First responder Rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by smaidit
Sorry for misspelling or format I’m on mobile and on my ten right now but

Anyone else having a problem with people coming in claiming they are a first responder when it’s obvious they aren’t? We are a MOP only store and every responder comes in uniform or show ID without us even asking. However today when I was greeting I had 3 older people come in claiming they were first responders and demanded a coffee. One of them came in and just said “venti iced coffee”. When I asked if they placed a mobile order they said no. When I told them that they have to place an order through the phone they said “I’m a healthcare worker why should I do that” I was kinda shocked and I was like oh okay do you have your ID and they said “I’m off today why would I have that” I told the bar person to make it but I told them next time they can only get a tall. Maybe I was wrong asking for proof but how are you going to come in and be so rude like that? And they weren’t the first person today to demand a coffee and not seem like they were actually a first responder. I don’t want to be the type to judge or assume but I really did not think any of them were actual first responders. I told my shift and she said she would look out for them but it just gets me angry because why are you lying to get a free coffee? Or pretending to be someone you’re not? Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem?

we had a car come through drive with two girls in it and one asked about the free coffee for nurses and we were like yeah we’re doing that, and all of us on headsets heard the other girl in the car giggling and saying “you’re not even a nurse”, so yes, people are definitely lying about it for free coffee. the couple of people i gave it to yesterday didn’t say anything until they pulled up to the window and showed me their ID’s, which i really appreciated

I appreciate it too when they show me without asking! I just like the genuineness

My Starbucks is close to a cvs and I guess some of them lied saying they are front line and told their coworkers so they would come through and ask for a cvs employee discount. i think it’s kinda up to each store on how the go about the discount if you or your store think asking for ID for anyone who you suspect is lying then that’s okay! I don’t think you did anything wrong at all

thank you! we are two blocks away from a hospital that has been taking covid patients since the start and so we have first responders come in a lot and usually have scrubs on or something.

My store doesn’t check IDs for it but we are strict about the fact it’s only for tall coffees

Uh...no. Ask for ID every time. I don’t care who says what in the stores I’ve been working in recently, if they can’t prove their employment, do not give them free drinks. It’s just asinine and people will continue do these things because you let them.

i just read on some info in my store today that we’re only giving out free coffee to responders that are in uniform for this reason exactly

I really wish we weren’t doing this. I mean no disrespect to healthcare workers of course but some of them are so rude and demanding and absolutely don’t deserve it

My sm says that if people know about the promotion, give them the coffee.
I always ask for id either way. I’m on DTR most of the time and don’t have a headset so when the discount comes up on the screen, I’m just like “can I see your id?” And I’ve had a couple of people be like, didn’t they already put the discount? And I just say, “no, they just put it as a name to let me know, but I do it here, verifying that I saw your id, sorry.” Honestly, the people that get butthurt are the ones that never have an id. I just ask for a name and say that if they can bring their of next time so we can make note of today’s visit. I have never met a first responder that doesn’t carry some form of badge/id stating they’re first responders, in the 10 years of hospitality industry. So I don’t care wasting an extra 30 seconds to lecture someone trying to take advantage, and impersonate, frontline workers just for a free coffee. I know people talk to each other about whether a store asks for id or not. I’ve heard it at grocery stores, banks, etc.

I hate that because my SM is the same way! If someone is causing trouble or knows about a promo she says l just give it to them. And you’re right! I have never met a first responder that didn’t have proof. I just didn’t want to cause trouble because we are a high risk store and have had people threaten/throw things at me and didn’t want anyone to get crazy over a venti iced coffee :/

I don’t know if it’s only my store, but people have gotten a lot ruder since this whole pandemic started, and I just didn’t even think that was possible. Like what is going on..?
smaidit [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I think it’s because people are so stressed and freaked out and so instead of reacting with compassion they react with fear and anger :/

Honestly, I get that. I really do, but like relax, people. It’s just coffee, you’re already stuck in line.. like listen to some rock, some 80s, or a podcast and chill out. I’m so disappointed to see that this has become the new normal way to treat others. It’s so horrifying at times.
