“Making the situation right”(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by my_name_is_in_use123
Sorry guys but I need to rant 😂
Does anyone else have the situation right now where they have a customer that’s right off the bat just being rude and unreasonable to you because their app isn’t working and then expects us to reward their rudeness with free coffee to “make the situation right”?
I had this man come to my store today huffing and puffing because his app wasn’t working and hasn’t heard back from corporate yet. I tried to help him but he was insistent that he’d done EVERYTHING. Because of this he was wanting us to take his order at the door even though I repeatedly told him we cannot do that because we are trying to keep ourselves and others safe during this time. He kept going on and on about how he NEEDS his two cups a day and ranting about how ridiculous this all is and I agree that this sucks but it’s like people have never heard of making coffee at home or going to the grocery store and buying cold brew before.
One of our kind regulars ended up using his app to get the dude his peppermint almond milk mocha(seriously? That is a part of your mandatory cups of joe a day?😒) and the dude ended our nice conversation asking what my supervisors name was and saying he was “sorry” but he just needs to write about this to our DM because he’s been treated so badly by our store.
Generally I am ALL for making the situation right and having people leave my store with a smile but in these situations I just don’t see the reasoning to go the lengths to basically reward rude and entitled behavior. Anyone else feeling this?

I hate that customers expect to be given something for the smallest inconvenience. One time, I was DTO and a lady ordered a grande strawberry acai. I heard it, repeated it, got confirmation about the order so I put it through. When she gets to window, she's screaming about her drink to my partner at DTR and demanding to speak to the supervisor. She goes on a rant that we always get her order wrong and it's only our store. She then claims she ordered a trenta pink drink. And of course, she's already paid for the other beverage and has it in her hand. At this point, we're all a little upset. I go to the register refund her for the acai and charge for the pink drink with a smile and apology on my face. I reach for the other drink, dumping it in a swift action and let her know her correct drink is on its way. But she wanted to keep the acai obviously. She even told me "Shouldn't I keep it and get the other for free because you messed up". 😒😒 I just feels this happens more and more.

Oh hell no . If it was me I'd be petty about and be like well I didn't take your order wromg since I repeated back the order and you agreed to it ... so yeah... I'll tell them straight up . I cant stand customers anymore tbh. I'm nice to all customers but once they act up I no longer care :/

We were out of the bacon egg bites one time and this crabapple of a regular was like “shouldn’t my coffee be discounted since you don’t have the food that I want?” Ummm no?? That’s not how a discount works? I didn’t charge you for something we didn’t have soooo....that’ll be $4.95, Debra.
GiveMeCoffeeFreeze27 points3y ago
I had a customer tell me she should be compensated for her inconvenience because we didn’t have a cup she was looking for anymore. I don’t understand people’s reasoning and entitlement.

Our plugs are broken in the cafe and some guy demanded we give him a voucher for a free drink because he can't possibly be expected to drink his coffee when the plug socket isn't working. Like??? What????? How do those two things go together? When he asked what he was supposed to drink his coffee with now my supervisor said "your mouth"

I had a customer try and pull this today - he ordered a Venti iced americano, so I made a venti iced americano. He didn’t want any cream or sugar, sweet easier for me espresso and water you want you got it. He gets up to the window and LOSES IT that he ordered a cold brew with vanilla sweet cream. At first we think oh we just messed up pulling an order on POS since we’re ringing in on cafe register and then doing find order on DT to social distance our partners. But no he keeps yelling how we always get his order wrong and he wants to speak to the manager: well little does he know: at that very moment, the ASM, SM, DM, and the new regional manager are all in the store. I’ve never seen my window person look so happy and he’s like “well it just so happens we have all the store leadership here today - I’m sure they’d be willing to hear your complaint!” I’ve never seen a grown man-child accelerate so quickly out of a drive through

