Hiya, I'm a closing barista and I've been with the company since 2015. I've always been a closer, sans a few stints where I worked at a kiosk location inside of Safeway. I know that no matter what there will be the "AM vs. PM/ Openers vs. Closers" B.S., but in the last 7 months, give or take a month, it's gotten so much worse at my store. The manager has always seemed to favor the morning crew, even openly shit-talking some of the night crew to me, and giving one of the PM shift leads several write-ups for things that either happened before they got on shift for the day or for a ridiculous reason that wasn't even an offense (these were later reviewed by the DM and dismissed). During the last five or six months, more and more tasks have been put on the night crew and closers, including almost all of the daily tasks that should be completed by noon. Clean plays are just a disaster and a half because every week we're told to do more and more shit that's not in the book that wouldn't be a problem if tasks were getting done throughout the day properly. There's now a new to-do list taped in the daily logbook and the only thing AM has to do is check fridge temps. Every day I clock on I find five or more things on bar that are expired and no backups have been made. I know that it's not busy in the AM because I've seen the daily profits and have heard my AM coworkers talking about how slow it's been all day. I guess I don't know what to do and I've never been at my wit's end about work like this before, especially since all of the PM crew has talked to the manager and DM and nothing seems to change no matter how many promises and positive words are said by them.

I honestly believe morning crew will more often than not be favored because most people associate morning with coffee; with that association also comes the assumption that the morning crew ***must*** be busier despite the actual facts and thus needs special accommodations. That's at least my perspective from being a closer for almost a year now. Also, addressing what you said about the minimum work load for AM compared to PM my location has the exact same issue, our morning shift has the basic openings duties and that's it. Mids have no duties leaving the normal solo closer (me) with a list of 25ish things to do.

The shift disparity is just the worst! I have seen in at every store I have worked at. The only fix is to get the entire management team to be able to communicate respectfully and regularly.

I used to be a closer as a barista and now am the open SSV. I do everything and anything to get the rest of the day set up.

I've both opened and closed and found things that have expired days prior so I can honestly say, no matter the circumstances neither AM nor PM SSVs get their tasks done.
