Drive thru times (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Trap_Kween
I can handle a few rude customers and I can handle a few stressed out employees BUT when my ONLY task is to take the payment and hand out a drink, do NOT come yelling at me if the person waits. If they have a question, I’m going to answer it, if i made a mistake I’m going to fix it. If there is no drink to hand out, that is technically not my fault. Both my manager and shift supervisor have criticized me for being slow with the times and I’ve had enough. That’s out of my control.

Or am I wrong?
qwasyas 111 points 3y ago
Lol I’m a shift and we haven’t looked at DT times since fucking march!

Also smile at your SM and SSV and say you are making customer connections, which is the main focus of the starbucks third place model.
Trap_Kween [OP] 39 points 3y ago
The thing is. IT’S JUST ONE SHIFT. nobody else gives a fuck! Like idk why they expect the times to be good rn
lpasternacki 21 points 3y ago
I do only because our line wraps around our INCREDIBLY long shopping strip and I want to get as many cars through as possible. 9/10 it’s not the window person’s fault; it’s more than likely a backup of food or drinks. As long as my window person is doing what they’re supposed to, they’re not getting any negative comments from me!!
TheFocuser 10 points 3y ago
i’m sure your store isn’t the only one with a line wrapped around a shopping strip lol, no matter the issue you shouldn’t give anyone on your floor negative comments. not saying you do but from what this comment implies , you do.
lpasternacki 8 points 3y ago
My comment was meant to imply that just because someone is at the window doesn’t mean the DT times rest solely on them. I look at every position to determine where the kink in the chain is and adjust the play accordingly. Maybe the words negative comments weren’t the right ones for this, but as a shift it is literally my job to coach incorrect behaviors. I know we aren’t the only ones, I merely stated that to back up my statement regarding DT times.
kait_lynb 87 points 3y ago
It’s the responsibility of the full team to get drive times down. If you’ve finished your job, then it’s not your fault
KingDuck7 19 points 3y ago
Your management is delusional. With everything going on it should just be about trying your best and supporting one another
universejuice5577 19 points 3y ago
Just quit like I did. The siren doesn't care about you.
Simplyroro 17 points 3y ago
I rotate partners out hourly because I'm trying to limit everyone's window time to a minimum. That being said some of my partners are not as efficient on bar as others. I do NOT GIVE A RATS ASS... my partners safety and the ability for us to have a decent time is more important to me than drive times.

BIGGEST peeve ever. my manager gets on us for customer connection and wants our score to go up but when im having a lovely conversation with a customer ( which is already so rare) she starts to breath down my back and I can hear her whispering "get them out, get them out". like what the fuck do you want from me ? I get in trouble for not continuing a convo past "how are you?" and get in trouble for having a pleasant convo with a customer. we can never win tbh
lillyloveswriting 11 points 3y ago
You're not wrong! Whenever my shift supervisor gets mad I tell them straight up it's out of my control. I can easily make my window times low if there's a consistent flow but if someone is asking me a question or if their drink is wrong I'm going to make it right. The windows times will go back, my job is to also establish customer connections, don't get mad at me for doing my job.
Halesvs 8 points 3y ago
Are you the only person or do you also have a DTO? often the window person helps DTO by watching the screen and letting them know if there’s something their waiting on
GaggleGuy 2 points 3y ago
Currently a lot of stores are running plays without 2 people at the window to promote as much social distancing as possible.

My store has a closed cafe, so we put DTO on the front register who takes orders that the partner in the window looks up on their register. Frustrating as all hell, but it works.
Halesvs 2 points 3y ago
Yeah we’ve been doing that too- but according to that your DTO and bar partners should still be belong you set up next orders. My only advice would be just to say “hey next drink needed is this”. It works at my store cause they’re trained that way but if your bar partners up you also run the risk of thinking their annoyed with you. Maybe present that to whoever your shift is and see if that would be helpful for you to do? Anyway stay safe my friend it’s a weird world these days.
SeniorSalary 7 points 3y ago
My store manager went out of his way to explain to all the shifts and barista's to not worry about drive times. In fact, he told us to not even look at them. Like, at all. Right now, the only thing that matters is getting everyone adjusted back to work and adjusted to a new workplace (closed cafe, masks, cleaning everything, etc.). As long as drinks are being made and being made well, that's all that matters.
elsha007 7 points 3y ago
You're not wrong.
official_koda_ 6 points 3y ago
They seriously need to chill on the freaking DT times. I think there are currently worse things to worry about.
TheYesExpress 6 points 3y ago
How frustrating.

