Ask your SM because each state has different labor laws regarding breaks
aspiringandroid 23 points 3y ago
oh, honey. please say something. your ssv team is failing you. nobody should have to skip breaks.
stonerscout455 2 points 3y ago
thank u so much for validating this i’ve been crying all afternoon

jeez, i’m sorry. this is really unfair, especially for you to be pushed to be this upset. you shouldn’t have to cry over this, you shouldn’t be pushed there. i left my last job at in n out for a bunch of reasons, but one of them was that they would consistently forget to give me breaks but give other ppl theirs when they’d clocked in after me. it makes you feel forgotten and not cared about. i’m really sorry, and i promise that you aren’t some pawn for them. you are completely justified feeling how you do. maybe see if you can talk to your sm about it, cause labor laws kinda differ depending on state and country and whatnot. but regardless of laws, it others are getting breaks, you should too. also, honestly, if you aren’t on a planted position, run to the back to drink water for a few minutes so you can just have some time to breathe. you deserve that much at the *very* least. stay positive!! i’m sorry you’re in a crappy spot, i hope things get better!

thank you so much for making me feel seen, i very much appreciate this comment. i reached out asking about labor laws before i said anything that would be rude if i was mistaken about the situation. again, thank you for this comment, it really made my day :)
th1snightissparkling 3 points 3y ago
ofc!! i just know how upsetting it can be when you’re exhausted and then other ppl get breaks and you don’t. i’m glad you reached out!!

I recently told my sm that I won't work more than 5 hours because I'm never getting a break. She was so shocked and say that I had been mistreated. She has since made sure to check in on break status among the SSV running plays. It has helped. Also, when I feel forgotten, I simply say I need to use the restroom and it usually snaps them to attention of remembering who still needs a break, etc...
stonerscout455 3 points 3y ago
i’m really hoping my SM won’t take it as a slight :/ he’s a good guy but i don’t want to offend. i’m so glad things are getting better for you—thank you for giving me the strength to stand up for myself!
cfuqua 3 points 3y ago
Um. Just say something. Are you afraid of conflict?? Breaks are mandatory.

One time they accidentally marked me as having had a break, it was about 4 or 5 hours in, I just asked what time i would get one, and the supervisor apologized and sent me on my break right then.
stonerscout455 3 points 3y ago
in short—yes, i’m terrified of conflict. i’ve been busting my butt trying to get promoted so i don’t want to cause any sort of ruckus, but now that i feel like i’m justified i’m moving forward.
cfuqua 1 points 3y ago
How are you going to handle conflicts after you get promoted? Both new employees and customers can cause conflicts. If you can't handle talking to a supervisor, how do you think that is going to reflect on your promotion review?
stonerscout455 3 points 3y ago
it’s more of the fact that i don’t get the CHANCE to. i’m always on planted positions (ie: i’ve been on window for quite a while bc other partners aren’t comfortable doing it, i’m the only one) and when no ones willing to cover my position, what do you do about that? i also know the stress my SSVs are under. this is an issue that has been going on since i started at this store—some shifts give all breaks, some don’t. i was trying to prove that i was willing to go the extra mile, not necessarily hide from what was happening. and the conflict between not wanting to get on my boss’ bad side because i legitimately don’t know the labor laws is different from conflicts i’ve actually had to take care of—i’ve dealt with customers shouting profanity at me and others while shifts were on break. i guess i presented myself wrong, and for that i apologize, but TLDR; just wanted to prove myself, not want to step on toes, and now i’m feeling like a doormat. so i’m standing up for myself. thanks for your less than nice comments :)

I don't know what your managers value most (apparently mine think being early is being on time and being on time may as well be late), but I believe you have to at least be able to ask for a break that may have been forgotten. Communication is a big part of being on a team, especially amongst management.

It's generous that you're trying to lighten their load, but there's no reason your break should be skipped, they know that very well. Take care of yourself and don't burn yourself out for Starbucks pay.

Usually the breaks are on a designated time as to help the shifts organize the baristas but you should definitely talk to your SM about when you should be taking your breaks because being pushed like that is horrible and hopefully you can work something out
Also you shouldn’t be taking a 30 min after two hours it should be a 10 then a 30 after 4 hours if you’re working more than 6 hours
okeekee 2 points 3y ago
You’re entitled to those breaks! Starbucks policy requires a 10 for every 4 hours worked, a 30 if longer than 6 hours, and a second 10 if you’re working 8 hours.
From my experience dealing with an SSV that was new and still very insecure in their authority and tried to have me written up for asking when I’d be sent on my 30 after working without a break for 6 hours, approach it super chill. If you see they’re sending everyone else and skip you, ask. If they’re consistently sending you 2 hours into a hour shift, let them know it’s affecting your ability to keep giving your best effort for so long without a chance to breathe. They may have some plan in their head and aren’t really doing the math right in their head for sending people on breaks.

If it’s still a problem, esp if it’s 1 SSV a majority or all of the time, bring it up with your SM and it can be a teaching moment for that SSV.

If this is something that’s happening at all you absolutely need to talk to your SM. I’m currently in ASM training and recently went over the company wide policies on breaks and they’re mandatory. It’s not something your SSVs can opt out of.

If you’re not comfortable talking to your shifts directly, approach the SM. They can get in serious trouble for skipping breaks- intentionally or not for breaking labor laws. If your SM doesn’t correct it, your DM certainly will.

I understand not wanting to cause issues but not bringing it up won’t change it and only create bigger ones down the road. Not being comfortable handling small “confrontations” isn’t ideal for a future SSV either.

If you’re nervous, approach it by assuming positive intent and like your ssvs maybe need more support planning breaks, because missing them is affecting the partners.

Maybe I got super lucky with the stores I’ve worked in, but god I hope voicing your concern wouldn’t be met with confrontation.

This happened all the time in my store and what ended up being the issue was that the shift leader would tell someone to go send so and so on their break and instead of relieving that person as directed, the breaker would go wherever they felt like going... the bar, usually, or wherever their friend(s) was/were planted. So unless you were on bar or near their friend(s), the breaks were really really hit or miss. This almost exclusively happened in the afternoons/evenings or on weekends, when the high schoolers were scheduled together.

Also, keep track if this happens during certain shifts or only when certain shifts are running the floor. Maybe the shift needs to be coached. Maybe they need more help than what is scheduled at those times and making a paper trail will help get more coverage?

lol, right.

If you're this worked up about not getting a 10, you should truly ponder finding a less stressful/busy store, or an easier job. No Starbucks should be this hard on a partner. :(

\-Feel better.

you really don’t know anything about what’s been going on, but thanks for your “concern”
