Does the manager have final say over POTQ? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Yes, it is ultimately the managers decision. Sucks, I know. A similar situation happened at our store... a brand new shift got POQ (and the promotion) because they were best friends with the manager. Sucks because I know who most of the baristas voted for and it surely wasn’t her. It was a good way to kill moral and it showed the team that the only way to get ahead is to kiss ass.

Wow, that’s crappy. That is basically exactly what’s happening to us. We all voted for someone and they didn’t give it to them. They gave it to the new ass kissing ssv. We’re all really unhappy with the decision. Bummer. Thanks for the input.

There is a good ending to the story tho... that was a bad manager I had. She’s gone and we have a very supportive one now. Don’t forget about your other partners too... they’re what make this job awesome. Don’t let a popularity contest dull your shine. I got a bit salty and it really effected my mood! Stay positive partner ☺️

That’s good! I’m glad for y’all. We were all rooting for one of our newer partners to win because she’s been doing great! The way the mngr handled it left a bad taste in our mouth but we are all still happy with each other. We’re going to show the new partner appreciation our own way without the potq. I appreciate it!

It is really the manager picking someone. My SM even told us as so. They told us that "[we] don't vote, [we] suggest or nominate someone and they pick who is POTQ".
xandyrex 2 points 3y ago
I am just learning this today I guess. Been here a few years and I’ve never seen a mngr ignore everyone’s votes. Kinda unfortunate and pointless for us to vote if they’re going to do whatever they want anyway. Oh well, is what it is. (B.S)

they let us "vote" so it seems like we have opinions and matter to the company. as the recent training taught me "we are all united through the green apron" /s
xandyrex 1 points 3y ago
Not surprising. And yeah, new training and everything else has definitely opened some eyes around here. Partners leaving and asking lots of good questions.

It’s not really a vote though. It’s a nomination. You nominate a partner for POQ. It’s like nominating an actress for Grammy. Just because someone got nominated doesn’t mean they gonna win.
asocial_hermit 2 points 3y ago
I think it depends in how your SM pitches it to the store. like my store was told to submit our votes for POTQ so that colored our understanding of the process. That being said no one really cared who won, we all like each other and we all like the person that won, but it was more a thing where we felt our SM should have worded it better to us.

It’s not really a vote though. It’s a nomination. You nominate a partner for POQ. It’s like nominating an actress for Grammy. Just because someone got nominated doesn’t mean they gonna win. It’s up to the manager to decide who will win. And it’s the SMs job to make sure that the person who wins actually deserves it.

If everybody nominates Becky because everybody likes her (but she likes to call out and an average employee), but Rachel is very hard working, covers shifts often, and goes above and beyond (but only got 2 votes because she is quiet and partners don’t really vibe with her) and Becky wins because she got more votes, that’s unfair. Rachel deserves the win and it’s SMs job to make sure the partner who wins is the partner who deserves it based on their work and not popularity.

Well, in this case the mngr chose someone that is disrespectful to all other partners and an ass kisser to mngrs. We all “nominated” a new partner who has been doing really good, working hard, learned very quickly, worked at other stores while ours was closed, shows up on time. The whole deal. It’s just putting a damper on store spirits. Not about popularity, i dont care about that, it’s about doing the right thing and my mngr unfortunately did not. Just made it seem like if you kiss ass and treat pple like shit, you’ll get mngr approval.

Ask the SM why they chose that person. Maybe there is more behind it than you know.

Yes. The SM has the final say. Those things we fill out are nominations, not votes. The SM is supposed to take them into consideration, but they can choose anyone they want.

I think this just isn't a big enough deal to make that much of a fuss over since the winner only gets a pin and a $75 bonus. Unless there's a wide consensus among baristas from your store that the winner wasn't deserving. If the SM chose someone who'd be your 2nd or 3rd pick, who cares, if it's someone that the majority of the store thinks is unworthy then you should have another conversation to try to understand what the SM sees in that person.

We had a situation at my store were our SM asked me and another SSV who we thought should get the award because their was a three way tie. It seemed like our Sm already had a winner in mind but the SSV and I reasoned with her that one of the other partners deserved it more based on the improvements they had shown and how much they had stepped up during this crisis. The partner that we pick ended up getting it but it seems that the Sm told the person they wanted to win that the partner won the award because we decided. Thankfully she didn’t mind not winning and agreed with what we thought was the right call but it definitely seemed like our Sm wanted to start drama before she left for her new store.

As it was explained to me the purpose of having a manger choose the POTQ is to make sure it is someone who deserves it. Not saying this failed in your case but it doesn’t work like that at my store. My store manager said the purpose is so that if one person gets like 8 votes but the reasonings are “he always makes funny jokes about the customers” and “he always takes funny snaps and sends them to me from work” but someone else gets 2 votes with reasonings like “she always works so hard and puts so much effort into her job” and “she always makes sure to make all of us feel welcome and appreciated during our shift” then the manager is supposed to pick the person with the two votes with good reasonings. The purpose is to ensure it is someone who deserves it not just a popularity contest.

Yes, the SM chooses out of the nominations. To be honest, if your SM knows that a lot of your baristas and/or SSV's are friendly outside of work they might take that into consideration when choosing POTQ. A good SM will recognize clicks that form in-store and do what they can to balance them out to make the environment inclusive of everyone.
