Shifts that’s transferred to a new store, what advice do you have?
So I love my store and my partners so much. We have been handling coming back very well and everyone is just happy to get back to work.
There is a store right down the street from us that has been struggling for years from mismanagement. The old manager just left before cat pay started (mid-March) and the new manager (our old ASM, actually) is amazing. His energy is very chill and confident. He is absolutely going to improve the store and it’s only going to go up from here. (Assuming the old SM doesn’t come back.
That all being said, they need a shift to transfer to the store. In some ways it’s a golden opportunity because the store is only going to improve from here under his leadership, and it would look amazing on a resume if I decided to move on to ASM/SM. I’ve been a shift for just over a year and my manager feels that I’m experienced enough to handle what the store needs. Also, this store is quieter than my store, so when we did get the store back to full volume, it would still be calmer than mine, but it would also reduce the strain on my store to have another functioning store nearby.
However, I’m anxious to take on a new environment during this time. I don’t know all the partners, though I trust the SM. I do know some of the partners and like working with them. I would miss my partners so much and not having them as a sense of stability right now would be hard. I know I would have to muster a lot of strength to improve a store. With everything that’s going on I don’t know if that would cause me massive amounts of anxiety. I struggle to let go of that comforting space that my store holds right now. Though I know that’s reasonable to feel right now. My store is so shift heavy that there would not be an opportunity to transfer back. My SM mentioned that she is struggling to give everyone hours.
So idk. There is benefit on both sides and I’m really torn. What has your experience been transferring from a store you love to one that needs improving? Would you transfer right now or wait until the world is in a better place/for the next opportunity?
Thanks in advance.

It’s all the same I have done it 4 times. It sucks for awhile but I have fallen in love over and over again. It’s a revolving door. Constantly changing. Your old store will not be the same in 6 months and neither will the new one. Give it a chance! Sounds like they could need your passion! :) good luck!

I think transferring to a new store as a shift is a great way to grow in your leadership role. Every store has its own quirks for sure but if you know your roles and routines and are confident as a supervisor you’ll be just fine! I’ve worked as a shift at 3 stores and it’s really easy to adapt as long as you communicate a lot with your manager and fellow shifts.

Go for it! Step out of your comfort zone, you can only grow from the experience. My store closed because of COVID and I got scheduled at 5 different stores, every time I went to a new one I learned more and met awesome partners, it will become a new comfort zone

How did you feel health wise? Did you feel safe being in so many different environments?

It was definitely a concern for me, but I chose to keep working so I wouldn’t go stir crazy and have taken the policies we have very seriously. On the other hand, I’m in a part of the world largely unaffected by the virus in comparison to the hotspots so everything is more lenient here. I have stuck to two stores for the last month to minimize my contact with different groups of staff but going and working in different stores made me a stronger barista especially since I was working in high volume stores instead of my usual very slow store

I might be over simplifying things; but I believe that if your relationship with your SM has a solid foundation of trust like you say it does than everything else will eventually fall into place. There will still be struggle and hard days, but knowing that your leader has your back makes the uncertainty and fear so much more manageable. If you are looking to potentially move up and become an ASM, this is a great opportunity to show your chops. I would go for it.