Ooh the one I had yesterday didn't send her mobile through, (we've been open this whole time with drive thru and accepting cash) and I said "oh maybe you sent it to the wrong store"
"oh no I made sure it was *blah & blah*"
"maybe you didn't hit checkout"
"I did three times" *then shows her phone.*
I look at her phone and it shows her order and checkout, so I click checkout and a pop up asking for her password. I didn't actually read her order and she sits there for like 3 minutes trying to get her password. Eventually we get a mobile order and it's not even the name she said and she's like "yup that's the one" in the end I don't feel slightly bad for keeping her at the window for 8 minutes
flappernapper696 points3y ago
We had a lady today that asked for her mobile (one we didn't get) so we were like sorry we don't have one under that name and instead of trying to check her phone she says "WeLl mY pHoNe saYs yOu dO!" So we're like okay yeah well get that right to ya, what was it?? And STILL instead of being nice she rudely tells us "a caramel crunch Frappuccino!". We were like "... and... what size??.." and rudely "ugh! LARGE" like B*** we can't see what you ordered.?!
perfecktenschlog16 points3y ago
well and my store is doing it so people can come pick up mobiles and if they don’t have a mobile we will help them at the register that one time ( while maintaining social distancing ) but after that we need them to mobile order and most people have been really good abt it. they’ll even be like “i didn’t mobile order but i have the app so i’ll just step outside and do that really fast”. i’m so sorry you’re dealing w stupid people :/
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]5 points3y ago
Thank you and I wish we could just let people in because I wouldn’t have to deal with these baboons any longer but I live in a hard hit state so we are still under pretty strict policies at the current time. Will be thankful when we can just go back to the normal rudeness 😂
Cyberbuilder15 points3y ago
My app wasn't working today too. The barista at my store took my order and was happy to help. I tipped well. People need to have reasonable expectations of technology that now has a incredibly large demand. I didn't expect anything for free. I expected to walk away empty handed because I didn't want to hand over my card. Lmao the barista asked for it and took the order. Man's a goat.
kukisanban13 points3y ago
Had a guy straight up toss the incorrect drink out onto the drive thru road once
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]8 points3y ago
I think I would explode if someone did that 😂🤯

the other day a healthcare worker came through and asked me at the speaker if teas were apart of the free coffee promotion and LITERALLY EVERY PARTNER heard me tell her that “no unfortunately teas arent apart of the promotion just a tall iced coffee or tall brewed coffee” and then she said “oh okay” like she understood me and still proceeded to order a grande tea anyways and then threw a fit at the window saying I told her that she could get it!! anyways she ended up paying for it after complaining but i literally had laid out multiple times what the promotion entailed...
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]6 points3y ago
This drives me nuts! I’ve also had people get mad when I tell them I can’t give them a free coffee just because their significant other is a first responder 😂
lizeken12 points3y ago
My manager would’ve given him a recovery card bc he’s a total pushover. License and corporate stores don’t run the Starbucks app. If corporate doesn’t respond to you then that’s their problem. I don’t see why that’s so hard for people to comprehend
ReneeZeLe11 points3y ago
Before this whole mess happened, we had both of our espresso machines go down right after peak. We had one lady who wanted a hot latte ask if she was gonna get the hot coffee she was getting instead for free since we didn't have what she wanted. We had to explain to her that it would be unfair to the other costumers that also weren't getting what they wanted, if we just gave it to her.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]11 points3y ago
Yeah because we can’t just start handing out five million free drinks every time someone was mildly annoyed 💁♀️
Michigoose9910 points3y ago
When ppl act this way I play dumb. "I'm sorry, it's store policy." If they want to escalate it to a SSV or SM or DM that's fine and that's their business. I just work here and that's the policy.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]6 points3y ago
That’s what I usually do XD my SSV has got my back and is not afraid to tell it how it is when the customer is being a punk 😊

We have one lady who started to come through every day when this COVID stuff started. We didn't catch on for the first few bays but after working window 3 days in a row I realized every day she would come back through the DT and claim her drink was wrong after she drank it... I asked to see her old drink stick to see where we went wrong and she would hand me an empty cup... Jesus take the venti cup from my hands I wanted to dump her "remake" in her lap. But I gave her the drink and told my manager who she was and her car etc. The next day she tries to pull the same crap. My manage was waiting for her. *que action sequence music* My manaver banned her from the store and the DM was in DT behind and asked about it and banned her from ALL the stores in her district. I hope Karen enjoys Dunkin

