nonfat milk is too watery
SuperDisasterGay 2 points 3y ago
Karen hates baristas
L_Swizzlesticks 2 points 3y ago
I was raised on 1% milk and it’s the only kind I liked drinking before I became lactose intolerant and cut out dairy milk altogether. For me, 2% is ever so slightly too thick and makes me feel like I’m drinking fatty milk and non-fat milk is just watery and gross. 1% is the perfect middle ground.
rblxr9 2 points 3y ago
To be obnoxious
radical-monster 2 points 3y ago
Nothing. There’s no point.
espressnooo 1 points 3y ago
Half 2% half non fat. Not sure why we technically have it. Usually I just do non fat
KeyCranberry 1 points 3y ago
My taste buds are all burnt and dead but I bet for someone whose aren't, you could tell the difference if it's like a grande+ iced latte or something. For a splash of it in an Americano, it's hard for me to find the patience to mix it out, but I try, and I make sure to if it's a very milky drink.
Pylon-Cam 1 points 3y ago
I grew up drinking 1%. My guess is that most people are in a similar situation and they order it because that’s what they’re used to.

And most customers don’t know that we don’t actually have 1%, so try not to get annoyed with them.
kait_lynb [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Oh I’m not annoyed! I was actually curious on what the purpose of 1% is
star_pants 1 points 3y ago
"I'm totally not on a diet so I wont get nonfat but I'm kind of on a diet so I'll get 1%"
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 3y ago
My store doesn't have it, when I tell customers that they ask me to do 1/2 skim 1/2 2% 🥴🥴
captainofkitten 1 points 3y ago
Wait isn’t 1% milk nonfat? That’s what I’ve been doing this whole time
kait_lynb [OP] 3 points 3y ago
1% is an even mix of nonfat and 2%
captainofkitten 2 points 3y ago
Wow now I know, half and half of each?
kait_lynb [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Yeah, at least that’s how I was trained
unsatisfied_plant 0 points 3y ago
Idk I usually disregard it and put nonfat because even if I mix it myself, it’s never going to truly be 1% milk
gaayrat 0 points 3y ago
I always do nonfat
