I am Canadian and qualify to have my cat pay extended to June 15 as I am high risk. But I am still considering quitting, as my brother is a doctor who works in an infectious disease ward. He said working at Starbucks has a high risk to COVID exposure despite the measures Starbucks has taken to keep us safe. He said he would make the same recommendation to me even if I had no pre-exisiting conditions because of how debilitating COVID can be to those who get moderate to severe symptoms (and they are still learning about the long-term health effects of COVID in regard to the heart and kidneys).
My husband and I could cut back and go down to one income to make my quitting work. It would be tight, but better safe than sorry. I recognize others aren't as lucky to have that option...
Still I feel guilty for quitting, abandoning my team, etc. And I liked the job. The pandemic is forcing us to choose between our health and a pay check, and really pusing us to decide what level of risk we are comfortable with... again for those of us who are lucky enough to have the choice.
I can take the cat pay until June and reassess the situation then, as cases might go up again as we re-open the economy. And there is the possibility of a second-wave in the fall, which the very thought of causes me anxiety. So I feel guilty taking the cat pay until June, knowing there is a good possibility I could still quit in June... and there is likely someone out there who needs the job more than I do.