Hahaha that’s amazing!!!
reddskeleton9 points3y ago
I’m a customer and I can’t believe some of this stuff! Thanks for your self restraint!
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]7 points3y ago
Sounds like you’re a good sane person and customer so I thank you for that 🙌
reddskeleton2 points3y ago
I have a lot of respect for you baristas and have always wondered what you consider good customers and bad customers. So it was great to find this site.
Michigoose993 points3y ago
Most customers are very pleasant and nice and....I guess the word is sane. But the few who act crazy are the ones we remember at the end of a shift lol. I like most of our regulars and they're understanding if, say, we're out of something (I mean it happens) or there's a wait (gee, everyone had the same idea of getting coffee on the way to work!) I've had kids come through who are more mature and capable of dealing with frustration than grown-ass adults who think the world should revolve around them!
reddskeleton2 points3y ago
So true! I ran a Brownie troop and the moms were the only downside
Michigoose992 points3y ago
Former GS troop co-leader and Cookie Mom here. Truth. 🙌
chinfox9 points3y ago
reward them with kindness and decaf.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]6 points3y ago
Hahaha yes!! To bad I wasn’t on bar today :P😂

Someone came in a couple days ago (licensed store) going on and on to my coworker about how the people at the other store said she couldn’t get her drink she mobile ordered and can we honor her purchase and possibly refund her? What? After explaining to her that no, we can’t, she goes into this big long tangent about “I’m not gonna sit twenty minutes in a drive thru line to get a drink i already ordered” Thanks karen
spicypotatogurl5 points3y ago
Over the past 2 weeks, 2 different men have used our drive thru as a bathroom 🙃
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]6 points3y ago
Noooooooo 🤢🙈
charliechapline3 points3y ago
I work in a very small cafe only store. We stop brewing blonde at 11 and dark at 1. We only ever do pour over decaf because no one ever ask for it. Anyways about a year ago, one chick came in 10 minutes before close and asked for a decaf. I gave my same line “we don’t currently have it brewed but i can do a pour over which takes about 3-5 minutes blah blah blah.” She said that’s fine and then asks if she gets a discount and i said for what? She insinuates she gets a discount for us not having decaf ready, I just stare at her and give her a cup discount (10 cents off). She gave me a horrid stare but whatever. The funny thing is, if I had to guess she was in her mid 20’s, I swear Karen’s are getting younger everyday.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]2 points3y ago
Haha or it’s a new brand of Karen! like a Stacy 😂
YellowSphinx3 points3y ago
One time a lady walked into my Starbucks two minutes before we closed and demanded a free drink because we were out of things that she wanted. I’m closing in two minutes of course I don’t have everything in stock rn. so I gave her 10¢ off her drink and she was pissed it wasn’t free. You don’t get to decide how much you pay for your drink 🤷♀️ I do. No discussion.
naivebigs2 points3y ago
we had a guy come in through the drive thru today about 10 minutes before close, and he said he ordered a drink from another store but it was made wrong, so i said “okay we can remake it for you... what was it?” and he says “it’s a tall decaf pour over with almond milk”. all of my coworkers were so annoyed and wanted to give him an americano but i said by the time he gets to the window it would be ready anyways since we were pretty busy. so we make his pour over and i ask if he wants a stopper and he says “finally! i thought u forgot about me” to which i didn’t really reply because it was a bit rude and i wanted him to leave so i could finish cleaning the store. then he claims that i ‘huffed’ at him and i said “sir i did no such thing, but have a great day” and i closed the window. anyways, a minute passes and he comes back to the drive thru and says that we forgot almond milk in his pour over. so i say “so sorry about that we can give you some on the side!” and he says “no thank you, i’d like a new pour over” ......... now we close in less than 5 minutes so i say “are you sure i can’t give you some on the side since i just made this coffee for you?” and he says “no i want a new one, YOU forgot the milk and YOURE supposed to make the moment right”. so i pull him over and make an americano because i’m pissed and i bring it to his car out front and before he leaves he says “that’s what you get for huffing at me!” and speeds off. i was seething. end of rant. people that abuse the system really rattle my nerves and i know i shouldn’t get too upset about a few jerks out there but damn, you’d think during a pandemic people would have bigger problems....
