"how does everyone feel about opening up the lobby?" (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by millennialcandy
PISSED.

I can't be the only one pissed off about the recent training over opening up rn. Why was I told to equate my customers to my loved ones??? Yeah, I get empathizing with them but I'm sorry, if my loved ones treat me like garbage I can tell them to knock it off and not worry about being fired.

We're doing this for what? To bring normalcy to people's lives? There's nothing normal about this situation.

My DM was complaining about sales like...girl we know sales are down, isn't that a good thing??? It means people are staying home????? Am I supposed to risk my life and my loved ones lives for your fucking bottom line???? Who cares about -20% in sales when so many people are getting sick and dying??

Your third place is about to look like a graveyard my guy, but hey, you'll get your sales, right?

WTF

I'm pissed and I've been pissed since training last night.

'we care about our partners and customers'

no. You care about your fat fucking wallets. Don't lie to us.

I can't lie to the customers anymore about this. I'm not going to pretend like opening up our lobby for indoor seating is cool, not going to pretend to be happy about it. Someone needs to tell them that it's a bad idea. Yes, I want to see our regulars again they're pretty cool but I don't want them to come in. Stay home and stay alive ffs, your latte isn't worth it.

Anyway, if I get fired for telling people the truth when they ask if I'm happy the lobby has opened up, I'll make an update lol.

EDIT: Our store is now opening the lobby whenever Starbucks tells us to, not any earlier. At least for now. A lot of you guys have talked about striking, unionizing, and petitioning. I think it's important to exercise our rights, especially right now. They don't care what happens to us as long as their pockets are padded.
rachelsmall 212 points 3y ago
I’m irked that we’re probably losing our service pay this time for good. If face masks are necessary to protect the health of our non-mask wearing customers, we deserve that extra pay increase.
millennialcandy [OP] 76 points 3y ago
I get why we can't require customers to wear masks, (how would they drink their lattes?) but you're right, if we're to be put at risk because they won't wear masks then we need that extra pay. Honestly, I was so mad about other things I didn't even hear them talk about service pay at the meeting--hell maybe they didn't idk.
pleasesurpriseme 51 points 3y ago
They can drink their stuff as they pull out of the drive through or walk back to their cars. Honestly. If they’re within six feet of us I think they should be wearing masks.
rachelsmall 39 points 3y ago
They can wear the masks for the five seconds they’re interacting with us in my opinion. I have so many first responders and hospital workers coming through for their free drink, and not a single one is bothering to wear a mask.

They haven’t mentioned extending it this time, and if they’re removing paid leave, except for child care and specific criteria, it’s doubtful they’ll extend again. Either they should take a page from Walmart and give us monthly bonuses or toss us the three dollars extra from the comfort of their home offices 🤦‍♀️

To keep hazard pay through the pandemic
thebetawolf21 10 points 3y ago
All partners should be signing this. Sadly many are either not informed or afraid to speak up or take action or are complacent (a lot of the partners at my store definitely fall into some or all of these categories)
rachelsmall 7 points 3y ago
Already signed before!

Thank you for sharing this. Just sent it to my stores group chat.

