Persistent Sexual Harassment from a regular. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ReEliseYT
So we have a regular that makes incredibly inappropriate and sexually explicit things to literally all the girls who work at my store. Every time he comes in he has some horrible shit to say to us.

I’ve complained about this to my shifts, ASM, GM, and DM multiple times. Hell he has harassed almost all of the shifts, the ASM and the GM. However they always say theirs nothing they can do. It’s even more fucked up that some of the people he usually harasses are minors.

I’m just so fucking tiered of his shit, yet it seems that there is nothing I can do. It seems we care more about 1 regular than 75% of our stores staff. Yea Starbucks is better than a lot of company’s to work for but fuck me if this isn’t frustrating as hell.

The first thing the shifts should be doing is filing an incident report every time it happens. He should be banned from the store
amazing_redhead 76 points 3y ago
Baristas are also able to file incident reports! It wouldn't hurt to have your own record to build a case against him for when the time comes to take action
WildCaterwaul 34 points 3y ago
While doing this, be specific as possible. Vague phrasing is your enemy.
mawiiee228 52 points 3y ago
Had that happened to my old starbucks. Every single time something happened we let the manager know and he would give a warning to the guy.

We also made a file about it with all the dates and time of things that happened, to who and so when we decided to finally kick him out, he couldn't say we were not fair to him and we had proof to give to corporate.

Your GM and DM are right, they can't do anything if they don't have a strong enough case as the guy can call for lawsuit (which our guy did, saying we gave him unfair treatment and bullying him)

For us, he used to call corporate every single time something happened and they would give him a gift card because we were "treating him so poorly" and he would come to us and praise himself for it. He would touches the girl's hand when we gave him his coffee, make sexual remark to a 16 yo partner even if he knew she was 16, would walk outside at closing hours and check regularly inside the building and wait at the backdoor when we went to the trash container. He asked me where I live in front of my SL.

At the end of the day, know that if you don't feel safe to serve him, you can request someone else to serve him for you. You shouldnt feel bad about doing so, your security and well-being comes first.

Are your shifts not writing up incident reports? There absolutely is plenty they can do. My SM has thrown the ban hammer at people for this type of shit right quick. The only regular we can't do anything about is this older guy that sits and oggles. They say they can't do anything because he hasn't said anything or done anything, just looks. I fucking hate that guy. Something about what he does is worse than if he were to make a comment.

I'll see if we can make that work. I think that part of the difficulty is that he's a person of color. We're a store in Philadelphia close to the one that had that huge controversy a couple years ago. People still mistake us for that store. The optics of kicking out a person of color who is "just sitting" probably aren't great.

ehhh, don't use that backwards "colored person" euphemism...
grunkle_spooky 1 points 3y ago
It's not a euphemism? Saying person of color is completely different than "colored person."
hmidwop 1 points 3y ago
Yes we have one of those guys too. Asks for water a lot

Throw hot ass coffee in that f*ckers face

Sorry this is happening to you and your team.
Any time you report an incident to ANYONE write it down on a piece of paper and throw it in your bag with the person, the date and the time of day. If you witness it happening to someone else write it down. Keep a detail log of when these situations happen and what was said. If you are reporting a situation up and nothing is continuing to happen to change an environment where you feel unsafe or at risk of being unsafe you take it a step forward. It sounds like either the gm is Ill-equipped to handle the situation on the front lines and the dm is not doing anything of substantial value(they usually don’t unless there hand is forced), you call the PARTNER CONTACT CENTER. The number is in the front of the big daily records book in all stores as well as on the partner hub. Call them and if you have a detailed log of each event and what was either done or not done they can take actionable steps to force the DM/sm to “no trespass” a customer. Which is something starbucks does with local police municipalities for a customer that is being violent, disrespectful, harassing or just an asshole all the time. It’s rare that it happens but from the sound of what you wrote it seems like multiple partners can validate this shitbag deserves the boot and a paper trail can make people who would normally not do anything or shrug it off, light a fire under their ass. Good luck.
nibox72 9 points 3y ago
Agreed. Write down every incident so you have a record of misconduct.
I am sorry none of your supervisors are supporting your team. No one should feel unsafe. If your DM refuses to do anything I would take it to your RM. this situation is unacceptable

Why haven’t you just looked at this chucklefuck and straight up say. Don’t talk to me that way. The idea that some Starbucks don’t let their staff stand up for themselves hurts me. I would never let that slide at mine. I would never let anyone talk to my baristas that way. my manager didn’t have a spine so he would run from confrontation. but like...no..
lilBalzac 10 points 3y ago
So sorry this is happening. Do you have any friendly police officer customers that might enjoy bracing this joker?
“Can I see some some ID sir? Lot of the Neighbors have been reporting a guy lurking around and bothering kids. You fit the description. We have your name now if we get any reports. Have a nice day sir.”
thedeadwillwalk 9 points 3y ago
My last DM banned a guy from our store for even less extreme behavior than this. You're not being supported.

Shift Supervisor Here!

