I work at an extremely busy DT starbucks. We were the only starbucks open during the cafe closures since we are the only DT in town. We were doing a mobile order pick up station where we put our foot down to only mobile order pick ups and no placing orders at the door. However, once all the cafe stores opened for mobile order, SMs started pushing for us to accept orders at the mobile order pick up door to increase their sales. So now my DM says it’s mandatory for every store including mine to accept customers placing orders at the door, which includes running back and forth from the door to the reg, handling their cards and money. Most of these customers are not even wearing masks. I feel as if my safety is being compromised in order for stores to make more money. My SSV threatened to write me up when I told customers they needed to go through the drive thru or place a mobile order. I know Starbucks as a whole says that in order to protect our customers and our partners we aren’t accepting orders at the door so I’m not sure what to do. All the SSVs and my SM don’t see a problem with it. Do I have grounds to reach out to parter services?
TLDR; my store is accepting customers placing orders at the door. I feel unsafe and don’t know what to do.

I work in a cafe store and we’re being forced to do the same thing despite being told we would be “mobile order only. we all feel uncomfortable doing it but our manager won’t listen to us and is forcing us to do it anyways so that way we can get more customers in and our numbers will look better. for a company that’s preaching safety it’s sad that we all feel so unsafe!

Go to partner services! My manager is REFUSING to take any orders at the door no matter what. You should not be forced especially if you’re feeling uncomfortable.
spark90816 points3y ago
Absolutely! Starbucks should be held up to their standards by ensuring their partners safety! I called in sick when they refused to let me wear gloves back when this started stating that it was to "prevent the public from panicking" like Seriously?.. you as a company are going to choose letting the public be ignorant of a critical health issue over letting your employees feel safe when they come to work? This is just another one of those situations. I would reach out to partner services and let them know that you don't feel safe working in your store because that's ridiculous. You shouldn't have to deal with the bumbling public that's too ignorant to put a mask on their face. It's common sense at this point.

Today we had an old man get so mad he couldn’t order at the door- he wasn’t wearing a mask and he was mad that he couldn’t hear the partner standing three feet from him well, so he tried to insist she take HER mask off so he could hear better. These are the kinds of people trying to order at our store’s door. It’s wild. Do they just not read the news? Do they think they’re invulnerable to harm?
You deserve to feel safe at work.

While I do agree with most everyone in this post, I do get why they didn’t want you to wear gloves. Not because I don’t think safety is the number one priority, but because if your following basic food service standards then not wearing gloves wouldn’t make a difference. Are hand are expected to be clean at all times not just for corna but because of all germs that could contaminate the drinks, so as long as you wash your hands often, especially before and after touching your face, then you should be in the clear (not accounting for non-hand related ways of catching it of course)

What state are you in? My store is completely dead, even if we accept at the door orders, it would only increase sales by maybe 50 bucks. I happily tell people they gotta order online otherwise we're just gonna have a staring contest

I’m in a big city in CA. My friends who are partners at other cafe stores say that their sales did increase with in person orders, but they agree what’s the point of even having the cafe lobby closed if customers are ordering at the door? At my DT store it’s just people who are too impatient to wait in the long drive lines and then demand to order at the door. It’s frustrating either way.

I’m in Cali too and I’ve noticed pretty much every store I’ve seen open has massive lines
bootrick1 points3y ago
Yeah, you aren't having anyone walk up. They drive to the store and don't want to wait in line
qwasyas1 points3y ago
My god. I would kill to work at a dead store. I love a good staring contest.

That’s crazy! Our district isn’t even opening the doors for mobile order pickups unless it’s front line workers like police and healthcare workers
kkaylakaylaa2 points3y ago
Our door stays locked all day, we take mobiles out with everything they need and leave them on a table. They just have to call the store first. Most people are still going through our DT for mobiles.

I work in a cafe only store and we just reopened this Monday for mobile order only. I come into work today and BAM now we’re accepting cash too. I feel super uncomfortable handling people’s cash. If anything do card only because then they have to touch the card machine and we don’t have to touch their card. Idk it’s just frustrating

Seems to be a common theme here. Store I work at opened back up May 4th as mobile order/ Uber only. Within 2 days my manager was taking cards and cash at the door and encouraging us to do the same. 3 days in the manager tells us that we are no longer requiring customers to wear facial coverings while coming up to the hand off door and that we will also be setting up a POS at the door with no shield or guard. So now we’re not asking the customers to wear facial coverings while being face to face with them without any shield or guard one week in. We’ve all expressed our extreme discomfort with the situation and frankly, she does not care. She says we have the option to be homeless or work right now and we should be happy we get to work. I feel really forced against my will here because we are. I’ve got no clue what to do but I’m really frustrated that we are being used in the way we are. We are no less than the customers, we deserve our safety equally.

My district has just begun mop pick up at the door and it's not even all of us. Some are still closed , 1 is trying delivery only. My store is considering mop pick up at the door starting in june just to help the DT line.

Call the ethics hotline and file a complaint. I included the number below. That is awful and you should not be requored to work on an unsafe environment.
"If you are a store partner, call (888) SBUX-411 (7289-411). You can even remain anonymous."
qwasyas1 points3y ago
First off. Tell your SSV to suck a dick because we have LITERALLY no authority to write someone up. We essentially don’t any authority in general.
At a DT store myself, we have been strict at only having drive thru and mobile orders pick up. But my store has always kept our doors locked, we don’t let anyone in.
If a car parks, a partner walks out and asks their mobile name. If they are a walk up and wants to place an order, we straight up tell them to get in our long ass DT line or to download the app and place an order. Then I smile and ask what name should I look for when the order comes through.
I’m sorry that all your higher up are disregarding Starbucks safety and not following the guidelines that have literally been set up for this kind of shit.
You are not out of line for feeling unsafe and not wanting to do what they are asking. Starbucks is supposed to be fairly accommodating, tell them you’re not comfortable with walk ups and have someone else be in charge of it.

We opened on Monday and were told from the beginning that we had to accept cash and card payments. I'd say we're about 40% mobile orders and 60% walk-ups. And none of our partners (10 of us remaining) seem to care or feel unsafe. Most of them take their masks off all the time and barely wash their hands. And its not at all possible to keep 6 feet from each other behind the counter. Nowhere near safe!

I work at a drive through only store and never have I been more thankful!
SteampoweredClock1 points3y ago
We have a one time policy. If they didn't know we were mobile order only, we'll take their order this one time and write it in the book. Next time they need to use mobile