When we were asked that same question everyone was saying how we are worried for our health and safety. All our DM said was that its still happening anyways no matter how we feel and we need to suck it up and learn to be better batistas because our sales are so low. He basically just attacked everyone the whole time. Everyone is livid rn
pleasesurpriseme 17 points 3y ago
W o w
I know everyone jumps to “call PCC” but honestly I would
rachioann 4 points 3y ago
PCC is useless
pleasesurpriseme 4 points 3y ago
I mean yeah, just like filing incident reports can feel useless too. But starting a paper trail of the bullshit they’re doing can accumulate into something.
rachioann 1 points 3y ago
I suppose, but that's about all they're good for. I've dealt with PCC before and in my experience they didn't do shit.
quanday123 14 points 3y ago
That's just an example of a bad dm, I'm sorry you guys are stuck with someone so blunt and unforgiving. I have had a few of those in my time at sbux.
spaceman_cat 8 points 3y ago
He was all nice till we had something bad to say about this situation
jams1015 3 points 3y ago
That's not blunt, that's abusive.
LilKaySigs 59 points 3y ago
Honestly I’d rather they just keep it real with us and say “We’re losing hella money and this is gonna happen no matter what so there’s no point in complaining about it” than sugarcoat it with “We care about our partners and customers” because we all know their true intentions, there’s really no point in hiding it
rachelcp99 42 points 3y ago
I am a shift at the highest grossing store in my district and am in the only district in my region making substantial profits. We are opening our lobby, returning to full operating hours, and dealing with the summer launch all in the same week. Our baristas and shifts are already burnt out from our intense influx of business and the Pod schedules. When I brought up concerns to my SM I was told that “starbucks lost a lot of money taking care of us so now we need to help them out by bringing up sales.” While I agree they have done a ton to look out for us, risking our safety while we are still smack dab in the middle of a pandemic (my county/state hasn’t even reached peak) is unacceptable. There has been a mass influx in rude customers and my partners being constantly degraded. The amount of incident reports filed in the past month is insane. Our DM is a very happy-go-lucky man who acts as if nothing is even wrong. I don’t foresee this change to opening the Cafe or returning to normal hours lasting very long or at least I hope it won’t. I would hate to lose any of my partners due to these corporate decisions.
jennyann89 28 points 3y ago
It pisses me off most because I feel like we came back under false pretenses. Idk about everyone else but in my training opening the lobby wasn’t mentioned
thebetawolf21 26 points 3y ago
Man I am SO PISSED about this stupid 6/1 reopening for us, and all cat pay ending 5/31. It's dumb as HELL!!! I have been home on cat pay since it was first offered (kept on it by saying I'm willing to work if asked, but there's been no openings in stores near me so luckily I haven't had to come in yet) and am so mad that not only are these corp dumbasses opening (I'm in Chicago) and reopening the LOBBY, they're also cutting off cat pay to make up for lost hours, and at the same time they're telling me no cat pay, they're telling me I will not have many hours likely. This sucks. I was working 30-36 hours quite often. So now you're telling me that on top of reopening when we really shouldn't yet, you're taking away cat pay to make up for my lost hours?!

We are NOT ESSENTIAL! Starbucks is in no way an essential business. We are also not a small independent coffee shop that would likely have to close for good if we continue to be mostly closed. Starbucks does not care about barista/lower level store partners nearly as much as they care about their bottom-line and shareholders. It's really infuriating. I lowkey would rather be laid off so I can collect unemployment. Like I don't mind this job and like most of my coworkers, but this low of pay and risk of exposure is just not worth it anymore.
UnashamedLesbian 1 points 3y ago
I work in Chicago too. They're cutting our pay, slashing our labor, extending our store hours, and opening up the lobby. I am immunocompromised, incredibly pissed off, and about five minutes away from quitting.
CriticalSheep 23 points 3y ago
I hate everything about what corporate is doing to us. Mobile order pickup in DT stores is ridiculous- the lines aren't that long now that all the stores are open again. And the fact that we're losing our hazard pay is absolutely asinine. So long as we are in a pandemic we need to have hazard pay. it's as simple as that.

My District Manger sat in during our meeting. She said "we are providing a safe place for our customers to go to" and then said "we are helping and giving them a break mentally, think of their mental states. Think of the suicides. More people would commit them if they didn't have this escape."

