Why the heck is every other business in my city requiring face masks inside and have the ability to turn people away without one but we aren’t because it “goes against our branding” and “the Starbucks experience” ??? Anyone else experiencing this at their store because I didn’t realize coffee and customers are more important than protecting from community spread 🤔😒
SkylerSayys41 points3y ago
Are masks legally required where you are? We have to turn people away because they're legally required here.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]35 points3y ago
The state mandate is that businesses must require people to wear a mask in their business so I’m like what the heck! Why aren’t we doing what everyone else is doing?!?!
SkylerSayys34 points3y ago
If thats the state mandate then you need to report it..... especially if you aren't going to enforce it.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]22 points3y ago
Do you know who we can report this too because this is hella ridiculous and this masks aren’t required things is what my DM is wanting to do. I just know me and a couple other partners are feeling uncomfy or unsafe because of this.
SkylerSayys9 points3y ago
I mean i think that HIGHLY depends on your local laws, and im not a legal person. Where i am, id report it to the local law enforcement because that's where we are supposed to report issues relating to the breakage of mask laws, and i feel like your stores rule falls under that. Im not the person to give advice about who to go to because i know nothing about your location or your local laws though. But it is definitely something that NEEDS to be reported, so id look into it
elsha00713 points3y ago
They are required where I am, but my SM says we can't refuse them service if they don't have one because they might assault us.
SkylerSayys15 points3y ago
That... is not okay, especially if its breaking a law thats in place for your safety. At my store us batistas are supposed to bring the shift over and let the shift deal with it, is it possible that your store is doing that and it was just communicated wrong...? I hope that's the case. If not, you NEED to bring it up to someone
colonade1720 points3y ago
Yes. My DM is very opposed to masks, even though it's the law in my state, and is constantly looking for ways to get us to ignore the law.
I think it's a shortsighted move. I can tell they're trying to make it seem like everything is normal and safe, but you get media attention because a customer or barista got sick and things aren't normal
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]13 points3y ago
It’s freaking crazy! I agree that they are being very short sighted with this and I understand wanting to be as normal as possible but come on Starbucks! We’re not going to lose anymore business asking people to wear masks than what the freaking pandemic did 💁♀️
seattle-random6 points3y ago
Go to website's Contact Us and use a throwaway email address. Write as if you're a customer. Complain that you went to LOCATION and you saw a barista not wearing a mask. Even though it's the law in your city or county or state or whatever. Don't use he or she pronouns so no one can get singled out. Your manager should start enforcing masks after that.

Then say you were walking to pick up your drink and saw other customers without mask. And none of the employees did anything about it.
Customers certainly are required to wear masks. By law. The problem is that the rules aren't being enforced. It's one thing to at least ask the customer to wear a mask. Which should be happening. Confrontation if they refuse is iffy. Realistically customers are only there for a short amount of time. So risk is low. But still.
colonade171 points3y ago
The problem in my store isn't the baristas, it's the customers. Many refuse to wear a mask, or just don't know how to wear one correctly.
seattle-random2 points3y ago
Yeah. Unfortunate that customers are the problem in most retail locations. My family works in grocery. And some customers are complete a-holes.
MobileforKaren11 points3y ago
Yep, it’s fucking ridiculous.
KingDuck77 points3y ago
I love your username
manolabars9 points3y ago
Brought up this exact point to my SM because I think it’s bullshit that we have to serve those who don’t care about the health of others around them all for an expensive, nonessential Frappuccino
andecen9 points3y ago
I’m in Sonoma County, CA and they’re required. I’ve worked at Cafes and DTs and if you don’t have a mask you don’t get service. It’s the rules and people should know better by now... it’s been going on for so long and the signs are plastered around the store. Yesterday someone even put their personal cup on the hand off plane to get it filled, like cmon guys.
lexisscared6 points3y ago
do you not even serve people in their cars in the DT without masks? in my county it’s law to wear masks when conducting any sort of business even through drive windows and walk up doors, but i don’t even know how to enforce it in the drive thru (if my sm would even be open to it) 80% of customers in the drive today were not wearing masks and it’s so scary.
my_name_is_in_use123 [OP]5 points3y ago
People really annoy me 😒😂
whatismineisyours6 points3y ago
Yeah, I was told because of how short our interaction is at the DT window that it doesn't really matter if they wear a mask. But then I get told that I have to converse with them to maintain our connection scores...
elysemosunset5 points3y ago
Yeah we're doing it here in Michigan you guys should be doing it as far as Starbucks related
3aTroop4 points3y ago
Money :(
lobotomydreams3 points3y ago
if a customer doesn't want to wear a mask we have to take their order outside,,,,,, like how does that make anything better
Keeponrocking6132 points3y ago
Legally in my state (NY) we have to turn people away but similar problem as my manager doesn't want to. So we are supposed to offer them a mask if they don't have them but I can just see people taking advantage of this given masks aren't the easiest thing to come by (not hard either)
neutralmilkho32 points3y ago
We had a man full on coughing on the store, hacking the whole time with no mask and no one said anything to him. I'm happy to wear a mask, I want our customers to wear them as well though. It really shows they only care about the illusion of safety rather than actual safety of employees and customers
andecen2 points3y ago
Yeah. If someone comes up to the mic with no mask we ask if they have one and if they say no we say sorry we can’t serve you and that’s that.
heatherhalo2 points3y ago
My SM said it's because the company doesn't want us to be assaulted over it. He brought up all the news stories talking about how people been asked to wear masks and then the employee was killed. However I am in Texas and apparently Texas just decided covid was over
