Any good conversation starters when customers are waiting for drinks? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
I recently noticed that my manager has been putting me to the front (Hand-off) a little more than before. Cause of this, I'm starting to see that I don't REALLY engage in conversations with customers waiting for their drinks.

Today, we recently had a problem getting mobile orders and so a lot of customers had to wait a little longer for their order(s). So when they come I tell them **"Your drink is getting made, just give it another minute. I'm sorry for the delay."** or **"Were having minor technical problems with our machines thus your order might take another 2 minutes to finish. I'm sorry for the delay."** and thus they move back and were awkwardly looking at each other from time to time till their order is done.

I will admit I'm shy and tend to overthink (Self-stress myself out) thus I don't really try to engage in conversation but I want to "loosen up" and avoid the awkward experience silent staring wait period between me and the outside. Thus I need **help / tips / advice** on how to engage in a conversation with a customer.

Also (If not to much to ask) what are the buttons (#3 & #4) on the blender used for on the cold bar? (I get confused and tend to forget.)

I tend to stick with “how’s your day going” and “any plans for the rest of the day” as a generic conversation starter and ya know ask follow up questions if time permits. Also the 3 is for wet cold foam, 4 is for dry cold foam (any sweet cream foam is usually 4)

i try to find things to compliment, ask how their day is going, if they have any plans, etc. my go to is always finding something to compliment, genuinely, because it makes them smile and it always feels good to get a compliment, and i’ve found that people open up a little easier when you start with something like that, and conversation starts to roll naturally

My solution, dole out compliments like it’s Halloween candy. I get awkward when I don’t know what to say, or a drink is taking forever. Whenever this happens I will compliment literally anything. Tattoos work well because their is usually a story behind it the customer is happy to tell. Kids are good for the same reason, people will talk your ear off about their kids. Sometimes I will use the same compliment for 3 or 4 customers in a row. Who gives a shit if it’s genuine or not? We’re being paid to act fake and lick boots. Dishing out compliments also helps with assholes, if you already complimented them they tend not to get quite as nasty, no matter how mean or difficult they usually are. Every one thinks I’m super nice, in reality I just don’t give enough of a shit to be genuine with our customers so I fall back on handing out compliments to literally everyone.

Connecting is hard.
But #3 makes wet foam, or any topper foam(like salted honey) and #4 makes dry foam, or any base foam (caramel cloud)

Here are a few:

1. What are your thoughts on Crooked Hillary and the fake news media?
2. What are your thoughts on the immigration policies enacted by Obama?
3. Please explain why WHO is corrupt.
