I don’t think you should force someone, but definitely reccomend and encourage it. In my state, almost no one wears masks or carries them around so forcing that would mean completely refusing a customer their product they paid for. It sucks and people should wear them.

I think that every store should require masks. Unfortunately Starbucks says we can't deny service if they don't wear one. In my city there is a mandate that everyone has to wear one, but SM says for our safety we can't force them. My store is the same as yours right now, MOP only, and I'm worried that when we open for Grab and Go next week customers are going to stop wearing masks. I tell every customer without one right now that they need to wear a mask next time, but I really want to deny them service.

that sucks. I feel like wearing masks is the least common courtesy customers can extend to us right now and we can’t even demand that from them. 😔

People in general (not just customers of Starbucks) don’t do well with demands. Demanding something from someone is usually a not a good idea if you want them to do something. Asking would work better.

At my store we “trained” our customers to wear masks and 99% of them wear one when they come to the store.

How do you ‘train’ them?

If stores in your area are not enforcing mask policy, that’s not really on Starbucks, but your management. Corporate can’t control what each store does. They can give all the tools each store needs and provide us with safety policies, but it’s up to your management to enforce it.

My district is very strict in all the policies that are now in effect. We are also asking (key work: asking) all customers to put masks on before they come to the window or the front doors to get their drinks. If they don’t have masks on, we tell them (in polite and respectful manner) that we can’t help them unless they cover their mouth and nose (even if it’s a t-shirt or a towel). When they are ordering we can see them thru our camera and let them know that they need a mask before they come to the window. If they don’t have a mask to put on, we ask them about the payment method and have them use the card reader or scan their phone with our window closed and the scanner and card reader being outside (we sanitize all of it once they leave). After they pay, we have them go around the building and come to the front door to get their order at the tables set up outside (CS will put it there).

All customers know this now and 99% of them wear masks, gloves, and sanitize their hands upon arrival to the window.