In my district we have a partners first policy when it comes to things like this. When it comes to the safety and security of our partners there are non negotiables and sexual harassment is one of them. Here's the process I've been taught for these situations.

1. Ask the customer to stop
Make statements such as "We do not appreciate the way you are speaking to my partner", "the comments you are making are inappropriate", and then from there we would ask the following "I would like to ask you to leave our store for the day. You may return tomorrow if you can treat our partners with respect"

2. File an incident report for every conversation
We always file reports, even if it's something like asking a customer not to play loud music in the lobby. A paper trail is important and protects us as partners, the store, and in extreme cases the company as a whole.

3. In extreme cases we file for a trespass
If the person is breaking the law then we can contact the police after our third conversation rule if they are breaking the third place. This goes for not only these comments (these are more of a 1 strike rule) but for things like noise, panhandling, and smoking on the patio. If it threatens the safety and security of our partners and customers then we maintain that. Although calling the police is never the goal and we try to avoid it at all costs. I should also state we are not allowed to say we want to trespass someone. If a police officer asks we cannot say yes however we can say "I am not allowed to say yes" but ultimately it is the officers choice. If the officer chooses not to it can still happen but it has to be done through Starbucks and can take weeks.

My biggest recommendations for a barista is to file incident reports every time it happens. Encourage your fellow baristas to file one anytime they experience it as well. You can find the tab on the iPad
lewabwee 3 points 3y ago
Someone up top is probably lying to your bosses. But yeah you can ban someone for ruining the third place experience through misogynistic or racist behavior. This was even literally part of training at one point.

You have to ask him to stop first but if he doesn’t you can ask him to leave. Then if he doesn’t leave call the cops. Dude has no right to be there though.
boofmacaroni 3 points 3y ago
We have one of these too - he asked me for my address, and would sit in the cafe for 5+ hours at a time just drinking a pike and staring at underage girls. Fucking gross. Our store also did nothing.
dzToffeeNuts 3 points 3y ago
Call pcc
bompwa 3 points 3y ago
Wait, just to clarify, I didn't see any mention of a SM...at my first store, there were two individuals who my SM asked to not return based on their behavior
Saoirse_Says 3 points 3y ago
There was a similar problem at my store too. I didn't have to take the brunt of anything during my tenure, but I really feel for you and those who did/do. I wish I could provide you useful advice but can only really say that you really deserve better than this.
NOTcreative- 3 points 3y ago
You should contact your DM or PRSC, there are things we can do about it. Your manager just may not have the resources to know.
lebrellj 2 points 3y ago
Fuck that shit up and file a comaint every time. Holy shit is this illegal. Sexual harrassment in the work place is illegal. Yout managers are doing something illegal by ignoring someone who is sexually harrassing their staff. They can and should do something because this person has no sense of boundries and, when illegal behavior goes unchecked, it rarely does anythong but get worse.

Call the ethics hotline and file a complaint.
"If you are a store partner, call (888) SBUX-411 (7289-411). You can even remain anonymous."
DeliOck 2 points 3y ago
take off ur apron, hat and clock out for ur break and smoke his ass
colonade17 2 points 3y ago
The shifts should file an incident report every time this happens, and make sure to include details so that there's a clear and documented pattern that it's this same guy every time.

The shifts can also ask him to stop or leave, and should any time he has disruptive or abusive behavior. If your GM and DM still don't want to do anything call partner resources or ethics and compliance.
DorkusMalorkusXB 1 points 3y ago
I cannot stress the importance of incident reports. One needs to leave a paper trail. With proper documentation, SM and DM cannot ignore.
skeletonproteinshake 1 points 3y ago
we have a regular who comes in and does the same shit it’s so gross (he’s like 60)
hopelovepeace33 1 points 3y ago
There is something they could do they just choose not to. There is a guy who comes through my store & he’s an elderly guy and when we tell him his total he goes 5.09 your very fine & to me that doesn’t bother me but I had a partner get upset about it & I was like well ask the customer to not say it then if it bothers you or say something to the SM and have him handle it as well. Now my situation at my store is nothing close to anything you’re describing but I would definitely file and incident report & also call corporate & let them know about this customer & keep a record of every time this guy comes through and makes comments & like another person said be very specific about everything this guy says because if your shifts, SM, and DM won’t do anything then you and all the girls need to go above them.
libbythebard 1 points 3y ago
we had a delivery guy making suggestive and inappropriate advances towards one of my shifts and she kept complaining until they finally moved him to a different route so he can harass someone else
fallinginnow 1 points 3y ago
Something I always tell my coworkers with things like this is don’t tolerate it, customer service doesnt matter when youre being literally harassed, dont show respect anything to him, dont serve him if he acts like that.Dont let customers walk over you and treat you like shit or sexualize you just because of “customer connections”, those dont matter when its your life and privacy and safety on the line.

File an incident report. It’s right in the iPad.
cairishgirl 1 points 3y ago
Report every incident and build a case against him. This can help get him eventually banned.