What about my mental state as a worker? Now I'm in charge of keeping my customers from committing suicide? I deserve more than 3 extra dollars then.
Kaywin 6 points 3y ago
TIL we are glorified minimum-wage therapists. Hmph.
suenologia 21 points 3y ago
this whole thing is disgusting and proves that starbucks will do anything to give to its entitled customers for a profit. sales are obviously down because people aren’t out and about how tf can they be dense about that?? all businesses are suffering atm, starbucks shouldn’t be encouraging people to leave their homes to sit in a cafe. i agree with you, when customers ask me if i like how things are im not going to smile and say im relieved like a good little robot. the pandemic didn’t just end because people were bored at home and the economy is crashing.
eat-reddit-tv 24 points 3y ago
> the pandemic didn’t just end because people were bored at home and the economy is crashing

THANK YOU I feel like no one else sees this

There’s a petition going around to keep cafe’s closed! Sign and share!

coworker.org/p/keepcafesclosed
xxtere5sxx 8 points 3y ago
I’ll post this to my team and tell other baristas to sign ! Today my SM is having a meeting with us. I heard from a coworker that when they took the LOA they got paid unemployment and CAT pay ! I am tempted to take LOA but idk if it’s still possible ? It’s been so crazy recently and my manager hasn’t been at the store and we are down 5 people.
sinisterbird420 16 points 3y ago
I just read an article that shows we get it when we spend a lot of time in the same room with someone who has the virus, even if they are more than 6 feet away.

Do. Not. Open. The. Lobby. For. Indoor. Seating.

They can sit outside or in their own homes. This isn't right.
thebetawolf21 12 points 3y ago
Yeah this is way too early in this situation to open lobby. I don't understand why we can't continue to operate fully grab and go until this is actually over.
sinisterbird420 3 points 3y ago
thank you! this is exactly how i feel.
coffeeslinger2000 1 points 3y ago
When people are talking about opening lobbies are we talking about grab and go or fully opening washrooms and seating? I think people are referring to grab and go in a lot of posts, but that’s not what “opening the lobby” infers, at least to me. The only communication that has come down so far (in my district at least) is grab and go, nothing about letting people into washrooms or setting up seating. It could be true for other areas, but I think there are some inconsistencies still in wording across these subs.
millennialcandy [OP] 0 points 3y ago
In my particular store they were talking about opening up the lobby today, the same day as the summer launch, for indoor seating. Funny enough our DM changed her tune the day after the meeting and stated that we won't open our lobby until Starbucks as a whole is.

Ya think she reads the reddit page? lol
TheOnesLeftBehind 15 points 3y ago
Is this just something that came out today? My store literally just opened back up to grab and go with customers coming to the pos on Yesterday. We’re cafe only if that effects anything?
tiffers99 11 points 3y ago
My store is also cafe only and I haven’t heard of my store being open to the public again yet BUT I do know a few DT stores are opening the cafe again starting this week and it honestly pisses me off.
LaurenOhhh 6 points 3y ago
I work in a cafe and my manager told me the only reason why we aren’t opening the lobby is because we’re only allowed to operate at 5% capacity and since our store is so small that means at most we’re allowed to have 5 customers in the store at once... they’re going to slowly start increasing the percentage so I imagine we’ll start allowing lobby seating within a month or so
jayessdubs 2 points 3y ago
I imagine this will be the same at our store , just texted the SM about it. We can only have 5 customers in currently, but I worry about what will happen when that number rises.
tiffers99 2 points 3y ago
Ahhhh okay. I know mine is in a busy downtown area and since we’re like 4 doors down from an Apple store we’ll have a HUGE influx of people again when they reopen
sara_mendez8 14 points 3y ago
isn't this a BILLION dollar company?! this is so unnecessary, drive throughs are still open, if customers are so desperate to get their coffee, they can wait in line or make it at home. I'm sorry OP
drinkliquidclocks 13 points 3y ago
A huge corporation puts profit over people? *Pretends to be shocked*
kaitlyn_vargas 13 points 3y ago
I’m mad about it because people already don’t wear masks when entering or coming through the drive thru I don’t Like going to work because of it.
NO-IM-DIRTY-DAN 10 points 3y ago
Don’t get it twisted, this isn’t actually about “normalcy”, it’s about profit and for stores like mine that are mostly DT, all it’ll do is expose us and our customers more.
sassy7girl 10 points 3y ago
I don’t think cafes are open to seating yet- grab n go will be the next model- order at POS (portable plexi shield placed in front of it) then GO!

