Possibly unethical question (LOA & unemployment/side job) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by offshoreninja
If I took the offered unpaid leave until September, would I qualify for unemployment? I know state laws vary (I’m in Illinois ftr), but I’d still like to hear unemployment rules for whatever state you’re in.

Also, would Starbucks find out if I did a side job like “personal shopper”? I’m far more comfortable working “by myself” than with a variety of partners and customers. I can’t guarantee they’re being as cautious as they should be, but at the grocery store I can keep my distance from others.

I’m lucky to be living rent free (in exchange for child care and house keeping), but I have other bills to pay. I worry if I take the LOA that I’ll fall behind on my other bills, but I’m not comfortable working in such close quarters and in such a fast-paced environment. Any advice?

You may qualify for disaster pay. I got it and I’m in TX

For cat pay? I already got that, i think it ended in early may or middle of may, ive been on leave since march 20th

No lol it’s different from cat pay. I applied for unemployment but I didn’t get it since LOA is voluntary. At least in Texas, if you’re not eligible for unemployment then you’re automatically considered for something called disaster pay.

Ah! I did get unemployment as well as the cat pay, but I will have to look into that! Thanks

It depends on the state. Some states would consider that a loss of hours and you'd qualify, others would classify it as you choosing not to work and you wouldn't qualify. There's no harm in applying.

In Indiana we wouldn’t get it because work is available to us. Illinois tends to be more liberal, so, maybe they have a provision that covers it?

Advice: If you are questioning the ethics of something, likely it's unethical.
