Covid-19 Partner Tips? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by anonstarbies
Hi all!

I became a partner the same week we changed to a Drive Thru only model, and then had to take catastrophe pay as my significant other is high risk, and we live together. I just came back on the 6th, and It feels like I’m brand new again. I didn’t get a chance to train in all areas before I went on leave, and now with the perpetual business of my store’s location, it is difficult to learn on my feet.

Do any of you guys have any tips or tricks for multitasking on DTW/DTO, and/or any tricks for memorizing drink recipes faster—and sequencing?

My partners are all helpful, but because of our business, its difficult for them to teach me things on the fly when the line is wrapping around our building.

Any and all help is appreciated!

If you’re on DTW, you’re planted, so just focus on taking payment, handing out items, and connecting with customers! I usually stick to the basics: how your (fill in whatever day it is) going so far? Have any fun plans for today or are you just hanging out? Etc.

DTO: obviously take orders, and try to do it with an excited tone! It seriously helps to make you and the customer and other partners feel better. I can honestly feel a difference between when someone upbeat is on dto and someone ~boring~ is on dto. While you’re taking orders or between orders, help get the coming orders set up in sequence for the window partner. Organize the drinks and food so that you can slide the next car over to the window so it’s ready as soon as they pull up. If you have to get your own warming, I’ll usually go after I finish one order, then ask the next car if I can get them started with anything to eat. If they want food, I’ll throw it in the oven while I’m there (after saying “great! Give me one moment to get that started for you right now!”) and then when I finish getting all of that squared away I’ll get their drink order while I’m walking back to the computer. Honestly, dto is stressful but doesn’t have to be difficult. Find your vibe and run with it. You’ll get there.

Drink recipes: ask questions. Read the recipe cards. There are patterns for all the shots, syrups, etc. It will only take a little bit until you recognize and know them fully, and you’ll end up making them without even thinking of all the things you have to remember.

All in all, you can do it. It seems overwhelming at first but it isn’t forever. Your partners will give you grace because you’re new. Take every opportunity to learn and never feel like you’re asking too many questions. Everyone felt the same way when they started!!

Thank you for the feedback!

I feel very confident on DTW because making connections is why I wanted to be a partner with starbucks. Because most things are confined to DT these days, it’s made taking orders AND processing payments/making connections more difficult. Finding that groove when I’m doing both so far has been the most challenging

I haven’t had a lot of downtime to look at recipe cards, but I know they exist online, so I’ll start looking at those before my shifts and on my days off.

Hopefully as things with this pandemic slow down a little, I’ll be able to observe my partners a little bit more to watch for their patterns and see how they balance things with a little more ease

I know things take time and that I’ll get there—I’m confident of that 😌