Honestly, I’d suggest telling your leads that you do not prefer to be on window. Try other positions like customer support, bar, even DTO. If your supervisor and leads have high standards for the window position, make it clear you do not feel comfortable working that position.
Inimitable--original 4 points 3y ago
SAAAME! I have this happen to me all the time too. It's really frustrating because I'm doing everything in my power to provide good and fast service but there are things out of my control. I totally feel this.
poorenglishmajor 4 points 3y ago
As a customer, I've used the drive-thru. I know I'm a problem. Really, Starbucks should never have had drive-thrus. Mobile Order was enough. One or the other. Both is just too much to ask of partners.
Kittens_bean 3 points 3y ago
By my understanding speed of service is suspended. It's safety of service.
JCaligirl420 3 points 3y ago
I’m a shift and I’m not even worried about dt times, my dm and sm aren’t either. Like we can’t control these times right now because everyone is coming through the dt. There’s no way we can be under 50 seconds right now! That sm just wants their bonus.
kqs13 3 points 3y ago
As long as you are communicating what you're waiting on and making good customer connections, that's what matters and you're doing your job properly. Yes, it is the whole team working together that will make things flow so of course everyone has responsibility, but if you're being targeted when it isn't you that is holding things up, that's not fair at all. As a SSV, I try to put everyone where I think it will make the best flow and if someone isn't pulling their weight, I just switch it up or give some quick coaching. If a supervisor is being rude to you or unfairly targeting you, that is not okay at all and should be addressed for sure!
Kyenne_Pepper123 3 points 3y ago
One of my old shifts used to do the exact same thing to me. She told me I needed to “be faster” and I snapped back and said “well maybe if you and the other person on bar weren’t talking so damn much and actually made drinks right I could pass out drinks faster”. After that she shut up
justbtweenuandme 3 points 3y ago
Don't sweat the small stuff! Serve em when you get them it's all that you can do!
drueowen 2 points 3y ago
It’s mostly up to the shift to make a good deployment. As a shift, I always try to keep my drive times under 50 - a goal of 45 usually - and to get there I have to. Deploy my partners well. So it’s usually my own fault if deployment doesn’t go well. Ask, checking in on baristas to make sure they’re doing well and are ready for whatever position you’ll have them in during peak.
matchawhoretobs 2 points 3y ago
i feel your pain. as a SSV, it’s irritating for my manager to come up to me with a complaint about times and blames DTR, its not always window persons’ fault. try talking to them about it and see if you guys can work a way to not get mad at you for doing your job, orrrr if they just... don’t put you on window
hopelovepeace33 2 points 3y ago
But the thing is that it’s not her fault, she’s not being slow it’s just with their being long lines that there is nothing that can be done about the wait time so she shouldn’t not be put at the window because one jerk of a manager is concerned about times during a time when DT times shouldn’t fucking matter at all. My store hasn’t been concerned about times since we shut the cafe down because once that happened along with partners started taking the 30 days & other stores closing my store became increasingly busy & then we became the only store opened within my district & it was non stop cars & the partners working never had a moment to breathe before having to say “hi welcome to Starbucks what can I get for you today” in as perky of a voice as possible.
matchawhoretobs 2 points 3y ago
No, I agree it’s not her fault! You’re right, window times shouldn’t matter a single bit, but for some fuck reason there are stores where managers still give a shit and will get on their SSV’s about window times (its fucking ridiculous). In her case, this particular shift she has to deal with about times while she’s on DTR in aggravating and stressful for everyone. She’s not going to be able to magically make her SSV stress themselves and everyone else around them about the window times. I was just trying to offer some advice to get at least a LITTLE bit of peace. If they’re gonna blame her and not like her performance on DTR, why put her there? She could just be put in another position..
hopelovepeace33 2 points 3y ago
You’re not wrong at all & honestly at this time with stores only having drive-thru only then they don’t need to be concerned about times. There is only so much that you can do when your position is to take cash & hands out drinks & if you’re waiting on drink from the baristas or if they mess up a drink that’s not your fault & if they have a question you should answer it for them as quickly as you can which I’m sure you do. Times shouldn’t be a point of concern for them & if they are I’m sorry that you’ve got to deal with that BS.