Are you saying your store is opening up the seating and bathrooms? ‘ Grab n go’also indicates seating isn’t used— ( see the PDF models on the hub) bathrooms are locked for partners only, key kept in BOH.
Kaywin 4 points 3y ago
The current plan for my DT is we are opening the lobby with a max capacity of 14 people on June 1.

I'm deeply unhappy about it but powerless to do anything. What can ya do :\\
sassy7girl 1 points 3y ago
14 capacity sounds like not enough space around them to keep 6 feet social distance.

The hub diagram for grab n go (pdf) said ‘waiting zone space’ should have less or equal to amt of customers in Q. They showed like 3 in the Q & 2 in the waiting zone. Which seemed adequately spaced-14 doesn’t seem like it would work.
Kaywin 2 points 3y ago
We have a fairly large store, and the 14 count is to include folks waiting in the queue to order.
sassy7girl 1 points 3y ago
Gotcha! Thx!
millennialcandy [OP] 0 points 3y ago
We open up our lobby for seating this coming Thursday, not tuesday like I previously thought. small victories? lol
elysemosunset 9 points 3y ago
100% agree the lobbies should not open it's absurd
hopelovepeace33 9 points 3y ago
Yea I’m not happy at all about the cafes re-opening & allowing people to come in and do grab & go. Wearing a mask as much as it prevents whatever we have from getting out it doesn’t prevent us from breathing in things. Also customers coming in aren’t going to be wearing mask & those flimsy plastics shields aren’t going to prevent much of anything because some idiot will some how F$&@ them up. The freakin mobile order section also they are just going to allow people to come in and touch every single cup until they find their own! I told family & friends to not mobile order anything, just go through the drive thru & pick it up because I do t want someone I know mobile ordering & coming by getting a cup that has been touched by at least 5-6 other people before them searching for their mobile order. I don’t like that they are doing it & I believe that it’s unsafe for us & the customers & we should just keep doing what we are doing right now with handing out mobile orders and everything. Honestly though the company is going to do what they want to do but in my opinion we should keep things the way it is for now & until further notice because it’s still a very unsafe situation.
Hereloff 8 points 3y ago
Right! We're going to have to go through so much bullshit for this. Two separate lines. Tape everywhere that customers will ignore. So we'll basically get shat on by customers. I'm just. No. Why not stay drive thru only until restaurants/cafes are all open as normal?
I asked my dm this and she basically ignored me. From what I got from the answer, is we'll make more money if we open up. 🙁
agentdouble1s 8 points 3y ago
Is this the entire company or certain states?
spaceman_cat 8 points 3y ago
When we were asked that same question everyone was saying how we are worried for our health and safety. All our DM said was that its still happening anyways no matter how we feel and we need to suck it up and learn to be better batistas because our sales are so low. He basically just attacked everyone the whole time. Everyone is livid rn
quanday123 7 points 3y ago
Luckily, our district hasn't concerned ourselves with opening our lobbies soon, but I still offer all of my fellow partners that are gearing up to open. I haven't seen any of these alleged goofy trainings yet either. All I can say is voice your objections to your SM and if they are okay with it they may allow you to practice however much caution you may feel is necessary to stay safe. I've seen partners who, when confronted with cash, will return the change and make the customer wait so they may wash their hands. Stuff like this will encourage our customers to practice healthy habits as well since they'll see us at the forefront of the operation being as clean as possible. Good luck to yall and I hope everything goes well :)
mooseman923 5 points 3y ago
My Starbucks is actively trying to make people with asthma not work because we are "too risky". Myself and 2 other coworkers have issues that we can't wear the masks because of asthma. So our dm is trying to make us take personal leave which would make us ineligible for unemployment benefits
RegularFrappuccino 5 points 3y ago
Opening the lobby won’t increase sales either
himynametopher 5 points 3y ago
We NEED to unionize
crzyshiba 5 points 3y ago
