several times today i had people pull up to the speaker and wait like... 5 seconds before just ordering when i havent had a chance to greet them and everytime it happens i wish i could tell them to chill the frick out but the most passive aggressive i can be is “thank you for waiting so patiently for me what can i get started for you today??” just so they have to repeat what they said like i dont understand how people have become more impatient (also our line was long they werent going anywhere anyways...) anyways tell me ur recent DT horror stories!!

Don't take it personally! They really think that someone is assigned to just take orders at the speaker. They don't realize that you are multi-tasking. I like your response. Just remind yourself that they think you are sitting there waiting for their order. They don't understand how busy you really are.

i normally dont take it personally but the first time it happened the lady was so mad at me for not being able to take her order right on time?? which was only because i was finishing washing my hands so like lol. and like obviously if i do keep people waiting i apologize profusely bc i do feel bad, but id rather have someone say “hello???” in my speaker then just start ordering because then ill probably miss something and they’ll be even more angry 🙄

EDIT: today was just a v long day with lots of upsetting things happening and this was just a cherry on top normally i have more patience lol

I used to work at in n out and one of our rules was to ALWAYS greet customers who pulled up to the speaker box IMMEDIATELY even if it’s just to say “Hi i’ll be right with you!” i always thought it was annoying but sometimes it helps and then i use the same response as you “Thank you so much for waiting! Now what can i get started for you” because i feel like thanking them for patience rather than apologizing for the wait makes them view the situation differently? But it is the WORSt when you say you’ll be right with them and people just spit out their order anyway. one of my top pet peeeves

yeah i try to do that but sometimes i cant touch my lil speaker button in time so at that point i just try to get it done faster so i can just take their order!!

I personally ALWAYS check the cameras before I say anything, even if it’s just a “thank you for coming to Starbucks. We’ll be with you in just a minute.” message. Many times cars will have their windows still up and they will hear you say something while they’re rolling down the windows but not know what you said, so they start ordering because they don’t understand. I’m the only person in my store who does that and as far as I can tell, I’m the only person who doesn’t have cars ordering right away
