The meetings (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Peebles46
Today we had a store meeting (half at noon, the other half of partners are doing it at 2:30) to talk about possibly opening café for grab-and-go. We listening to the guided meditation and then that creepy interview. Does anyone think it was a little cult-y to call us a beacon of hope/light in the darkness?
We all found it kind of weird.

“Partners can come together and do anything!... except unionize...”

I found it more of a blatant two-birds-with-one-stone situation than cult-like; reinforce service standards and HR standards together while making an attempt at putting us all at ease.

However, in Canada we got all our messages from Lori instead of Rossann, so maybe it comes down to where you’re located. The meditation was still dumb as all hell however.

Also, what was y’all’s creepy interview? We didn’t get a creepy interview lol

We got a message from I guess Lori? I’m in Canada, just south of ottawa. And she was talking to someone else, another woman, about upholding the values of Starbucks. That’s where the “beacon of hope” came in.

Ah, our SM just skipped through the inter-part dialogue. Then again, we have a pretty chill SM who doesn’t take herself or corporate garbage too seriously
Peebles46 [OP] 3 points 3y ago
My SM is pretty cool but our DM has very... skewed morals when it comes to the company. Everything has to be done by the book. She would have skipped over it if she didn’t think the DM were testing her or something.

The meditation part was super awkward! Especially the part where they tell us to picture someone we love & then it ends with picture the customer you miss the missed or something like that. It was all a little weird & cultish sounding lol. I know it was more for making partners who’s stores closed or took the 30 days to feel a little more comfortable & being empathetic to one another which is really good, but the store I worked at never closed down even though a good amount of our partners took the 30 days & we also had amazing borrowed partners come to our store to help out who’s stores closed & wanted to work. The meeting was good for the reason that it gave re-opening stores and returning partners a glimpse into the precarious that were being taken by the company but the meditation part was just totally awkward 😂🤣

I just couldn’t comprehend the interview part either. That, paired with the meditation was just creepy. I dunno. Being a “beacon of hope” is kind of like calling us “heroes” and “essential”. I’m just tryna pay for school lol
hopelovepeace33 6 points 3y ago
Lol yea the “beacon of hope” was a little strange but I can see where some people could see it that way cause they could view it as a way of things getting to normal in a way. Also technically since we have food we’re considered “essential” but other than that serving a bunch of Karen’s their vanilla lattes & pink drinks we aren’t really all that essential 😂

Also same, I’m just trying to make money to pay my bills until I can finish school & get a job in a career where I don’t have to deal with customers 😂

Definitely had mind control vibes

It’s just the Starbucks “kool-aid.” To try to ease minds and remind everyone why they started working for the company to help ensure that they’ll say. It’s definitely a little cringe, but I do believe Starbucks is doing a better job for their employees right now than a lot of other places

TRUTH

I did my best to kinda go along, our staff is small and we’ve been mostly in good spirits about returning so we did joke around a bit but tried to go along with it and turn it into something valuable for our team. I will say when they got to the part about thinking about loved ones and yadada and then “now think of a customer” I let out an audible “AH!” as a joke but I think it was fine with everybody they laughed LOL

Beacons of hope and heroes who don’t deserve to keep their $3 raise
ReEliseYT 1 points 3y ago
Is this another round of that meditation ‘picture the customer as someone you love unconditionally’? It was bad enough the first time we had it please tell me they aren’t doing it again
Peebles46 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
We had that one, and I hope there aren’t more
ReEliseYT 1 points 3y ago
Me to we went through it when we opened the store at the beginning of May and I so hope we don’t have to do it again for opening up the cafe. We have a drive through and I have no idea why that isn’t enough for people. I’m not sure if I could take another meditation session.
Peebles46 [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I’m thinking it was the same one. We were supposed to do it when we opened the DT back up but we did it pretty quickly.

i don’t think it’s the intention at all to be culty. if you’ve tried meditation by yourself it makes a little bit more sense why they do it in the groups. it’s to clear everyone’s mind and bring them a sense of peace and clarity before discussing the day’s events. i think they genuinely care about their partners mental health for one reason or another.

It wasn’t the meditation that was culty, it was a dialogue we listened to that used language like “beacon of hope” and “shining light in the darkness”. I understand that we are a big part of the communities in which our stores are built, and I love the support we’ve received from corporate, but why not just tell it like it is? We’re in a pandemic. People need some normalcy. We can provide that normalcy. We are not a shining beacon.
perfecktenschlog 2 points 3y ago
and i completely agree w that. a lot of places need to stop sugar coating it and just be upfront w what’s going on and everything so i feel you there. and no we definitely aren’t a shining beacon but i know we are definitely one of the only normal things in people’s lives anymore which is something special in and of itself so i get the idea of what they’re saying but it is phrased really weird for sure.
hopelovepeace33 4 points 3y ago
No ones saying they don’t care because we know that they do especially after what they offered partners, it was just a little weird. Now if I had been a person who had done meditation previously then it would of been a little less weird, but it also didn’t help that I had a goofy ass co-worker making dumb faces at me as well as trying not to burst into laughter as well 😂🤣