We had a meeting and our entire store agreed that grab n go we did not feel safe and she said well if you don’t want grab n go then we have no hours . And states that she is bored of being at home uhh
NyanBecca 5 points 3y ago
Ok also a lot of companies look to Starbucks when setting the bar. If we start opening up our lobbies, other places will do the same. It’s a scary thought especially with no vaccine and no real treatment yet. I’m so scared of a second wave and this isn’t helping.
hanbanan18 5 points 3y ago
I'm no longer at the bux, but you all need to strike like yesterday. These people are blatantly risking YOUR lives for THEIR profit. It is unacceptable
seeliecourting 5 points 3y ago
It's all so ridiculous but the worst part for my store is that sales aren't even down by that much! We stay busy from the moment we open until close without enough people on the floor to even keep things stocked or work on closing tasks and yet we're jumping straight from drive thru only to opening the lobby. So pissed
captainofkitten 5 points 3y ago
My lobby is still closed
hopelovepeace33 3 points 3y ago
Mine is still closed right now as well, but during that meeting with all the meditation stuff they said that they would be opening them back up for grab & go within the next week or so. I believe that’s what this person is referencing when she’s talking about the lobby’s being back open, because technically it is but you just can’t stay there.
millennialcandy [OP] 2 points 3y ago
I wish. We had grab & go for a few days, and during our meeting our DM and SM were talking about how to set up seating for customers to stay inside sometime this week. our DM has changed her mind on this though and is going to open us back up for seating whenever Starbucks as a whole does.
hopelovepeace33 1 points 3y ago
My store hasn’t “opened” back up for grab & go yet & we haven’t been told when we will be, but it’s going to be highly annoying because people don’t wear mask nor are they going to abide by social distancing, because they don’t even now. We’ve been doing mobile orders & delivery inside pick up they just wait at the door and we hand it off to them & that makes me uncomfortable because again most aren’t wearing mask and when they talk whatever they have is getting out into the air inside the cafe and can last up to 30+ min in the air so if there are 10 people how many of them possibly have something & that makes me extremely nervous. Also the whole mobile order situation, my SM was like they can come & get their orders when we open back up for grab & go & all of us were like “so we’re just going to allow people to touch others cups” and he basically said yes & the next day I told everybody and anybody that I personally knew to not mobile order to just wait in the line because I don’t want my family or friends having their cups touched by others. Lastly your DM & SM were absolutely ignorant to even consider having seating inside the cafe! I don’t care how big cafes are no one needs to come to just sit around for hours on end with no mask (because we can’t make them) spreading around whatever they possibly have & also that’s just extremely inconsiderate for all the partners safety at your store.
Momisnotmyname 3 points 3y ago
I am the opening SSV and didn't even get a memo! I got to work today and all the signs and lobby were set up for "Grab'n'Go". Glad I am so essential.
Hound-Dog-1917 3 points 3y ago
At this point I have no feelings left. 😑
BandagedBacon 2 points 3y ago
Feeling as you do, I'm curious as to why you don't quit.
LibleftFemboy 2 points 3y ago
Make your opinion heard, organize with your coworkers, dont act alone but don't sit silently
flexi_lexii 2 points 3y ago
I wish our sales were low right now... our store is open 5 fewer hours per day. We’ve been averaging more in sales per day than we we’re pre-pandemic. Half the people don’t wear masks or pull them down to tell us their name. It’s terrifying.

Luckily our lobby won’t be opening for at least 6 weeks based on our states reopening plan but I’m still not looking forward to it
Edit: typo
Kaywin 2 points 3y ago
Had a customer on DTO ask us this for the first time today.

Our sweet DTO barista at that time was giving the sanitized "Yeah! It'll be nice to see people again" meanwhile my coworkers and I were in the background laughing and going NO, NO WE ARE NOT HAPPY ABOUT REOPENING THE LOBBY. STAY HOME.
chchsiew 1 points 3y ago
We (customers also)need protection when the cafe reopened ! If customers don’t required face mask, Starbucks is literally putting everyone at risks !
