Partner Beverages question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Inimitable--original
Hi fellow baristas! So I had a question about the three free drinks we receive a shift. When I first started working in January it was normal that you could have three free drinks a day and you could keep them in the back while you were working. Now this last week my either manager or dm decided we are no longer allowed to keep drinks. We can drink as much of it before we clock in or before our break is over and then we have to dump it. I was wondering if anyone elses policies recently shifted and what policies you guys have. Many thanks!

You aren’t allowed to make a coffee and keep it out back?

Are people hanging out back excessively? The only reason I could see for this. Otherwise that is ridiculous and only 3 drinks a shift has not been a rule in stone ever...

Basically we just left them in the back so if we had a second we could take a drink during our shift. But now we aren't allowed to have any Starbucks drinks or even water anywhere in the store. If we get thirsty we're supposed to take a few sips of water and trash the cup. It just seems like they thought we were being wasteful or having too many drinks? I honestly don't know their reasoning behind it and they haven't told me so that's why I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this at all😅

What the fresh hell. My old store and the store my spouse is currently a shift in (sorry it’s the same store if that was confusing) literally has a Tupperware bin for partner drinks our back, water or whatever...y’all need to stay hydrated, masks are so dehydrating it feels like.

That’s so shitty and weird. I figured it was due to too much time spent out back which is definitely a thing but not even water?
Inimitable--original [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Exactly! Especially with the masks we need hydrated more. And we honestly weren't hanging out in the back at all- we have no time to! It's basically a mad dash so you don't pass out from dehydration then back to the floor. So I really don't get it.

It sounds like a power tripping DM. What I’ve learned is that DM’s are the most useless cog in the wheel of the company and often feel pressured to constantly tweak the store to make it more efficient so come up with bullshit like this constantly.
dodofishman 2 points 3y ago
Yeah wtf y'all should say something. I get that at some stores it gets cluttered or there's an issue w/ people taking tons of stuff home but if that's not the case that's really unreasonable.
gaayrat 3 points 3y ago
Personally I haven’t been keeping drinks in the back because it seems a little unsanitary to have all these drinks crammed together and considering what’s going on I just want to cut down as much risk as possible. Maybe that’s the case? Even so they should’ve explained better
Inimitable--original [OP] 3 points 3y ago
That's the only thing that would make sense to me too, and I would totally understand if that was the reason and it was explained to me. There was really no explanation just a bunch of us getting in trouble for doing what we've always done.
particularBillarina 2 points 3y ago
That would make sense to me I hadn’t thought about that, but y’all still need to hydrate...maybe separate spots for everyone’s drinks

The only (brief) time my SM enforced something like this in our store was when baristas were leaving multiple drinks for themselves a shift, leaving our VERY small backroom so loaded with drinks it was impossible to do anything at the BOH desk. Sometimes closing crew would forget some and they'd be left overnight, sometimes one of our less careful partners would leave them in weird places (on shelves, on the BOH sink... Everywhere) and I think my SM snapped. Once everyone demonstrated they could get it together he let us go back to normal, though.

And yeah, that 3 drinks a shift rule is bullshit.

3 drinks per shift? Is that what your management told you?!

One time I came in early and had a preshift drink, then had 2 con pannas on the floor, had a drink on my 30 PLUS both of my 10's, then got a drink when I left. It was a Sunday. I try not to work Sundays anymore. It's better for our store's bottom line.

Usually I have one before my shift and one at the end, when I leave. But if I wanted more in between, I wouldn't hesitate! This was the biggest reason I wanted to work at SB, lol. Free Doubleshots.

Besides, our SM marks out between 3-5 drinks per shift, every shift, easily. She is the most rule-abiding person I have ever met in my life, like I am pretty sure she's the one that handed the 10 Commandments to Moses or whomever. There's no way that's an official SB company rule.

ETA: If it is an official rule, color me stunned. It would feel like Santa being unmasked all over again.

Wow! No they've always been really strict with us about just 3 drinks. And now they're being stricter about those drinks.
SchemingPancake 2 points 3y ago
I've recently been told the rule is technically five drinks per shift. But I regularly mark out more than three. I'd also be stunned if three drinks was a real policy...
jams1015 2 points 3y ago
I realize I probably spoke too soon to flat out deny it might be company policy, I just seriously doubt it because my manager is sooooo good about following corporate to the letter. We even have to mark out our waters so labor and supplies are accounted for. I just can't imagine she'd let an opportunity to "rules flex" pass by.
LowInvestigator3 1 points 3y ago
In my training it said official policy is one drink 30 minutes before your shift, one during, and one up to 30 minutes after your shift, so 3 per day

This is bananas. The only reason I could think of for this is the pandemic. However, when all this corona craziness began, we were told we needed to stop bringing personal cups in, but we can still have our drinks in back. Keeping hydrated is def super important. Like someone else said, your DM seems to be power tripping or something. What a waste to have to throw out so much plastic and product for no reason. So odd.
hellfiire 1 points 3y ago
Same thing at my store. As far as I know this is not permanent. It’s because of the virus and it is too easily spread with drinks sitting out in the open/ next to each other. We have a rack where we store all the drinks so obviously that’s not going to work during the pandemic. It should be temporary. When we can have personal cups back I’m sure we’ll be able to store drinks again.
